These Precious Days | Ann Patchett
87 posts | 64 read | 44 to read
An irresistible collection of essays and memoir from the internationally bestselling, Women's Prize-winning author of The Dutch House 'Any story that starts will also end.' As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth as she explores family, friendship, marriage, failure, success, and what it all means. Ranging from the personal her portrait of the three men she called her fathers; unexpectedly falling into a life-changing friendship with Tom Hanks; how to answer when someone asks why you don't have children to the sublime exploring the Harvard Museum of Natural History before its doors open; the unexpected influence of Snoopy; the importance of knitting each essay transforms the particular into the universal, letting us all see our own worlds anew. Illuminating, penetrating, funny and generous, These Precious Days is joyful time spent in the company of one of our greatest living authors.

If you have an opportunity to read any of Ann‘s nonfiction, do. Even better read them on audio. There is so much soul, so much beauty in these essays and how she lovingly speaks of the people in her life. She perfects sentimentality without any trace of saccharine. She is a national treasure, and I will not accept debate about it. And if you‘re ever in Nashville, stop by Parnassus. So cozy. So well curated.

Frictionless: that's the word that comes to mind. Of course, she'll work her craft, just like every writer does, but the impression this essay collection gives is that when her fingers hit the keyboard Bach pours out.
Ann Patchett, I salute you!🙌

I loved these essays. After an interesting intro, her essay her "three fathers" sets a strong tone that lingers. Patchett's mother married three times, and Ann, had deep connections with all three of them, despite her mother's marriages being more-or-less unhappy. This collection also addresses her friendship with Tom Hanks, but mainly through her much deeper friendship with Hank's main assistant.
(Continued in the comments)

Graywacke Patchett is a curiously relaxed confident writer who either doesn't have many issues or doesn't share them. She does talk about herself and her experiences, good and bad, as a child, writing student, novelist, wife, semi-famous bookseller and friend. She is a thoroughly enjoyable writer of personal essays. And she reads these herself perfectly, imprinting the work with her actual voice and distinct pacing. 6mo

Wonderful essay collection, touching on love friendships, the pandemic family, and writing. I particularly enjoyed the ones about the influence of Snoopy and her friendship with Sooki Raphael.

I love Ann patchett and read these essays on the flight ✈️ home from Greece 🇬🇷 some of them were excellent some so -so & some slightly repetitive so not a huge pick for me but reasonably enjoyable. I found the no children here essays interesting 🤔 as being childless myself (not through choice ) & some of the outrageous things said to me over the years, funnily enough mostly by women not men !

Read it for my nonfiction book club last month.

A couple of essays I've found interesting (the one on book covers for example), but honestly, I couldn't care less for most of it... I've already forgotten most of them, they just didn't stick with me. A couple of ladies really liked this book, and found it very interesting, but it really wasn't the case for me.

I had Patchett confused with another author. I read several of her earlier works which I enjoyed and then lost track, thought she was someone else, & didn‘t read any more of her books. This book has brought me back to her. I loved this collection. Each chapter revealed so much about who she is & how she navigates her world. She was a delightful companion through several snowstorms & I may even download it again in a few months just to be with her.

Blaire It is a wonderful collection of essays. I also loved 13mo

In her essays, Patchett doesn‘t come off as a stylized or overtly impressive writer. I rarely found myself gasping over a particular turn of phrase or marveling at the way she found the exact right way to wrap-up a piece. Not every essay was a clear winner. Still, I loved her voice. It‘s smart, engaging, & sharp. I want to visit her bookstore & read more by her (I‘ve only done Commonwealth). I‘ve even taken up her “Buy Nothing Year” pledge (lite).

monalyisha Thanks for this, @JamieArc. It was a pleasure. 14mo
JamieArc Just curious: was this a print read or audio listen? I listened to the audio, read by Patchett herself, and I think that‘s what put it on my list. It felt like I was sitting with her as she told me stories about her life. 14mo
monalyisha @JamieArc I listened, too! She seems like she‘s a great friend and a person you‘d count yourself lucky to know. Her voice was strong! I did feel that some of the essays were simply too long. And I learned more about planes than I ever wanted to know. 😅 14mo

The following quote is from an essay of Patchett‘s, in which she talks about Eudora Welty‘s relationship with Mississippi. She could just as easily be talking about New Englanders!

“This is the world into which [Welty] repeatedly places her characters. They interact first with the landscape and then, if there‘s any energy left after that, with each other.”

What a lovely read. I read this slowly over the last couple weeks, just one or two essays a day, and it was the perfect way to read it (honestly, I wish I had even longer to really spread them out and savour them, but my book was due back!). These Precious Days was my first read from @BookNAround ‘s #AuldLangSpine list. I really enjoyed this, some of the essays resonated deeply for me. This one‘s title grabbed me. Losing my mom so suddenly in November has been a gut punch, after the numbness, knitting has recently been comforting me beyond measure. An essay where Ann finds joy in the loss of her dad also gave me pause, joy is possible. ❤️ A thought provoking kick off. @monalyisha

I loved this essay collection. It had a lot of insights into the book/publishing/Mfa world - how book covers are selected and the happenstance of assignments in the iowa writer‘s workshop…it also had a deep humanity as in the title story of her friendship with Tom Hanks assistant. through the whole book was infused with her gratefulness for her life her appreciation of luck and privilege, and the imperative not to take our days for granted.

I found I could closely predict her words. That‘s either a mark of authenticity or the mark of a writer who is smoothing her life into a … memoir. I‘m focused on the form factor because above all an essay has to be honest - from concept to purpose. These have the whiff of narrative. Which is ok - for a memoir. I once told my students when I finish a novel, I have to say goodbye to the characters. I rarely start a new book on the day I finish one.
I finished this book before bed & didn't sleep well; I was still thinking about Ann's ideas. Her writing, her honesty, her vulnerability resonate with me. I truly believe that if our paths were to cross somewhere in life we would be friends, but since they haven't I will settle for being a fan girl.

NovelNancyM “When someone claims they don't know how to cook, I find myself snapping, 'Do you know how to read?' Paying close attention to the text, and realizing that books can save you, those were the lessons I learned. ... Books were not just my education and my entertainment, they were my partners. They told me what I was capable of. They let me stare a long way down the paths of various possibilities so that I could make decisions“ (30-31). 2y

It turns out that having a hard wall to hit your tennis balls against is what gives them bounce. Having someone who believed in my failure more than my success kept me alert. It made me fierce. Without ever meaning to, my father taught me at a very early age to give up on the idea of approval.

So difficult to pick a favourite… they are all so warm, intelligent and witty…the one about being childless by choice, or about choosing her book covers, or being at grad school, or nearly flying to Vienna on a whim and of course the title essay was just ❤️💔.

squirrelbrain You‘d think people would stop criticising / asking rude questions in this day and age @vivastory, but no. 🙄 2y
Hooked_on_books @vivastory Isn‘t is ridiculous? I‘ve occasionally turned it around at people and asked them why they wanted children. They get very offended, but it doesn‘t click to them that I‘m asking them the same question they‘re asking me! I‘m old enough now that I don‘t get as much criticism anymore, but I always knew I didn‘t want to be a parent. It‘s a valid life choice. 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘m so glad you liked the book, Helen! I think it would be hard not to like, though I‘m sure that happens. She‘s so fabulous. 2y
squirrelbrain Me too @Hooked_on_books - it was never even really a ‘decision‘ for me, I just didn‘t have that gene or need or whatever you want to call it. People always told me I‘d change my mind once I got to thirty or thirty-five or whatever… I didn‘t! And now I‘m too old anyway, but I did get asked in a job interview, quite recently, why I‘d never had kids. 😳 @vivastory 2y
MicheleinPhilly @vivastory @Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I too never had that need or desire and it was amazing the reactions I would get when someone would ask. A. How is it any of your business? B. It IS a valid life choice. And it usually seemed to be strangers or casual acquaintances asking. And then they would say, “Well you never know. It could just happen.” Me: “I don‘t think so. My wife is good but she‘s not THAT good. 😈” 2y
squirrelbrain LOL - love that response @MicheleinPhilly ! 🤣 2y
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly It is 100% a life choice. The reactions were so strange-ranging from feeling personally attacked to a few people thinking that I had a vendetta against kids 😂 Your response is fantastic! 2y
vivastory @Hooked_on_books It is 100% a valid life choice. I thankfully don't have to deal with it very often anymore, although I think my aunt keeps holding out hope that at some point I'll change my mind 😂 2y
vivastory @squirrelbrain Wow, IMO that was really unprofessional of them to ask you that! The world would be so much better off if people just minded their own business. 2y
Megabooks This was a lovely collection. Glad you enjoyed it too! 2y

I have little connection to Ukraine as my father's parents left Kyiv for the US in the early 1900s. But still, there is an extra tug at my heartstrings aching for those caught in the current crisis. As I enjoy lunch and tea with one dear friend, savoring this book recommended by another, I bask in our good fortune and vow to cherish "these precious days." May you find opportunity to do the same if you are able. #bookandtea

kspenmoll So well said. My heart goes out to you & yours.💕 2y

Pickpick

Unsurprisingly, Ann Patchett‘s collection of personal essays is just marvelous. There‘s not a dud in the bunch, though my favorites where her essay about being childless by choice (and all the lovely reactions one gets from others) and the one about how book covers come to be, or have for her. She‘s unapologetic and even a little brusque at times and I love it. Plus now I really want to see the pack of dogs in her bookstore!

Bookzombie I enjoyed all of these but the childless by choice essay was great! 2y
Hooked_on_books @Bookzombie I really related to it! I‘ve fielded so many of the same ridiculous responses (and always wondered why people who don‘t even know me would care so much about my life decisions—it‘s bizarre). 2y
squirrelbrain Sounds great - especially that particular ‘childless by choice‘ essay - stacked. 2y

squirrelbrain Just found it on Libby so thanks! (6 week wait though…) 2y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I had to wait a bit for it as well. It was worth it! 2y
Librariana You piqued my interest with your mention of the childless by choice essay as I often feel on the defensive when it comes to people questioning my choice. I'll definitely have to add myself to my library's HOLDS queue 😊 2y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana it‘s a terrific read and I really related to that essay! Hopefully you will, too. I don‘t get it from people so much anymore, but man are people judgmental (especially to women) for not having children. And I know there are childless women who wanted kids but it didn‘t happen and how painful must those judgments be for those women? 2y
