The Moth Catcher | Ann Cleeves
24 posts | 15 read | 7 to read
The Moth Catcher is the seventh book in Ann Cleeves' Vera Stanhope series - now the major ITV detective drama Vera, starring Brenda Blethyn. 'This case was different from anything Vera had ever worked before. Two bodies, connected but not lying together. And nothing made her feel as alive as murder.' Life seems perfect in Valley Farm, a quiet community in Northumberland. Then a shocking discovery shatters the silence. The owners of a big country house have employed a house-sitter, a young ecologist named Patrick, to look after the place while they're away. But Patrick is found dead by the side of the lane into the valley - a beautiful, lonely place to die. DI Vera Stanhope arrives on the scene, with her detectives Holly and Joe. When they look round the attic of the big house - where Patrick has a flat - she finds the body of a second man. All the two victims have in common is a fascination with moths - catching these beautiful, rare creatures. Those who live in the Valley Farm development have secrets too: Annie and Sam's daughter is due to be released from prison any day; Nigel watches, silently, every day, from his window. As Vera is drawn into the claustrophobic world of this increasingly strange community, she realizes that there may be deadly secrets trapped here . . . Also available in the Vera Stanhope series are The Crow Trap, Telling Tales, Hidden Depths, Silent Voices, The Glass Room and Harbour Street.

Well, two pages from the end and I still hadn‘t guessed the killer. Usual intricate plot and twists from Cleeves.

Two bodies are found in a small Northumberland town. Vera and her team are still struggling to find a connection when suddenly there is a third. I found the ending of this installment especially satisfying for some reason. It all came together and I had no idea who the killer was.

Another great Ann Cleeves read with the imperious, at times,“buddha like” Vera. Complicated plot that kept me engaged & guessing. Moth catching a plot line that is new to me. I never thought of moths as beautiful; just a nuisance eating holes in wool. Small claustrophobic community of recent retirees housed in a picturesque valley - secrets galore. Probation officers, social workers, a renegade violet daughter- its all there.

Mehso-so

More of a so-so for me relative to the rest of the series. I was restless with this one and felt like the characters hid important information for plot-advancement purposes.

A character in this book has a cold yet still attended a drinks party with his neighbours on the night the murders happened. This is far more alarming to me now than someone being murdered 😬😷

AkashaVampie Its just the new norm for everyone sadly. 3y

My first Ann Cleeves book. Thought I would check out the writing as I love the TV show Shetland, based on her books. This book is from her other series - Detective Vera, and I am not sure what to make of her. The mystery was slow moving but engaging and I liked the ending.

#SizzlinSummerBooks #day5 #Bug This is Bk7 in the "Vera" series about the murder of two people in a lonely manor house in Northumberland. When Vera Stanhope & Joe Ashworth arrive to investigate, they find elaborate moth traps all over the property. The victims are bug catchers, one has had moth photos published in scientific magazines & books and both have secrets that could've gotten them killed.I like book Vera better than TV Vera.More attitude.

JazzFeathers I have never heard of this series 🤔 7y

Finally finished this today. It's not that the book was horrible, it's a really good addition to the Vera Stanhope series, it's just I've not been in a reading mood. Hard to concentrate when you have giants using your back as a springboard. Vera & her team are having trouble connecting the three murders that have taken place in Gliswick Valley. The only connecting factor seems to be a hobby of moths. Very well written, had me guessing till the end.

#somethingforsept #septemberphotochallenge #day6 #bookanddrink Still flat on my back in bed so it's not a great photo, sorry. But the coffee is spectacular! The hubby made me a caramel cappuccino in my special mug.I bought it 13yrs ago when the first Krispy Kreme store opened in Australia. It's the perfect size, not too big or too small, & other than a few chips it's still going strong.I've cut back to 1 coffee a day, otherwise it's tea, pot & herbal.

Lizpixie Oh, and the book is great too! Still struggling with reading, I think the painkillers are giving me headaches so I'm having trouble concentrating. I've been watching Endeavour on Netflix, a young Inspector Morse so I've pulled out my old Colin Dexter books & giving them a reread, when I can. 8y
RealLifeReading Oh no. Hope you'll get better soon! 8y
Dragon I like all the Morse inspired shows but haven't read the original books. Must add them to the list. Feel better soon! 🙏 8y
Hooked_on_books I lived in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home of Krispy Kreme, for 4 years. At every meeting, conference, etc there was KK donuts, so I got a bit tired of them, to be honest. I had no idea they were in Australia! 8y

Still swapping back & forth between these two books and my #harrypotterreadathon audiobook. It's so hard to concentrate on reading when the painkillers make my head woozy. I'm determined to keep reading though, have to concentrate on something other than the small elephants playing hockey with my spine! I hope everyone else is enjoying this #biblioweekend for me.🤕😴💤🐘🐘

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I've been somewhat distracted from Harry Potter this weekend - but I'm reading the illustrated version and it's so beautiful! Hope you are on the mend! 8y
Lizpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag the illustrated philosophers stone is beautiful, I can't wait for my pre order of chamber of secrets to come in. Slowly feeling better, thank you, only two elephants today instead of the whole herd. Bit loopy still, obviously!🙃🐘🐘 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag To be expected, with strong painkillers, unfortunately ☺️ glad it's down to two elephants! Ooh, I hadn't thought about pre-ordering... Think I'll save it for an in store purchase :) 8y

Laalaleighh @lizpixie can I ask what causes your pain if it's not too personal a question? I have had chronic neck pain for the past six years (even had to medically withdraw from school) but recently I've found some alternatives that seem to be helping. I just hate seeing other people constantly in pain too because j know first hand how much it sucks and how absolutely draining it can be. 8y
Librarianaut I hope you feel better, soon. If only Madame Pomfrey were there to fix you up in a trice!!! 8y
Lizpixie @Laalaleighh I have degenerative arthritis in my spine, all of my pelvic joints, knees, wrists, ankles & shoulders and bulging discs in my neck & lower back. I also have small fibre neuropathy with autonomic involvement which causes my nerve endings to die & misfire, and due to the prolonged hormone treatments for endometriosis I have early osteoporosis and have had two lots of blood clots on my lungs. Damn, reading that I should be dead already! 8y
Laalaleighh @Lizpixie I'm sorry you have to deal with all that. I don't know if you've tried myofascial massage or cranial-sacral therapy but those have helped me with nerve pain and just pain in general a bit. I don't know if they would do anything for you or not. I just know that pain-meds are hell and only tolerable because they at least help with pain. You'll be in my thoughts. 8y
Dragon Glad there's only two elephants today , take care 8y

Still in bed, still in pain, still frustrated beyond belief but still reading at least! Taking a break from all the fantasy I've been reading and giving the last Vera book a go. A house sitter is found dead in a country estate and when DI Vera Stanhope & team arrive, she finds the body of a second man inside the house. The only thing connecting them is a fascination with moths. I love Ann Cleeves books, she's a great writer. #biblioweekend
