Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | J.K. Rowling
"'There will be three tasks, spaced throughout the school year, and they will test the champions in many different ways ... their magical prowess - their daring - their powers of deduction - and, of course, their ability to cope with danger.'"The Triwizard Tournament is to be held at Hogwarts. Only wizards who are over seventeen are allowed to enter - but that doesn't stop Harry dreaming that he will win the competition. Then at Hallowe'en, when the Goblet of Fire makes its selection, Harry is amazed to find his name is one of those that the magical cup picks out. He will face death-defying tasks, dragons and Dark wizards, but with the help of his best friends, Ron and Hermione, he might just make it through - alive!

The scene just before the final task of the Triwizard Tournament where Harry is told his family is waiting for him in the next room wrenches my heart every time I read it. He‘s convinced no one will be there and he feels so alone. He opens the door and there are Molly and Bill Weasley, His chosen family, ready to cheer him on. 💙

The.Great.Catsby This was my absolute favorite. I had to pause the book because my heart exploded with such love for Molly and Bill. I've only read it a couple months ago, but I still think about it a lot. 1mo

I did not want to stick with this one, but I did. The plot developed too slowly. I was also disturbed trying to determine who Rowling intends her target audience to be. It seemed certain parts were juvenile, but then others were rather mature.

Book #4. When Harry‘s make comes out if the goblet, no one more than he is surprised as he‘s forced in to being a champion in the tri-wizard tournament. The anxiety of increased pressure, pain in his scar, death eaters being more visible, and the knowledge that he-who-must-not-be-named is coming back in to power is almost too much.

The death of Cedric marks a change in the tone of the Harry Potter series. Voldemort‘s corporeality means he is now a very real threat and beloved characters will die before the battle is over. It is all a little too dark for a 6 year old! But once you start, it is difficult if not impossible to stop. Particularly when that 6 year old is now quite obsessed. As much as I love HP, I do dread the inevitable nightmares.

So much is happening here! We get to learn more about the wizard world, and there is a lot of funny stuff too. Reading about how helpless wizards are in our world cracks me up.
There are also multiple side plots (Ludo Bagman!) and most of them are resolved/revealed very well. We also get to know Fleur & Krum! The ending is quite emotional, and sets up the tone for the rest of the series.

After I finished Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire I actually reached my reading goal for this year 🥳
12 books isn‘t a lot but I‘m actually really proud. Since I started studying four years ago I haven‘t had the energy to read books for fun. This year I wanted to change that and I‘m now prioritizing reading in my spare time 📖

This is such a great book and even though I know exactly how it ends I still found it hard to stop reading whenever I had to do something else.
Like in the other books I loved the extra details that weren‘t in the movie. However I do have to admit that I found it odd how the SPEW project just slowly lost importance throughout the story.

I read this one in July. It was so good to re-read this book. This world is so fantastic! I loved the idea of the of The Triwizard Tournament and I cried with what happened to Cedric😢from my house. It was so lovely how the Wesleys were so supportive with Harry. I really loved this book as much as the third one but still disappointed with the author. But I can‘t forget this series. 3.9/5⭐️

Plowing through and finally getting to the good stuff! I have read this book so, so many times and I'm hoping I enjoy the ride this time, too! #JulyTradition #TheBoyWhoLived

TheAromaofBooks For some reason a lot of people seem to associate this series with Christmas (I guess because they always play the movies at Christmas time??) but for me it's totally a summer thing because I always read them in July as well!!! 6mo
Andrea313 @TheAromaofBooks Yes! The release of books 2-7 were all in July, and I would read and re-read them ad nauseam throughout the entire rest of the summer. And while I'd also read them the rest of the year, the strongest memories I have are of late summer nights and days on the beach with each of these. ❤️☀️ 6mo
TheAromaofBooks Yes!! I didn't start reading them until the 5th book came out. I was housesitting for friends who lived near a huge metropolitan library and I went back almost every day that week to get the next book & spent most of my time on their screened-in back porch with their snoozing dog. Housesat for them the next few summers & reread the series + the new book each time. I love when certain books bring back specific reading memories!! 6mo

The fourth book of the franchise sets the tone for the upcoming series.Though largely marketed as series for children, GoF is definitely the one where things get 'dark'. It also gives a glimpse into several characters' origins and their background, which will gradually unfold in the next set of books and explain why things are the way they are (hope that made sense?!).

Discussion Time! Thank you for your responses this week. I love reading together! 🏆 #potteraday

1. Did the violence at the World Cup remind you of police brutality against people of color? Does this have anything to say about our ideas of law enforcement?
2. If portkeys are supposed to look like trash, would good samaritans picking up rubbish constantly be sent random places? Or is the Goblet the only one not time stamped?

🔻Continued Below🔻

Linsy 3. What perspective do you think this book is from? Harry‘s? Omniscient?
4. What‘s your least favorite part?
5. Which scene do you most wish they‘d put in the movie?

Bonus Question! For those that have read or seen Cursed Child, what do you think of the show‘s treatment of Cedric? Does he get short shrift?
7mo
nanuska_153 Thanks for that @Linsy some interesting questions! (1) The treatment of muggles always has a connection with racial discrimination, but it didn't make me think of police brutality,it wasn't really the aurors who were torturing the muggles, more like the equivalent of the KKK. (2) I've always thought they were time stamped since they always wait for it to be activated. The cup is a bit of an oddity and I've always wondered about that. 7mo
nanuska_153 (3)Although the narrator is not Harry, I think all books are mainly written from his POV, we rarely see things that he doesn't see. (4) Every time I see house elves self-deprecation I could live without it, although their existence does raise interesting questions. (5) Watched the movie just once and didn't particularly enjoy it, I just remember they left too much out, but it didn't leave any significant memory. 7mo
See All 11 Comments
nanuska_153 (Bonus) The Cursed Child doesn't make any sense in general, this in particular doesn't make sense, Cedric is supposed to be all honesty, fair play and embodiment of the Hufflepuff house, so that sudden turn it's inexplicable. 7mo
Sargar114 1) @nanuska_153 good point re KKK vs police brutality, I would agree it is more like that. 2) I do wonder if there would be some kind of trigger on the portkey that only magicians could engage and so if a muggle touching it wouldn‘t be able to activate the magic to accidentally transport, but yeah I think it‘s time bound too. 3) it seems 3rd party but mostly Harry‘s perspective 4 & 5) kind of a combo ⬇️ 7mo
Sargar114 I haven‘t finished the book yet, but this is a re-read for me. Same with the movies. But I think Hermoine‘s crusade on behalf of house elves is important and it makes me sad that it is not in the movies. Bonus) I never read the cursed child, but seems Cedrick gets the shaft anyway 7mo
CBee I‘m actually watching the movie (in shifts haha) and there is SO much more in the book. In a way I felt like the book was a bit longish and I didn‘t enjoy it as much as the others I‘ve read thus far. I‘ve not read the Cursed Child but will once I finish all the original books (this is my first time reading 😂). 7mo
CBee Treatment of muggles in general - very much like discrimination by extremist groups and such. Cedric - felt too soon for him to die BUT it showed just how far Voldemort would go and how he has absolutely no heart left. Was a perfect example of true good vs true evil I think. 7mo
bthegood @linsy @CBee @Nanuska153 @Sargar114 I think treatment of muggles is discrimination in general. Most baffled by house elves - even the people who are distressed by poor treatment of muggles seem fine with poor (true slaves) treatment of house elves. These are characters I could have done without and JKR could have written in house elves with similar roles without being slaves - they are never liberated as a group in the series - (edited) 7mo
nanuska_153 @bthegood I agree, what I find more distressing about house elves is that even Muggle borns (apart from Hermione) don't seem to see a problem with slavery. You could argue that the ones who were born in wizarding families never knew differently, but muggle borns should know that it's plainly slavery and be shocked it exists.Harry only feels bad in relation to Dobby but rolls his eyes at Hermione's complaints against slavery. 7mo

Finished another chapter-a-day readalong, another book that benefitted from a slower-paced reread. There are a lot of moving pieces in this one and it was sometimes hard to keep myself to just a chapter!! One thing really hit me this time - towards the beginning of the book the entire reason that Arthur Weasley heads off to get Moody out of trouble is because Cedric Diggory's dad asks him to - and in the end, I found myself wondering what would⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) have happened if he hadn't? Would fake-Moody have been arrested or in some way punished by the Ministry of Magic that would have made him unable to come to Hogwarts to teach? Just a random thing that struck me this time around haha

As always, thanks for hosting #PotteraDay @Linsy - I'm even looking forward to Order of Phoenix, despite its standing as my least-favorite of the series! 😂
8mo
bookandbedandtea What an intriguing question! I suppose Crouch would have done the same to whoever got the DDA job in Moody's place but it's interesting to think of what might have changed. 8mo
Linsy @bookandbedandtea @thearomaofbooks Yes, fascinating! Or would fake-Moody have gotten caught? Even if Crouch did just impersonate a different teacher, it would have been harder to play off the drinking polyjuice potion every hour; any eccentricities would have most likely been more obvious. 7mo
