Adelaide: A Novel | Genevieve Wheeler

Adelaide is a beautifully-written, deeply-felt exploration of what it means to love and be loved... A remarkable debut. Jill Santopolo, New York Times bestselling author of The Light We Lost A modern, yet timeless love story from a fresh new voice in fiction. Adelaide Williams is a 20-something American, living in dreamy London. With wonderful friends and fierce ambitions, Adelaide has little interest in finding The One right now, but when she meets Rory Hughes on a dating appa charming Englishman whos been placed there by fate, she swearsthat all changes. All of a sudden, Adelaide finds herself completely in love. Does he respond to texts? Honor his commitments? Make advanced plans? Sometimes, rarely, and no, not at all. But Adelaide is convinced that if she just tries and fights and loves a little harder, hell fall for her as deeply as shes fallen for him. (He has to... right?) Because its clear to Adelaide that their fate was written in the stars. Why else would they have attended that same play last fall, or that Yankees game in 2016? Their paths never crossing until just the right moment. Their relationship is made all the more complicated when Rory is thrust into a season of unexpected mourning, and soon Adelaidethe ever-supportive Adelaidebegins to fall apart herself, while striving to hold him together. A millennial love story, Genevieve Wheeler's Adelaide explores the complexities of grief, the power of friendship, and the nuance of mental health. With unflinching honesty, and zany warmth, this raw, vulnerable novel captures the timeless nature of what its like to be young and in lovewith your friends, with your city, and with a person who cannot, will not, love you back.

This one was absolutely worth every bit of praise it got. I loved Adelaide so much. This character is eccentric and beautiful and speaks to my soul. There is too much to say about this book. It‘s heartbreaking and happy and just perfect, in my opinion. The writing is truly a work of art and I am so happy that I read this book. Adelaide is going to stay in my mind for a very long time.

Idk what inspired me to read this bc I usually cannot stand romance. Lowkey though I felt like this wasn‘t meant to be a romance at all so maybe that‘s why it was fine. The whole book I just wanted Adelaide to grow balls and value herself, but honestly we‘ve all been in her shoes so who am I to talk. Just a very realistic look at what it feels like to desperately want to be loved (oh yeah I‘ve been there)

My oldest daughter‘s name is Adelaide, and like the eponymous character she feels everything deeply. So it felt like a sign. A tough book in the sense that it‘s practically telling my daughter‘s future; Adelaide the character goes through the same struggles I have often imagined my daughter will go through.

As far as the book itself: the subject matter has been done, and done better but that‘s not to say Adelaide isn‘t worth the time.

Wanted to like this book, which kept getting high recommendations to read. Took me a long time to get through starting and stopping it, but kept hearing good reviews and thought it had to get better. Maybe too detail oriented for me, and frustrating to read. Understand the sympathy and good awareness for mental illness, but hard for me to stay engaged. Probably could cut the word count in half and I might have enjoyed it more.

I tried. I really really tried. I stopped at pg 140. I couldn‘t do it. It‘s not that is “a hard read” it‘s that it was insanely BORING. The main character was annoying as hell, Rory was an asshole and Adelaide‘s friends were clearly too good for her and deserved better. Everytime I put this book down I dreaded picking it back up. I lost track of how many times I rolled my eyes.

Idk, I don‘t think I‘m the target audience for this one.

A very real book about a woman and her journey in a very unhealthy relationship and coming to terms with mental illness. There were many times I wanted to yell at Adelaide. To save her. It was not a light book. It's a relatable and realistic story unfortunately. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

On the surface Adelaide is an exploration of unrequited love and mental health, but it also resonates with the general impossibility of being a woman. There was an energy of effort, thoughtfulness, and depletion that women tend to exert just to be met with an air of being treated as though they‘re “not enough.” I see this dynamic in the workplace, at home, in friendships and marriages; in every realm that women roam!

BirdLaVie This book really nailed a feminist lens with an addictive, page-turning quality. 4.5 ⭐️ 8mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

The feelings! This book made my heart ache in a very particular way, poignantly evoking the insecurities and pain of young adulthood and toxic relationships. It reminded me a little bit of “Normal People”. Take care when reading and check content warnings; it is dark and emotional, but ultimately hopeful and quite beautiful.

This book gave me very mixed emotions. I liked it but didn't love it. I didn't really look at it as a deep love story. It was about love yes. But a love story no. Some of the language to me seemed to be thrown in periodically for some unknown reason. Maybe to reach a word limit..
I gave this 4 stars and I do recommend it. It's a good debut book.

Wasn‘t what to expect with this one, and I think that‘s the best way to read it. I‘m not going to call it a romance, because the main relationship portrayed is so unhealthy and one-sided. Adelaide is a lovely character and I adored her - I could relate so much to some of her struggles. A few triggers throughout, so beware! #tbrtarot #withaprologue

This book was heart breaking yet beautiful. It brought up a ton of emotions for me but the lesson behind this novel was just amazing. This is definitely one of those books that I had to sit for a while after finishing because I was just so overwhelmed with emotion. This is probably my favorite book of the month.

You forget what it feels like to have fallen apart once you've pieced yourself back together, what the scars feel like once they've healed. You know, vaguely, where they were, how the fresh cuts had stung, but you can't run your finger over the surface anymore and say, 'Here. Here's where you hurt me.' The pain will eventually dull. But not yet.

This was well-thought out and I just wanted to reach in the pages and give Adelaide a hug. The author could have written Rory as a complete cad, but it was more nuanced than that which made for an interesting, thought provoking relationship story.

This was a slow burn. At 75 pages, I was wondering if I wanted to continue. I am glad I continued. Adelaide frustrated me but was also relatable. Rory, that is a whole can of worms that I won't even open in this review.

I totally surprised myself with these #BOTM choices. I never go for thrillers with BOTM (prefer to listen to my thrillers through the library), but I can‘t ignore the Outer Banks setting, and I‘m also craving quick, brain candy reading. I also don‘t usually willingly go for heavy reads like Adelaide, but the sneak preview intrigued me, and I could probably use help feeling some feelings right now 😆

CBee I picked Adelaide too. Sad, melancholy, heavy - I am just SO drawn to those kinds of books for some reason. I have a lot of feelings already on the daily, but something about those books helps me. Like making me feel someone else‘s feelings for a bit? Anyway, for some reason it helps 😂 13mo
jlhammar I'm taking a chance on Adelaide as well. And I added The House is on Fire. I considered the Miranda, but I haven't read her before and the teenager element had me wondering if it would be more annoying than entertaining. Hope it's a good page-turner for you! 13mo
CBee @jlhammar I almost added House is on Fire but then saw that they had As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow so I grabbed that one 😍 Plus Hello Beautiful 😊 Excited!! 13mo
