Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees | Patrick Horvath

Live, laugh, shed blood. Dexter meets Richard Scarry's Busy, Busy Town in this twisted debut graphic novel! This is small-town serial killer, upstanding citizen, and adorable brown bear Samantha Strong's cardinal rule. After all, there's a sea of perfectly ripe potential victims in the big city just beyond the forest, and when you've worked as hard as Sam to build a cozy life and a thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly fellow animal folk, warm decor, and the aroma of cedar trees and freshly baked apple pie...the last thing you want is to disturb the peace. So you can imagine her indignation when one of Woodbrook's own meets a grisly, mysterious demise--and you wouldn't blame her for doing anything it takes to hunt down her rival before the town self-destructs and Sheriff Patterson starts (literally) barking up the wrong tree. Cute critters aren't immune to crime in this original graphic novel debut by writer-artist Patrick Horvath.

I kept hiding this from my 8 year old son, as he was convinced it was for him! The graphic murder scenes committed by these sweet looking fluffy creatures would be way too much! And the juxtaposition of this really makes this book tickle the brain. A one-sitting read with violence and gore but still a cozy vibe?? Pure entertainment!

Billed as Dexter meets Richard Scarry‘s Busy Town, this is…disturbing. I‘ll leave it at that.

AllDebooks Woah, what a combo!! 😅 2w

The appeal of this dark comic described as Richard Starry‘s Busy Town meets Dexter is in the disconnect between illustrations that (mostly) wouldn‘t look out of place in a children‘s book with a storyline about a gruesome murder spree in a small town & a 🐻 who is concerned that her own murderous ways are on the verge of being uncovered.

That said, I thought this would have a more tongue in cheek vibe but this is just dark, which isn‘t my vibe.

AlaMich Richard Scarry + Dexter= 🫠😵‍💫 1mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @AlaMich, an interesting comparison! Sam is a serial killer without Dexter‘s moral code though, so it‘s a flawed comparison. 1mo

April #wrapup

6 read + 3 DNF:
4 audiobooks
1 children‘s book
2 graphic novels
2 print

My pick for April is the tagged, because I need more murderous bears and gory graphic novels in my life.

Reggie I think the tagged was talked about on Books in the Freezer. It sounded good. 3mo
Bookzombie @Reggie I think that is where I heard about it. It‘s funny because I don‘t listen consistently to the podcast because of how it blows up my TBR. 3mo

This was fun! It was like a call-back to the stories I‘d read my kids about cute animals and their lives in a small town. Except here we have serial killers. And Samantha is pissed that someone is murdering people in her hometown, which she never does; she goes to the big city for that. What will she do??

Roary47 This looks so cute and creepy at the same time. 😅 4mo
Lauranahe It was! Both cute and creepy! 4mo

Whoo hoo I finally got a bingo 🤣🤣. The tagged book got me the bingo. What a weird, dark, DARK graphic novel. I loved it, but proceed with caution. If you don't like horror or gore or violence, I would stay away.

Serial killers, murder, and a cute little town à la Richard Scarry! Count me in cause I absolutely loved this book.

In fact, I want a copy to come back to later. This was epic and I don't want to share much to ruin the story, but if you don't mind a gruesome cute graphic novel, check this one out!

Addison_Reads Love this series! 5mo

This graphic novel is wonderful! I love the contrast between the soft watercolor style of the artwork and the story. The book has great storytelling and had me on my toes with how gruesome and suspenseful it was. This book was great it imminently made me wanted to read the next book. Highly recommend. #graphicnovel #BeneathTheTrees

Happy Tree Friends meet Dexter

This is a twisted little tale, but it's been done before just in a slightly different format.

It was however entertaining and enjoyable

I stumbled upon this graphic novel at a local bookstore, and despite not knowing the author, I was instantly captivated by the storyline and artwork. Patton Oswalt‘s blurb sealed the deal for me: “Finally, murder and forensics are adorable.“ Count me in! #bookhaul

Disney meets serial killers in this cute but creepy story about a serial killer bear who is on the hunt for a different killer who's murdering people in his hometown.

I gave this volume 5 stars. The art style is amazing. The story is creepy and intriguing. I'm very excited to read more from this author and see more from the artist. My husband's really enjoying it, too.

This review is for the trade paperback of Beneath The Trees etc (pub date 9-17-2024). I just read the 6 issues that will comprise this volume. This came onto my radar a couple of days ago while listening to the most recent Books In the Freezer episode & Clay McLeod Chapman was raving about it. Described as Dexter meets Richard Scarry & this is pretty accurate. Although the ending felt a little rushed, this was a fun read with some solid issues.
