Consider time-travel. Do you view it as dangerous to the future and fear changing history, and possibly even your future? Perhaps you think about it more frivolously and want to experience a large event. Do you wish you could go back and take a different life path? Regardless of what you imagine, are you imagining the possibility of that trip being physically dangerous and life-threatening? Likely not, but that's what Butler has done here, ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick weaving the "now" of 1976 and the "then" early 1800's. I didn't LOVE it, but it was pretty darn good, if infuriating at times.

I‘ve seen all the hype here on Litsy, and for me, the book lived up to it! Such a great story and characters. Schwab is a great writer. This is only the second book of hers that I‘ve read but it won‘t be my last!

I had been optimistic about this scifi, which is not my genre, because it was heavy on the history. But world building plus no quotation marks meant that I never really felt engaged in the story, just struggled to figure out what was going on. Not for me.

@TheAromaofBooks this is my #doublespin pick! (Does it still count of I didn't finish my #bookspin?)

Ericalambbrown Fern is adorable 🥰 3y
ferskner @Ericalambbrown thank you! I'm very fond of her. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I do not understand the no quotation marks!! Why do authors do that?! And yes, you are always welcome to read BookSpin or DoubleSpine or both - however it best works out that month!! 3y

Saadawi has written a powerful novel on the trauma and grief that engulfed Iraq, esp Baghdad, following the 2003 American invasion. This is a witty and satirical tale, using the gothic horror Frankenstein as inspiration.

Amid the unending car bombs, al-Qaeda, sectarian violence, and US actions, we see how daily trauma impacts the lives of everyday citizens. The inclusion of astrologers, djinn etc gave it a magical realism feel.

Highly recommend!

Librarybelle Great review! 3y
Cinfhen I‘ve been meaning to read this... thanks for putting it back on my #ReadersRadar ♥️ 3y

BarbaraBB Great review. I read it but you made much more out of it than I did 3y
alisiakae @BarbaraBB it was a tough one for me because I feel like there is the surface story (Frankenstein created out of body parts of bombing victims), and then this whole sub layer. The character Elishva really struck me. And then you have the characters that act like vultures in war-torn areas (like Faraj, and the magazine editor to an extent). 3y
KarenUK Awesome review 👍 3y
ChasingOm This one went on my TBR when it was published, then immediately got buried... 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y

Sometimes a book lands in your lap and you didn‘t even know you were looking for it. This is a #genreHybrid part memoir, part cookbook, part self-help. Beth Ricanati, shares the beauty of Judaism, its traditions & beliefs and how the art of preparing & baking challah ( traditional Friday night Sabbath bread) is good for your mental & physical health. I‘m looking forward to actually trying her recipe/method for making challah. 👇🏼

Cinfhen This was gifted to me by my son Eric, who had the pleasure of sharing a Shabbat dinner with Dr. Beth Ricanti. Book also works for multiple challenge prompts 🙌🏻♥️ 3y

Cinfhen THANK YOU 💕💕💕💕He‘s a sweet guy @Freespirit I‘m proud of the young man he‘s become. 3y
Kalalalatja Sounds like a lovely book, and the story behind only makes it more special! ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Thanks @Kalalalatja ♥️♥️♥️ 3y
Blaire Oh this sounds great. I‘m going to read and recommend it to my mom. 3y
Cinfhen It‘s such a wonderful gift @Blaire I hope you both enjoy it💕It does seem that Beth grew up in privilege, so u need to sort of look pass that 🙄 3y
CoffeeAndABook I‘ve heard so often that baking bread is good for your mental health, really therapeutic. And maybe even more so if it‘s imbedded in an age-old and/or religious tradition. If you know your ancestors centuries ago did this same thing at the end of a long trying week. I have yet to try it myself though 🙈 3y
KarenUK This sounds lovely..... Stacked! 💕🥖 3y
CoffeeK8 This sounds wonderful! Stacking this so fast! 💕 3y
Cinfhen I think everyone can gleam something from this book @CoffeeAndABook @KarenUK @CoffeeK8 and if the result is the delicious aroma of fresh bread even better😊 3y
CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen did you bake a challah from the book? Is it as good as I imagine? 3y
Cinfhen No, @CoffeeAndABook I need to work up my courage... baking challah intimidates me 3y
CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen I am intimidated by baking anything more sophisticated than brownies or chocolate chip cookies 😂 so I totally understand!! 3y
CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen ... but my brownies and choc chip cookies are to die for - so it‘s not a total write-off!!! 😃 3y
Cinfhen Yum!!!! Two of my FAVORITE desserts @CoffeeAndABook 3y
CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen wish I could invite you over for a 🍪 & ☕️!! 💓 3y
Reviewsbylola Glad you had a good choice for this prompt! 3y
Cinfhen That would be SO AWESOME @CoffeeAndABook ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Thanks @Reviewsbylola I wasn‘t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did 💕 3y
Centique Awww what a lovely gift from your son. I can see how baking bread - with the extra depth of culture and religion - would be therapeutic. I have tried to bake bread three times with no success but then I read a bakers blog about the different types of yeast - so I‘ve bought a different type now and hope that helps me!! 🤞🤞 3y

Lizpixie The classic Greek Myth about the kidnapping of Helen, Wife of Menelaus, by Paris, Prince of Troy & the subsequent siege of Troy by Menelaus, his brother Agamemnon & the Greek armies. Of course it ends in bloodshed, tears & many deaths before the fighting is done. All over one silly woman.🙄🏺🛡🗡 3y

Well that was probably the quickest #NonBuddyRead I ever participated in😉I think my expectations were overly inflated for this slim book. While it does pack a solid punch and makes lots of really compelling and infuriating observations about modern Korea, it wasn‘t the read I was anticipating. Interesting blend of facts ( told in footnotes) and fiction. Parts of this book reads like a memoir, so I‘m using this for #PoP21 #GenreHybrid 👇🏼

BarbaraBB So we tackled the same pop prompt on the first day of the year. What are the odds! I agree with your review. Good not great! 3y

Mehso-so

I could have known I am not the audience for this book. I never read seasonal and it‘s for a reason. I am not cozy and not religious and I don‘t believe in Santa.
I did like a few of the stories though, my favorite being The Mistletoe Bride (the one without the happy ending 😉).

However, by finishing this book I am able to tick off the first prompts for 2021s reading challenges!
