#IdiomInsight
The idiom #StabInTheBack is a betrayal, an act of treachery, a demonstration of deceit in the face of trust, disloyalty. The verb phrase stab someone in the back means to betray someone or to be disloyal.
War often causes betrayals. This book has been in my #TBR for a while now. I have loved the author‘s other books but need to be in the right mood emotionally to read them as they usually are pretty gut wrenching.
This author has a habit of blowing me away with her awesomeness. That said, I really liked this but it wasn't epic and it didn't blow my mind. As it's YA, definitely not her target audience. Maybe it's because I lived through this time period and have friends from Romania.

2. She‘s a must read for me! Beautiful writer of historical fiction.
This was a 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ gut punch pick. Living in the West it seemed so simple; people in countries that moved into Communism after WW II rose up in the late 1980‘s and began to demand more freedoms. Of course it wasn‘t that easy. Cristian is 17, loves Romania, but is hungry, afraid and forced to spy on an American friend. As unrest unfolds in Romania, he learns the personal cost of protests against a despot.
“Guilt walks on all fours. It creeps, encircles, and climbs. It presses its thumbs to your throat. And it waits” -14
Soft pick; the writing style didn‘t seem to gel well with the subject, especially early in the book. I did enjoy it, though! ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75
What a fabulous book! Historical fiction about the 1989 Romanian Revolution told from the POV of Cristian, a 17-year-old blackmailed into being an informer. I was that age in 1989 and knew nothing about what Romanians were going through and how horrible things were under Ceausescu‘s dictatorship. This was so wonderfully done - I felt all the feelings!

Two YA historical fiction books both set in periods of history I don‘t know much about. IMBY was my favourite out of the two. Ruta Sepetys is a fast becoming a must read author for me.

#bookspin - for once read the book early in the month! 😊
Nicolae Ceaușescu certainly fits the corrupt power theme. Ruta Sepetys marvelous, heartbreaking novel shows us the what it was like to survive in the Romania when it was ruled by this tyrannical dictator.

Finishing up this one today. What will you be reading?
I was a young teen when the Romanian Revolution happened. I remembered bits and pieces but never knew what it was like for the Romanian people. An excellent fictional account of the horrors they lived through daily.
I loved this story. It was well written but also very sad. Its crazy knowing that you cant trust anyone.

Ruta Sepetys is a consummate researcher with mad writing skills. Here she has given us a novel that puts a human face on the horrors perpetrated under the Romanian Ceaușescu regime. Based on true stories. Christian Florescu, 17, yearns for a life free from oppression. Blackmailed into becoming an informer, his life spiraling out of control, Christian seeks allies that will help him reveal the truth. Set in the months before the regime‘s fall.
Very sad story about hardships of that period... Everything (story, ending) felt rushed, but informative, and eloquent.
Had to #reread this for Professional Reasons and damn, it does hold up. Cristian's frustration and bravery feel so real, and I'm also in love with Liliana Pavel. Shines a light on an era I can barely believe is history. #yalit #yahistoricalfiction
In 1980s Romania, you shouldn‘t fall in love, have friends, or expect loyalty from anyone. Trust no one. Someone is always watching. This gripping tale is set in Ceausescue‘s Romania. A place of long lines and minute betrayals. A slow start but an intense finish.
🎧Really love these books by Ruta Sepetys!❤️❤️❤️❤️
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was excellent! Hearing the Romanian words spoken helped put me in the story. I wasn‘t completely satisfied with the ending, but Cristian‘s story was compelling, and I learned a lot about life in Romania during this time. Would recommend, with the caveat that the last half contains some gore and violence that may be difficult for some. #2023 #aw80books
Historical fiction is in fact not a favorite genre of mine. One book club I‘m in, thoroughly enjoys them, so it forces me out of my comfort zone. I am always fascinated by what I learn and just how much history goes unnoticed. This happened 33 years ago and the totalitarian dictatorship carried on post the uprising. It is crazy to think how not long ago it was..I was just born! A heartbreaking, enlightening and moving story.
Im sorry I was so late in sending this but I got it in the mail over a week ago so hopefully it‘s made it okay by now. @kellyann28 @cwarnier @staci.reads
I enjoyed it. It‘s my first time reading the author and I have another one in my tbr pile 🖤
Diving in! Excited to start #auldlangspine a bit late! That‘s what I get for starting a chunkster on 12/24 🤣

Still working my way through Ink Black Heart but as soon as I‘m done moving onto the tagged book for #auldlangspine

I‘ve never met a Sepetys book I didn‘t love. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. Romania is under communist rule in 1989, and Cristian is left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.
There‘s not a single thing I would change about this book! It‘s clear Sepetys did extensive research on the time period. Additionally, Cristian was a phenomenal character! I loved the way Sepetys portrayed this fire inside him, driving him to change things and fight for freedom. Similarly, the themes in the novel were very strong, particularly the theme of paranoia. Finally, the emotional connection I felt with this book was unparalleled!
God, this is brutal and beautiful and enraging. How have I never heard of any of this?! I‘m still reeling from the disturbing torture and needless murder of so many. The absolute cruelty of those in charge is inhuman. I cannot comprehend how people could ever commit such atrocities on other people. I am so glad I know even a little about these events now. As usual, Ruta broke my heart. She is the queen of historical fiction! 🇷🇴
Trying something new with a bullet journal. #bookspinbingo Loving the audio to the tagged book! No one writes historical fiction like Ruta Sepetys. 🎧 24%

Ok ladies I finally finished this one up. I am sorry I have been in a huge reading funk recently and am behind.
Over all I don't think I would have picked this one up on my own, but I did enjoy it. I learned a lot about the Romanian Revolution & that time period. I was too young at the time to understand what was going on.
I promise I will get this sent off today or tomorrow.

Hey ladies, I just wanted to give you a heads up I am very far behind in reading and have not started this book.
Would you like me to send on unread or may I keep it a few extras weeks, which means we will be off a bit? I am cool either way.

Ok ladies, I just wanted to let you know that life has taken me by storm and I am so far behind in my reading journey.
I have not even begun to start I Must Betray You and probably won't get to start it till next week (if everything goes according to plan). I most likely won't have it done before October.

Honestly, after sitting on this one for a bit, my review can only be positive. At first, I was thinking, “Man, a lotta tell and no show.” But I think that‘s the point. No one in this novel could tell anyone anything. It‘s claustrophobic and you begin a mad spiral of distrust. I don‘t know much about this period in history (Romanian Revolution). Such a fascinating read. I will read this author again.
Ruta Sepetys writes a great YA historical fiction, this one set in Communist Romania right at the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. In this one, a teenager becomes an unwilling informant, and also begins to suspect that others in his life are as well.
“Fear arrived at five o‘clock.” 😱

Getting ready for September with the 3 rolls for books hanging out on my kindle. Hope to get at least the tagged book read.
I LOVED this one and read it so quickly! I'm now committed to reading the rest of Sepetys's backlog. The amount of research she does is next level amazing! I will mail this out on Monday! #LMPBC @staci.reads @cwarnier @allureofbeauty
Starting this one today! I loved your note Staci! Fun fact, in 1989 I was 1 year old 😂 #LMPBC

Another stellar read by Ruta Sepetys. If you haven't read her yet, what are you waiting for? She writes historical fiction about lesser known conflicts throughout Europe. This story is about life under Romanian dictatorship in the 1980s. It did not disappoint.
I love everything Ruta Sepetys writes.

It could be because I was just TEARING through this book, but I felt like some of the emotional beats shifted awfully quickly. It's probably how people actually felt under communism, tho, and I was 1000% invested regardless. Cristian and Liliana have my whole heart. #yalit #yahistoricalfiction
