A pretty insightful history of how the last shipment of slaves landed in the U.S. #TIL when these slaves were freed and denied the option to go back to Africa, they banded together, worked hard and saved their money to be able to purchase land from their previous slave owner, who wouldn't even give them a discount. 4⭐️s #NFNov #PopSugarReadingChallenge #PopSugar2019 #Pop19 #PublishedPosthumously

Salt Slow | Julia Armfield
post image
Pickpick

Loved! 4.25⭐️s! Continuing my mini-reviews of each story below & in comments.

Smack: Armfield's strength at writing gross, yet captivating descriptions with a sense of foreboding is on full display here. A woman going through a divorce barricades herself inside the beach house where a smack of jellyfish continuously invade the shore, bursting open.

Cassandra After: A woman is visited by her dead girlfriend in this sad tale of shame & regret.👇🏽

lele1432 Formerly Feral: Could not be a more accurate title! Grotesque, unsettling, and filled with olfactory details that will make you want to shower immediately, this was a strange tale about an unlikely pair of sisters. (edited) 18h
lele1432 Granite: Slightly depressing. A woman ignores unsolicited opinions from other women and chooses between solitude and love on her own terms. 18h
lele1432 Salt Slow: A pregnant woman gives birth while living out at sea with her boyfriend, surrounded by monsters in some post-apocalyptic altered present. Great example of writing that shows rather than tells. 18h

I think this is what I will read next. It‘s been on my #botm backlist, plus it fills the #twofemaleauthors prompt for #pop19, #anothercountry for #nonfiction2019 and works for #NFNov.

What say you, Littens?

I‘m in a race to finish #popsugar2019 before the #pop20 list comes out. 😂

SheReadsAndWrites I love this photo ❤️ 7d
Lauram I really liked this book. (edited) 7d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Looks like all great reasons to me! It‘s that time of the year where things have to count for multiple categories 😂 7d

Nothing to See Here | Kevin Wilson

Pickpick

Hilarious! I am kicking myself for not getting this #BOTM pick, but now I'll get it as my bday freebie. I loved the MC, Lillian. Her humor was just what I needed! Bittersweet at times, this quirky novel showcases a wide variety of bad parenting lol, but ends on a hopeful note. I never knew combustible kids could be so fun! If you like quirky humor with a side of absurdity, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The #audio is fantastic! 4.5⭐️s!

Rachel.Rencher I had reservations about this one but now I think I need to grab it! 2w
Lynnsoprano Just read the review of this in the Washington Post this morning. Hi definitely need to read it! 2w

lele1432 @Rachel.Rencher I know what you mean. The description sounded so...out there lol. And I typically don't do magical realism. But I have to hand it to Wilson, his writing made everything seem so normal! I hope you like it! 2w
lele1432 @Lynnsoprano I was so pleasantly surprised! I've never read him before, but I actually have his other one from BOTM and just never got to it. Now I want to bump it up my TBR! 2w
vivastory I've been meaning to read him for years 2w

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine | Maika Moulite, Maritza Moulite

Absolutely♥️this! A tale of human nature where nothing is quite what it seems. Alaine is a hilarious, snarky MC who must come to terms w/ complicated family dynamics & a life that will never be the same. Steeped in rich Haitian culture & history, family curses, a charity start-up, & commentary on sometimes problematic foreign aid, this was a most enjoyable reading experience. The Great Bahni Turpin narrated & I highly recommend the audio! 4.5⭐️s!

Sleepless Nights | Elizabeth Hardwick

Just realized I never reviewed this. Probably between a pick and so-so, but I'm going with a pick because the parts I enjoyed were pretty luminous. Other sections were less engaging, but overall I found this group of memories that go back and forth through time to be interesting. I appreciated Hardwick's eye for acute observation! 3⭐️s #NYRBClub #NYRB #Classics #PopSugarReadingChallenge #PopSugar2019 #Pop19 #BookWithUnconventionalChapters

Recursion | Blake Crouch

Wow, I think I liked this even more than Dark Matter! The 1st half was a little bogged down by the science of what created FMS, but around pg 200 the action & suspense ratchets up & this mind-bender ultimately shows how humans can take a good thing & use it for cataclysmic disaster. Face-meltingly scary stuff. How willing are we to accept pain in life with the good? Are we really living if we have "cheat codes"? This needs to be a film! 4⭐️s!??

lele1432 I will say I had to switch from the audio to print. The male narrator, who also did Dark Matter, was good, but the added female narrator was almost robotic and really took away from Helena's POV. I flew through the pages once I switched. 4w

The Chain | Adrian McKinty
post image
Mehso-so

This had a great premise, but as other reviewers noted, kind of fizzled towards the end. The idea of an organization forcing child kidnap for ransom was intriguing, & I even liked the background on who was behind the chain. But I wasn't drawn in by any characters except maybe the kids, the bad guys were a bit cartoonishly evil, & by the end the chapters were too short & jumped around too much. Lots of suspension of disbelief required. 2.75⭐️s

If it weren‘t for #Popsugar2019, I never would have picked this #LitRPG, but I liked it!

Jason is a bullied, lonely teenager in the not-too-distant future whose favorite escape is video games. We follow him into a brand new, intuitive virtual reality game controlled by an AI. The game is fascinating, the story is fast-paced, if at times a little predictable, and Jason is a likable character. I may even continue the series. 😯

#Screamathon friends....throw some of your rec's my way!

I'm further behind on the #popsugar2019 challenge than I planned on being by October, so I am looking for a few #screamathon worthy books to fill the following prompts:

✨A book with 1 mil.+ ratings on Goodreads (that is not Twilight! 😂)
✨Pop, Sugar, or Challenge in the title
✨a book you see someone reading on TV or in a movie
✨a book with salty, sweet, bitter or spicy in the title

4thhouseontheleft Frankenstein is another with 1 mil plus ratings, but I've already read it. 2mo
Birdsong28 This is a really good book 2mo
SauerPatch The Shining! From the episode in Friends where Rachel finds a copy of it in the Joey‘s freezer because it scared him. 🤣 2mo

4thhouseontheleft @SauerPatch I forgot The Shining was the freezer book! So it would work for the #bbrc freezer prompt too! Thanks! 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @Birdsong28 Thanks, I‘ll take a look at that one! 2mo
Boooooks Gilmore girls for the tv one should give loads of options I know Christine, Cujo, Jekyll and Hyde and Rosemary‘s Baby are on the Rory Gilmore reading list 😁 2mo
Birdsong28 @4thhouseontheleft and @SauerPatch He also does that with Little Women as its Rachel's favorite book and they swap books and he doesn't like the fact that one of them isn't too well (tried to cover a spoiler lol 😂 ) 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @Birdsong28 Yeah, I remember Little Women (and Joey's reaction, LOL), but forgot which book was the first freezer book. I 💜Friends. 2mo
Shakespearience In Good Omens (Amazon Prime counts as on screen right?) one of the soldiers on screen is reading American Gods. 2mo
Shakespearience Also I haven‘t read it yet but one of the books on my TBR list is 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @Shakespearience Thanks! I‘m going to see if my library has House of Salt and Sorrows! 2mo
