This book needed a lot of work, there where many random plot points, a lot of things where not ever explained and a lot of stuff should have been more explored. I did not hate the ending, but it was kind of random. I think the author took that old advice to just write anything to keep the story flowing a bit too far. Review continued in comments, spoilers! Overall, 2/5 stars, read if you want to finish the series, but be prepared for randomness.

iread2much Ok, so I have to say VAMPIRE children? seriously? And it just use them as a freaking distraction? There was NO point in having that so called “army”, it literally did nothing for the plot and I have no idea why it got by the editor. 2mo
iread2much Also, I‘m a Trekkie, I love time stuff, and I loved the use of time in a lot of the book, but the author does NOT ever explain why THAT particular woman was able to make such a HUGE change in the time line. What was so special about Katie that she made such a huge difference? That is NOT well explained 2mo

Caroline2 Oh no 🤦‍♀️ that‘s disappointing! 😒 I have the first book sitting on my tbr shelf but that‘s putting me off reading it if the final book is rubbish! 😑 2mo

Everyone seems to have hated this book so I figured I should just get this done and then move on to the rest of my awesome TBR.

Scochrane26 I liked it, but I think people didn‘t like the ending. But, I knew it wasn‘t the traditional fantasy book when the 2nd did all the lily story, so people shouldn‘t expect a traditional happy ending. I‘m still undecided about the ending—it definitely isn‘t as bad as Allegiant, IMO. (edited) 2mo

I finished this book this morning I would give this trilogy three stars it‘s not the best, but it‘s pretty enjoyable.Yet again Kelsea is just so brave like literally. This is the most original story I have ever read EVER! It‘s just so new and original. The ending literally was so horrible like seriously! I can‘t believe that happened to Kelsea is literally stuck in this normal world and her guard doesn‘t even know her NOT EVEN PEN!Totally recommend!

This trilogy was the best I read in 2018. Political intrigue, tension and an awesome mix of fantasy and science fiction elements. It's better to take your time though, as this has many story layers.

All I will say about this book, the final novel in the Tearling trilogy, is that I really don‘t know what to make of the ending. It was a bit of a letdown 🤷🏻‍♀️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ashley_Nicoletto Such a let down! I loved this series so much and couldn‘t believe this was her chosen ending. 1y
Melissa_J @Ashley_Nicoletto I know!!! I loved the first two books, and while I didn‘t dislike the ending it certainly isn‘t the way I would have gone. 1y

A horrible migraine kept me from doing much more than laying in bed today, but I‘m pain free for the moment and finally trying to get some reading done. I‘m switching things up by hanging out in our spare room - notice I‘m in a chair but her majesty Queen Eleanor has the bed 😂

I loved the first two books in the Tearling trilogy, but I‘m halfway through this one and don‘t care much. I shouldn‘t have waited so long to read it.

"How important is safety? Is it worth steadily undermining every principle on which a new nation was founded? What sort of nation will you have then?"

I really enjoyed this series. I don't know if I've ever read a fantasy trilogy that so effortlessly married the very real present to a fictional past and future. Definitely going to be recommending these ?

My reading plan this month is to finish a bunch of books I‘m in the middle of. I‘m going off plan with this selection, however, as it‘s time for me to finish this trilogy. I loved the first two books (especially the second) and have high hopes for this one 🤞🏻

Melissa_J @TrishB have you read this? I hope I like it. The endings of trilogies have disappointed me lately 😢 1y
TrishB I‘ve read- it‘s a very controversial ending- from reviews I‘ve read basically you‘ll think it‘s amazing or absolutely hate it. Not going to say what mine was until you get there. It‘s a good read though to see how the ends are tied up etc. 1y

Current audiobook. They changed narrators for the third time in three books but I like this one better than the second.

ErinSueMreads Oh I hate when that happens! I was listening to a trilogy a while back and almost quit the first book because I didn‘t like the narrator. Then the second book narrator was fantastic so I got all excited. Then boom! Third book the first narrator was back. Ruined a series that was kind of meh to begin with! 1y
KeepCalmWithBooksAndCoffee @ErinSueG It is so frustrating. I loved the first narrator so much. This third one is growing on me so hopefully it all works out. The books are great though so that helps!! 1y

So I know lots of people have strong feelings about this ending but I found it... meh. I dunno this series has been weird for me. The first book I found mediocre, the second mind-blowing and this final instalment was just slightly above mediocre for me. It wasn‘t my favourite way to tie off the series, but I felt like it fit with the direction of the books. #YA

TracyReadsBooks I thought the first book was ok, didn‘t love the direction of the second one, and haven‘t been able to make myself read the third even though I own it! I guess that means I‘m fairly ambivalent about the series?!? 2y
Soubhiville I‘ve only read the first, and I agree, it was a big meh for me. I‘m not interested in reading any more by her. 2y
Jabberwocky @Soubhiville I agree. I‘m kind of a completion-ist so I picked up the second at a good price and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it- she goes in a dystopian direction, but the third was another let down. @TracyReadsBooks The third follows the second one but it‘s not as well done/interesting. I‘ll be donating my copies. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

Went shopping for my #dystopianblues match today. I ordered some things online and once they arrive I should be ready to send it off.
Remember that resolution I made to use the library more and read the books I have before buying more? That lasted this many days only because I hadn't set foot in a bookstore yet... 🙈😱. But I have the first two books in this series and it was a bargain so I guess I don't feel too bad?! I did limit myself to one!

I‘ve seen this floating around Litsy the last few days, and thought I‘d join in to wrap up 2017!

1. First Read of the Year: The Fate of the Tearling

While I really enjoyed the first book in this series, I felt like the two sequels did not live up to the promise of the first. I liked the feminist take on the fantasy genre, but liked it less as the focus moved away from Kelsea and towards other characters and time periods.

Do you ever get home from work and accidentally blow through the last 60% of a book without noticing how much time passed? ...yeah, me neither 😇

This was a very engrossing series, and while I have some quibbles with a few plot points I enjoyed the trilogy as a whole and was very pleased to see so much complex female representation in a fantasy series. I have mixed feelings about the ending though, as most people seem to 😜

The final installment of this trilogy--I couldn't put it down! It wrapped up a lot of the lingering questions I had from book two--The Invasion of the Tearling. I liked that the secondary characters were true to form. I didn't like that it was told in flashback as much as it was; I missed the action of Kelsea. Good storytelling!

I was curious to see how Johansen would tie together so many narrative threads without the ending feeling contrived and, in the end, I was impressed - not completely emotionally satisfied, but satisfied enough. I enjoyed the trilogy even more than I expected to, and the end, though a little hollow on the feels front, made complete sense. Big ol' thumb's up.

The last instalment in the Tearling trilogy, I was prepared to be disappointed. Whilst I managed to remain spoiler-free, I was aware the author had been lambasted for the ending which many deemed a total cheat. I'm happy to say I loved this book as much as the first two. I would have liked to know more about the Red Queen but the end is mind-blowing and a brave choice. It left me reeling and reaching for the first book to start all over again!

TrishB I wasn't a fan of the ending - but have come to terms with it 😀 2y
