STEP INTO THE FOLD.ITS PERFECTLY SAFE.The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isnt much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but hes content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve: far out in the California desert, a team of DARPA scientists has invented a device they affectionately call the Albuquerque Door. Using a cryptic computer equation and magnetic fields to fold dimensions, it shrinks distances so that a traveler can travel hundreds of feet with a single step. The invention promises to make mankinds dreams of teleportation a reality. And, the scientists insist, traveling through the Door iscompletelysafe.Yet evidence is mounting that this miraculous machine isnt quite what it seemsand that its creators are harboring a dangerous secret. As his investigations draw him deeper into the puzzle, Mike begins to fear theres only one answer that makes sense. And if hes right, it may only be a matter of time before the project destroyseverything. A cunningly inventive mystery featuring a hero worthy of Sherlock Holmes and a terrifying final twist youll never see coming,The Foldis that rarest of things: a genuinely page-turning science-fiction thriller. Step inside its pages and learn why author Peter Clines has already won legions of loyal fans.

???? A fun, light, quick SF with quirky characters, interdimentional multi-verse theme along with mystery, monsters and fun dialogue. I would say this one falls in line with something similar to a Michael Crichton book.
It definitely keeps you turning the pages and grabs you right from page one. This is NOT hard sci fi! It finishes the last 1/3 of the book as mostly horror so a nice blend of fun for all.

I read for Sword & Laser podcast. I enjoyed the slow build up & as someone who knows very little science I enjoyed the scifi side of the novel & it felt believable

There wasn't a huge amount of character development, but I think the story was mostly focussing on the mystery of the door & concentrated on the action rather than character development

I give it 3.5-4 stars. I would have enjoyed more backstory on some of the science team

I get why this person has done this, but IMO it's not okay to do this with library books 😡

LeeRHarry I was reading a non fiction book with a photo of 3 kids - someone had circled one of them and written “butt ugly” - worst I‘ve ever seen and I‘ve seen a few! 😡 3y
LazyOwl @LeeRHarry that shows the level of maturity in the previous reader. It just bothers me as it shows a complete lack of respect of other's property. 3y
LeeRHarry @LazyOwl I agree, if it could be worked out they should be banned from using the library. 3y

I LOVED this book! Great score-fi story about a guy with a pretty awesome brain who investigates a secret project that has supposedly created a teleportation door. It was a fun mystery, definitely creepy parts (which, come on, when you open a door to anywhere, you can go out, but others can come in, amiright?). Great suspense, loved all of it. My husband is reading it now, and I‘ve convinced my book club to read it this summer. Thanks @Avanders

RamsFan1963 I have this on my TBR shelves. I'm glad it's a good read, I was unimpressed with his book Ex-Heroes 5y
Avanders Yay I‘m glad you liked it! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 it‘s one of my favorite new sci-fi reads ☺️ @RamsFan1963 I‘d still give it a shot — I was also unimpressed with Ex-Heroes ... 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
Lauranahe I though ex heroes was good. Like it was a fun, quick read. But I only read the first one, and none of the rest, so...🤷‍♀️. But the fold is soooo good! I‘m excited for my book club ladies to read it; it‘s our July book. 5y

Slow to start but will completely consume you once you get going! Give this one some time and you won‘t be disappointed. I really hope he chooses to write more books in this world, the ending left me wanting to know more of “what‘s it there.” Thanks to @Avanders for such a great recommendation. Anyone had more sci-fi recs send them my way. Getting back into the genre feels good :)

Yeah... hmmm... meh... Clines did some great stuff at the beginning to hook me in; enough to get my 74 year old mother to buy it on Kindle for herself, but by the end, with the insect like “Alpha Predator” compared to a Jumbo jet and the unbelievable amount of C4 rigged to blow- it just all gets to be too much. Clines descriptions fall apart too and his wrapping it up with a love story all smells like he‘s fishing for a lucrative movie deal...

🎧 I love Sci-Fi and this has been on my TBR list for some time. It was so good I wonder what took me so long to get to it. Great plot and I loved the depth of the main character. Plenty of action to move the story along and keep the reader reading, or in this case listening. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I listened to this one on #audiobook and it was engaging and well narrated. The premise and set up were great. The ending was good, but felt a bit weak after the first three quarters of the book. But, that may also be because it felt a bit like a screenplay toward the end. Overall a pick, especially as an audiobook.

Zelma Very cool cover though! 6y

Due to my diligence with social media and the bookstore that was hosting the event I was successfully able to get Peter Clines to attend the event making him the ‘14th geddon‘

Cory Doctorow

Spent most of the day doing chores and listening to my first audiobook! Litsy has made me give audiobooks another chance. My other half is an avid audiobook listener and while I‘ve been forced to listen to whatever he was listening to in the car or kitchen or wherever, I just couldn‘t get into it. I‘ve listened to 5 hours of this today and think I might be hooked... We shall see! #blameitonlitsy

A really fun, action-packed SF thriller set in the present day. It's true what a lot of reviews are saying that it goes rather in a different direction the last part of the book -- I enjoyed the whole ride for my part but it will definitely be off-putting for some. Think poppy SF thrillers like Version Control and Dark Matter, diet-Crichton (lighter on the hard SF but made for movies action), and shades of Pendergast. I was glued.

First book down for 2018. That means $2 into the jar. I️ was really enjoying the science of this one. The MC has an eidetic memory and I️ really liked how he describes recalling stuff. The last third of the book however went totally “Men in Black” and kind of ruined the story for me. Overall, not a bad book though. I️ only give it 3 ✨

tomes4gnomes I had a similar reaction to this book. First 2/3 I was thinking, wow, this book is so good! But the direction it took at the end was totally disappointing to me. The ending can really make or break a story. 6y

So, here's what was in the MySciFi subscription box: 2 hard cover older novels, both of them decent picks, and one DVD. I knew it came with a DVD, but I'm not sure why it isn't a Sci-Fi DVD. I may write to them and ask. But considering I paid $9.95 plus shipping (which came to $15 total), this was pretty decent. Just one of those books would have cost that much new. So I think I'll let this one continue and see what I get next month.

parasolofdoom Oh I got a ya version if this once with really random DVDs. 6y
speljamr Ok. I guess I don't care so much since the books alone are worth the price. 6y

I loved the first 3/4 of this book. The premise is interesting, the characters are colorful, and the science fiction fan references are abundant. It held my attention on the plane and at the pool. Sadly, I found the ending to be terribly messy and out of sorts with the first part of the book. I still recommend reading it. I would like to know if others feel the same way about the ending, or if I am the only one who didn't care for it.

rubyslippersreads 😻😻😻 7y
Dogearedcopy I loved 'The Fold'; but it may because I saw the interconnectivity with '14'. There's a distinct biblioverse his characters live in in these two books (as opposed to The Junkie Quatrain or The Ex Series.) 7y

This is a fast paced sci-fi thriller/horror novel. I really got it to this about half way through. The beginning felt slow and full of scientific jargon but then the author kind of flipped the switch and went it to high gear. The ending is very suspenseful and definitely leaves room for sequels (yes please!).

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've read the first two in his superheroes vs. zombies series. I might have to check this out. 7y
The.Intentional.Reader Apparently there is one before this titled "14" which introduced some aspects of what is happening but you don't need to read that to get this book 7y

This book was amaze balls. Seriously read this book if you have read 14. But seriously read 14 first. Otherwise, The Fold will make no sense at all. The book has a major pay off in the end and I cannot wait to see what Clines does next with the Koutroverse story. This was such a good book that I can't even explain it. Read it and find out.

This is a very entertaining science fiction thriller. I expect it will be a movie in a few years. Most of the book is almost a hard science fiction mystery; the last few chapters are like a Preston/Child or Crichton thriller. Still, it's fun to read.

At a friends recommendation I read "The Fold" ahead of "14". I think it works very well. I've heard a lot of claim that this book has great characters, but that the story they are in is a little lacking. I feel like finishing this book and still having questions about why this happened, or who those people at the end of the book are is great when you follow it up with all of the answers in "14".

Feasibility studies, school prep, family gatherings (and drama in the bucketful), only make me wish for a quick escape and the invention of quantum travel. The only real and constant exceptions are a good book and strong mint tea. This one was gripping to start but kind of petered out. I continued to read partially in search of a conclusion and partially because the writing was fast paced enough that something was always happening.
