Everything We Didn't Say
Everything We Didn't Say: A Novel | Nicole Baart
From the author of Little Broken Things, a race-to-the-finish family drama (People) following a mother who must confront the dark summer that changed her life forever in order to reclaim the daughter she left behind. Juniper Baker had just graduated from high school and was deep in the throes of a summer romance when Cal and Beth Murphy, a childless couple who lived on a neighboring farm, were brutally murdered. When her younger brother became the prime suspect, Junes world collapsed and everything she loved that summer fell away. She left, promising never to return to tiny Jericho, Iowa. Until now. Officially, shes back in town to help an ill friend manage the local library. But really, shes returned to repair her relationship with her teenage daughter, whos been raised by Junipers mother and stepfather since birthand to solve the infamous Murphy murders once and for all. She knows the key to both lies in the darkest secret of that long-ago summer night, one thats haunted her for nearly fifteen years. As history begins to repeat itself and a dogged local true crime podcaster starts delving into the murders, the race to the truth puts past and present on a dangerous collision course. Juniper lands back in an all-too-familiar place with the answers to everything finally in her sights, but this time its her daughters life that hangs in the balance. Will revealing what really happened mean a fresh start? Or will the truth destroy everything Juniper loves for a second time? Baart once again brilliantly weaves mystery into family drama in this expertly-crafted novel for fans of Lisa Jewell and Megan Miranda.

A couple is murdered next to the Baker farm and Junipers younger brother has always been the suspect. When Juniper returns to town years later to care for a friend, the mystery of who killed the Murphys is still lingering. Juniper not only sets out to repair her relationship with her estranged daughter, but also fulfills a need to piece together what happened that tragic night that the Murphys were killed.

Really enjoyed this one! Told in dual timelines, this blends a murder mystery with family drama, and I was here for it!

I enjoyed reading this. That is all I will say about it. Saying what I enjoyed may spoil it for others. I will say the author's choice of character names gave me joy. I love the names Juniper, Sullivan, Willa, and Indigo.

I give this one a Pick because the duel timeline kept me interested and wanting to read. However, overall it‘s not my favorite small town mystery. I did appreciate how realistic the ending was and the grit of the characters.

A fast-paced page turner, this novel about a 15 year old unsolved murder falls solidly in the “estranged woman returns and unravels family mystery” trope, but didn‘t feel boring or derivative. I enjoyed the dual timelines, small town setting, and complicated family/friendship dynamics. I did predict two major plot points, but one particular reveal left me picking my jaw up off the floor! My first Baart novel, and I would read more. 4⭐️

TheLudicReader I also really enjoyed this one. 2y

It was fine but forgettable. Another of those “woman comes back to her hometown and becomes involved in an unsolved murder” types. I had a bit of trouble believing all of the situations here but it was a distraction from the stresses of life for a bit.

The story in this moved a bit slowly for me at a lot of points in the book. I liked the characters but I didn‘t love any of them. I do think that it‘s hard to use the storyline of the main character going home to an estranged family and daughter with an old crime in the background that needs to be solved. There aren‘t many fresh takes for this trope and I definitely predicted the ending early on. I thought it was good, but I didn‘t love it.

This is a dual time-line narrative about Juniper, who returns to her hometown to help out a friend, but also to figure out who is planning to do a podcast about a double murder that happened 15 years ago, a murder for which her brother was implicated but never charged. I really enjoyed this book, and Juniper‘s determination to mend relationships with her family and figure out whodunnit. There‘s a splash of angst, too, and I am there for it.

Just the right pacing for a split time mystery, in my opinion. Kept me guessing until the end.

I can‘t any more with this. I am destined to only learn half of the things we didn‘t say, not everything. 😋 The plot sounds interesting, but literally every time I pick up this book I get through 20 pages and fall asleep. I‘ve read 140 pages so I‘ve tried a lot! But I‘ve started and finished several other books without getting traction on this, so I give up.

If you‘ve read it, would you mind spoiling the ending for me (hidden) in the comments?

EvieBee It‘s great on audio! Are you still sure you want it spoiled? 2y

You know, given the mixed reviews I've seen for this one I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! It was written well and deviated just enough from the standard #BOTM thriller fare. It actually felt more like a mystery than a thriller to me, but entertaining for sure. I only wish that June and Willa's rekindling relationship had been fleshed out more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EvieBee I really enjoyed this one! It really surprised me. 2y
Aims42 Yes, June & Willa ending was critique of mine as well! After their story unfolded, I wanted a full closure and I felt like we didn‘t get it 2y

Juniper Baker graduates from high school when her brother becomes the prime suspect of a double murder. Now, she returns to find the true killer, and to patch things up with her teenage daughter.
This is my first read by Nicole Baart. It was interesting, but I did not really think the characters were all that interesting.
Thanks Atria Books and NetGalley.

This started off as a sleepy, domestic mystery. It gradually picked up
so much speed that I had to finish it in two sittings. It wasn't sloppy,
overly dramatic, or hollow in its depictions. Surprisingly very PG rated,
which I found refreshing after some heavier reads. Highly recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

I can see why this was a #BOTM pick! I literally couldn‘t put it down and stayed up WAY too late to finish it in just about one sitting! Juniper returns to her small Iowa hometown, ostensibly to help her friend & librarian but also to put a stop to a podcast looking to highlight the brutal murder of her neighbors 15 years ago- where her brother was the key suspect. Weaving together past and present, this one moves fast & is impossible to put down!

EvieBee I am really enjoying this one! At about 80%, I'm going to give it 4 stars regardless of the ending. 2y

🎧 I‘m glad I‘m not alone in the low rating over at GoodReads. This is the most popular book on my library Loan list right now and I was unimpressed. 3.5 stars but I rounded up. The first half of this murder mystery, thriller was a hot mess. The second half picked up the thriller part but not enough. It was ok with an ending that surprised me so don‘t let my comments deter you if you‘re interested, just not for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

This book starts out slowly and builds, so is not a great choice for someone who needs an intense start to capture their interest. That being said it does build into a very good thriller and one that I enjoyed. I gave it 3.75/5 stars.

This is my first book by this author. I look forward to more. This book was totally great. Breathtakingly beautiful. Written to perfection. It was very heart touching. Heartbreaking. Full of love and pain. A bit of laughter along the way. It had it all.
Absolutely gorgeous. Take your breath away beautiful. And sad.
It's honestly that kind of book. That one you are so happy you read.

I struggled with this book. Ultimately, I enjoyed it. After reading the acknowledgements, the feelings I had reading the book began to make more sense. Written during the pandemic, the struggles we had during that time seeped into the construct of this novel. This is a book about secrets, lies, small town prejudices, broken families, murder, environmental issues, love, trust, betrayal. It gave me much anxiety, but it‘s a good read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This had so much potential...here is one of the few instances where the book needed to be longer. If it had more details and character development, this light read could have been a great slow-burn small-town mystery. The story was interesting, but it could have been much more captivating. Not the best #botm pick for me personally, but I'd recommend this author for those who don't like dark thrillers but want something "edgier" than a cozy!

erank58 As a (spoiler-ish) side note--I really wish the events leading up to June leaving Willa with her parents were addressed with more details. This could have been a great exploration into the tragedy of postpartum depression and how it affects some women deeply, which is a topic I don't see in literature that often 👍 3y
