Stopped by Barnes and nobles cause today is the day I went full out in actually treating myself since that hasn't happened in literally months. The Moby dick copy is not only pretty but soooo heavy that it's a legit brick. Very pretty brick. Will post more about it cause omg! The others are also pretty! Like omg! xD

#OnThisDay in 1851 Moby-Dick was first published. Like many works of art, the novel would remain unrecognized during Melville's lifetime, selling only 3715 copies and earning the author a mere $556.37 before his death in 1891. A posthumous reprint garnered some critical interest, and slowly a following was built, leading to Carl Van Doren's 1921 claim that Moby-Dick was "one of the greatest... in the... literature of the world." #HistoryGetsLIT

I will write a full review this weekend, but having just finished I want to comment that spending the month with this has been one of the richest reading experiences of my entire life. 💙💙

DGRachel My American Lit professor would love you. I was a disappointment. 😂 6mo
vivastory @DGRachel Although I strongly believe in classics (contemporary & traditional/ Western & non-Western) being part of the classroom curriculum, I am firmly opposed to assigned reading. One of my fave college English classes involved a major paper on a book of our choosing off of a list that was several pages long that the teacher was familiar with. 6mo
merelybookish Congrats! It is always wonderful to read a classic and understand why it has endured! It doesn't always happen but satisfying when it does. I look forward to your review. 6mo

vivastory @merelybookish Thanks! More often than not, I find that they are def. worthwhile. It's just a matter of making time in my schedule to be in the right headspace for them. 6mo
Branwen I'm glad this was such a great experience! 6mo
vivastory @Branwen I'm thinking of starting Ulysses on Bloomsday 🤔 6mo
DGRachel It wasn‘t assigned reading for me. My professor, for whom I had immense respect, said that every student of literature owed it to themselves to read it. So, I read it. It took me an entire summer. My ex would tell you HE suffered through it even though I‘m the one who read it. 🤣🤣 6mo
Branwen @vivastory YES! That's awesome! And super exciting! I'm hoping to be finished it by then! 6mo
Addison_Reads I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It is in my top 5 greatest books ever read. 6mo
vivastory @Addison_Reads I can see why! I even became a bit more intrigued by Starbuck by the end. Certainly not a favorite character, but he is more complicated than I initially thought 6mo
LeahBergen Damn it. You‘re going to make me read it now. 🤣 6mo

Thnx so much to @DrexEdit for tagging me for the top 21 of 2021! 🤗 Cant do 21, but here‘s my top 5. So, here are the 5 best books I read in 2021, with links to the respective reviews on my YouTube channel. ☺️

DrexEdit Wow! That's a terrific list! I'm looking forward to listening to more of your reviews. I agree completely with your assessment of To the Lighthouse. I read it once in college and then again in the last couple of years and I think it reads better the older you are and have experienced time and thoughts of legacy the way Ms. Woolf writes about them. 11mo
TH3F4LC0N Thnx so much! 😊 To the Lighthouse really was a fantastic book! It was also more readable than I was anticipating! I also have a copy of Mrs. Dalloway I‘m looking forward to reading, but I‘m gonna save that for 2022! 😁 11mo

Finally read this beast of a book! This space here is far too small to tell what I thought of this book. Suffice it to say, Moby Dick truly is probably one of the five greatest books ever written, and almost assuredly the greatest written by an American. If you wanna know my full thoughts on this masterpiece, you can check out my in-depth review/analysis of it at:

https://youtu.be/NxWyTM1fAcI

In closing, read this book if you haven‘t! 🤯

I was wondering about the relationship between Quequeg and Ishmael. Google came up with this. Crain asserts that Melville used "cannabalism" as a euphamism for "homosexuality."

Graywacke Trying to remember what cannibalism is referenced in MD. A lot of the homosexual references are pretty brilliant and funny. Lots of strategic ‘q‘s in there too. 13mo
the_hibernator @Graywacke I haven't gotten very far yet, so I don't know how much about cannabalism is really mentioned. 🤷 13mo

Thanks for the tag @Nessvamusic !!
1. Probably anything over 500pgs, but I have a lot of books that are more mental chunksters haha Like The Great Gatsby isn't that long, but I really hate that book so it feels like forever when I'm reading it.
2. I'm not a big audiobook person because my mind tends to wander, so I like to read them & I prefer physical books to ebooks as well, even for chunksters!!

Nessavamusic I 100% agree about The Great Gatsby! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Nessavamusic - I know so many people love it so I reread it as an adult thinking maybe high school me just didn't get it... but no, I still hated everyone 😂 1y
The.Great.Catsby It's really not a book that is easy to absorb. I did the same thing, thinking the book would be better as an adult. But its just too dense. The 2013 movie though 😍😍😍😍😍 1y

Ishmael sets sail on the open sea with a man bent on getting Moby Dick, a whale who bit off his leg.

Overall I enjoyed listening to this book, I think it‘s way longer than necessary and could have cut out quite a bit without interfering with the story.

GingerAntics I‘ve never been able to do this story because it‘s so implausible that a whale attacked a human being. That just doesn‘t happen in the wild. That‘s a phenomenon known only to whales in captivity. 2y

This...needed an editor. I'm glad I completed it but I'm not entirely sure why it's a classic, unless it's that it captures 19th century whaling in pretty excruciating (and unnecessary for the story) detail. There are certainly some parts that are very well written, but they almost get lost in the listing of whale sizes or similar matters.

Kalalalatja I felt the same way. I was bored out of my mind during most of it 2y

A couple Moby Dick prints for my Moby Dick/nautical inspired bathroom. Yes, I am one of *those* strange Moby Dick people.

Got them from this Etsy shop (and if Moby Dick isn‘t your thing, there are many other literary themed items): https://www.etsy.com/shop/DareToDreamPrints?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_...

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Omfg, you have a nautical Moby Dick bathroom too?!?! ❤️😱❤️ My husband thinks I‘m crazy! I‘m glad I‘m not the only one! 😂🤣😂 2y
shortsarahrose @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm That‘s so cool! 🐳 I needed to get a shower curtain after my new tub surround was put in (my old one had a door) and remembered seeing Moby Dick ones before and it went from there 😁 painted just a couple weekends ago and putting the finishing touches up now. 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Hehe, mine started with a wooden sperm whale decoration from Michaels, the arts and crafts store. The bathroom was already done in shades of blue from the previous owners and I liked it enough to keep it the same. 🐳❤️ 2y

You know social distancing and quarantining should be over when you start reading this for fun 😅

Ok ok, so I read this for a book club and I gutta say, it wasn‘t at all what I was expecting. There were some boring parts (unless you‘re into marine biology), but there were plenty of riveting dramatic moments, a lot more homo eroticism than I anticipated, and overall a huge amount of literary value that can be discussed for aaaagessss 🐋🌊🦿

This passage is an accurate representation of the book. So so so many details of details of details about whales. And yet, at 81% through the book, we have yet to see the actual great white whale. I‘m determined to finish, but I‘m ready for some action. I predict he will show up 10 pages from the end, there will be a big old battle, and everyone will die.

DGRachel I wish I understood the appeal. One of my American literature professors in college said “every student of literature owes it to themselves to read this”. She‘s a huge fan. It took me an entire summer to suffer through it. I hated her a little bit by the time I was done. 🤣🤣 2y
ScientistSam @Soubhiville that was my experience when first trying to read the book. I abandoned it when he started listing types of whales! And I have met one major fan of Moby Dick but that was years ago😂 2y
CorLie 1-a few years ago there was a Moby Dick read where famous people each read a chapter a day. It adds some variety. 2-someone told me to read it like a mid 2000s blog by a guy with a weird whale obsession. Sometimes he tells you interesting stories, but sometimes he just wants to talk about harpoons. It helps get through the draggier passages. 2y

And there is all the difference in the world between paying and being paid. The act of paying is perhaps the most uncomfortable infliction that the two orchard thieves entailed upon us. But being paid,— what will compare with it? The urbane activity with which a man receives money is really marvellous, considering that we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills, and that on no account can a monied man enter heaven. #mobydick
