#GratefulReads: I‘m using two of my favorite playwrights for #favoriteauthor, #notsofavoriteauthor & #aplay prompts.

Oscar Wilde is one of my absolute faves. His wit is second to none, but he also has this dark side and genius when it comes to analyzing art. I could read him all day!

I love Shakespeare, but some of his work really hits home with me and some just glances off the mark — and I enjoy a variety of his work! Maybe I‘ll grow into it.

I don't enjoy reading John Updike's novels, and I've not had good luck with Norman Mailer, either (although I haven't tried Executioner's Song).

But thinking about books I don't like brings me down a little, so here's one of several rainbows we saw during our travels around town one afternoon this week. It was a good afternoon.

Soul of the Fire | Terry Goodkind

I have such a love/hate relationship with Terry Goodkind. I love his Sword of Truth series. It's honestly one of my favorite fantasy series, but I've read interviews of the author and he seems like such an asshole. 😧 Very arrogant and contemptuous. So while I love his books, Terry Goodkind is not one of my favorite authors!

Branwen @vivastory OMG. So I just watched that particular video and I am even more shocked and appalled at Goodkind's behavior! I'm also glad that most people seem to hate him, because I thought it was just me. I can't believe how mean he was about Robert Jordan! What an awful human being! 😡 I wonder if I reread his series if I will feel differently about it due to what I now know! 🤔 4y

DaveGreen7777 Curiosity got the better of me so I checked out the Daniel Greene video about Terry Goodkind. “If you noticed a similarity, then you probably aren‘t old enough to read my books.” YIKES! Yeah, that‘s more than a little douchey! 😒 And the insensitive remarks about Robert Jordan are absolutely reprehensible! 🤬 4y

I remember that when I first read the Sword of Truth series it was around the same time that I was reading the Wheel of Time series because I discovered them not too far apart. I remember thinking that were some striking similarities between the two! Imglad I wasn't the only one who thought that! 4y

GrilledCheeseSamurai @vivastory @DaveGreen7777 @Branwen Daniel Greene is a joy to watch. Over the past year his channel has grown in leaps and bounds. He isn't into all the book tube gimmicks (which can sometimes be fun) and produces a lot of thoughtful fantasy commentary. Most of it I agree with & some if it I don't. I love that he's full time creator now so he updates a lot too. 👍 4y

GrilledCheeseSamurai As for Goodkind...i actually liked the first 4-5 books. After that I lost interest. After finding out that he was a dirt bag human though I don't like supporting him anymore. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 4y

vivastory @GrilledCheeseSamurai I love it when Greene has his rants, because like you said they are thoughtful & he's definitely not reactionary. But he's not afraid to call someone out on their BS when it's warranted, like his recent video about Dessen 4y

GingerAntics I started his Sword of Truth series, but it seemed to get repetitive, then I started reading all these articles about how he actually stole the story from a different series. I ended up giving up after the third or fourth book because predictable. 4y

Sarah Dessen is definitely a #notsofavoriteauthor for cherry picking a two year old quote from a grad student at an obscure school and using her platform to turn a lot of people against this poor woman. Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Weiner were particularly egregious at heaping on the mean. I hope they realize someday that #kindnessisbest 😞

Given what Dessen did, this apology is very lame.

You‘re writers! 🙄🙄🙄 the whole situation was an exercise is women acting in a way they said they wouldn‘t act. People can not like your books. It doesn‘t mean they have “internalized misogyny.” It May mean they just don‘t like your writing and that‘s okay. I don‘t like Dessen, et al‘s shitty attitude/behavior. 4y

Megabooks @Eggs Exactly. On social media I try to err on the side of kindness. I am not perfect, but I try not to be rude, catty, or mean. I just went through a major depression in 2017 and 18 so I realize how important that is. (And I‘m sorry for anything weird I said on Litsy those years. It was so bad that I have huge gaps in my memory.) 💙💙💙 4y

Eggs @Megabooks I don‘t recall anything too weird; I just remember you were struggling. I‘ve been there too (with depression) and when younger my filters were sometimes nonexistent 😳🤯 🙄... Growing older and modern meds have changed me. I‘m happy for you that you‘re feeling better❤️❤️ 4y

Megabooks @Eggs It was horrible to a factor of 10 worse than in my 20s when I first started seeing a psychiatrist. I‘m doing better with changed meds and weekly appointments, but it‘s so hard. I lost a job I loved because of it. I just didn‘t ever think it would be that bad for me which is conceited. The whole experience has given me more empathy and made me much more humble. 4y

Megabooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Sarah Dessen found a two year old article that quoted a grad student saying she got involved in her (small, very small) college‘s first year reading programs selection board because she didn‘t want Dessen‘s novel chose. Sarah cut off here, but the student instead wanted to pick some nonfiction about racism in the criminal justice system. First, it was one reader‘s personal opinion, second Dessen cut out the part about 👇🏻 4y

So then a lot of writers including Picoult, Weiner, Gay, Vivian, Han, Angie Thomas, Silvera, Ng, Sepyts, Jemisin etc. heaped abuse on this student personally and publicly. It was sad and disappointing. Some have apologized, some haven‘t. I thought Jodi said some of the worst things and made a terrible apology. Jemisin hasn‘t apologized though, and she was very mean. The girl they attacked is in hiding. 4y

brittanythebookdragon I just read some of the articles and Dessen originally said something like we put our hearts and souls into our work. And like...exactly. You chose to do that and you chose to put it out there. Expect the criticism. Surely this isn‘t the first time someone hasn‘t liked her books. I‘m not sure why this group of grown women decided to gang up on this girl. 4y

Wolf Hall | Hilary Mantel

#GratefulReads Day23. I‘m jumping in here in the middle of the month, but when I saw today‘s post #NotSoFavoriteAuthor Hilary Mantel came to mind instantly. It feels a bit like cheating when you‘ve not completed a single book of hers, but I‘ve tried to read Wolf Hall so many times and I can‘t get past her writing style of no punctuation. It‘s such a fascinating subject but the way she writes seems arrogant, as if the rules don‘t apply to her.

RebL I wrote tips on reading this book, I found it so challenging. Also, all the characters who share a name have to be teased apart because they aren‘t well identified. 4y

TiredLibrarian The style does take some getting used to, but to me it was worth it. I liked Wolf Hall but *loved* Bring Up the Bodies, and can't wait for #3.

When I was a kid there was a six week PBS special on the wives of HenryVIII that I watched with my mom. Have wanted to read it for a long time but just keep giving up! ❤️❤️❤️ 4y
