Best. State. Ever.: A Florida Man Defends His Homeland
Best. State. Ever.: A Florida Man Defends His Homeland | Dave Barry
A brilliantly funny exploration of the Sunshine State from the man who knows it best: Pulitzer Prize winner and "New York Times" bestselling author Dave Barry. We never know what will happen next in Florida. We know only that, any minute now, something will. Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from some media person wanting to know, What the hell is wrong with Florida? Somehow, the state s acquired an image as a subtropical festival of stupid, and as a loyal Floridian, Dave begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. And people seem to take their pants off for no good reason. And it has flying insects the size of LeBron James. But it is a great state, and Dave is going to tell you why. Join him as he celebrates Florida from Key West at the bottom to whatever it is that s at the top, from the Sunshine State s earliest history to the fun-fair of weirdness that it is today. It s the most hilarious book yet from the funniest damn writer in the whole country (Carl Hiaasen, and he should know). By the end, you ll have to admit that whatever else you might think about Florida you can never say it s boring."

Happy Boxing Day. Premier League and Dave Barry make for a great morning. I‘m going to be in soccer/football overload for the next week. This fun, easy read is an excellent accompaniment.

Book gifts from hubby. It‘s been a fun Christmas morning. We have a tradition of writing clues on gift tags, and the recipient has to try and guess what it is. Hubby handed me two geology/paleontology books to use as references to help me deal with the clues he‘d devised. I‘ve never laughed so hard😂

Eggs He‘s a keeper❣️ 4w
Smrloomis That‘s a lovely tradition 😁 I like the idea of having to guess! 4w
Lynnsoprano @Eggs That he is! 48 years on Saturday ❤️ 4w
Lynnsoprano @Smrloomis It‘s incredibly fun. My dad started it with clues for my mom, and it just kind of mushroomed. 4w

Let‘s see about this. He does make some good points about the gubernatorial seat to prison pipeline they have going on in Illinois so far. #ebook

DGRachel I miss Dave Barry columns in the paper (I don‘t live in Florida anymore). I may have to grab this book for when I‘m feeling homesick. 😉 2y
Reggie 4 out of the last 7. Rachel Maddow talked about it on her radio show one time. She mentioned the one that got started when a family of six got blown up in their vehicle because the guy whose part fell off his truck that started that explosion had bought his cdl license and had no business driving that truck. Turns out there was a huge license racket going on and it turned out to be one of the governors was in on it before he became governor. (edited) 2y
saguarosally @Reggie I remember that one. Let‘s see what happens with Bruce Rauner. 2y
saguarosally @DGRachel The columns are online aren‘t they? 2y

I have a fondness for Florida; my husband & I got married there and our son was born there. We vacation there now. So this book, by a writer who also clearly loves Florida and makes gentle fun of it as well, was a pleasure for me. I learned about some FL attractions we have to go see, such as Cassadega, the town full of mediums and psychics.

I apologize for yelling. I AM TIRED OF MY LIBRARY ONLY HAVING BOOKS IN CD FORMAT. (I am Veruca Salt and I want what I want and I want it now.)

8little_paws You mean they don't have digital audiobooks? 3y
Donna_sBookMinute 😕none of them are signed up with Hoopla or Overdrive? I still see CDs at my libraries. But they also offer the digital services. Check the information desk. 3y
Laura317 And thought my library was backwoods with no Hoopla account!! 3y

Sace @8little_paws and @Donna_sBookMinute and @Laura317 oh they have overdrive and Hoopla but I rarely find newer releases there. Most of the new releases I find are on CD. In fact they only got Hoopla in the last year. I really don't get it. One day I need to quit being lazy and talk to someone. 3y
jpmcwisemorgan I really want to know why this is happening. 3y
Reviewsbylola That's annoying. I feel like whenever I search certain books on hoopla they only have it in audio and it irritates me as well! 3y
Sace @jpmcwisemorgan 😂😂😂 Me too. That's why I'm eventually going to do something about it. 3y
Sace @Reviewsbylola Me too!!! I am starting to enjoy audiobooks, but sometimes I want to actually read. 3y
ReadingEnvy Tell them!!! 3y
Jess_Read_This Preach... my library's Overdrive account is quite similar. The CD selection unreal but let's not invest in technology or better app selections. 3y
Sace @ReadingEnvy I will!... Eventually! 😊 3y
Sace @Jess_Read_This oh! Oh! It gets worse! They made their long range goals available online and integrating and updating technology is one of them. I'm pretty sure the document was a year or two old so I'm trying to cut them slack. But when it's a book from last year and all you have is CDs? And I need to let them know that the mobile site catalog search is a broken link to a New Hampshire library. Whaaaa? 3y
Jess_Read_This @Sace 😣😣That is just plain wrong. 3y
Lmstraubie Sooooo frustrating!!!! 3y
Donna_sBookMinute Is there a neighboring county with a better system? Hopefully it's not too far. 3y
KathyWheeler Library funding is a huge problem and with large numbers of people believing that libraries are irrelevant, and an administration hellbent on cutting federal funding for libraries, plus a population unwilling to pay taxes to support libraries, these kind of problems are only going to get worse. 3y
Sace @KathyWheeler Agree. And it's depressing as all get out. Now I confess that I do not use my library as much as I should, but I donate money and time and I am perfectly happy with my taxes being used for that purpose. 3y

Sure much of the humor read like an endless stream of dad jokes, but it was a fast, funny, and easy read. Here is Buster, in the background, wondering why I am not doing better things with my time, like cuddling him. #pugsoflitsy #dogsoflitsy

Sace I have to read this! Peeping Buster is precious. 3y

This is a light, frothy, funny frolic through Florida with the very capable Dave Barry. He can have his state, but I enjoyed hearing about the Skunk Ape (the Florida bigfoot), alligators, retirement communities, and Spongeorama. A quick diversion.

You think your state is weird? Dave Barry shows us why Florida takes the cake. Do you have a skunk ape as pictured? Florida does. How about a million gator parks. Again Florida. A museum devoted to sponges. Yup. Florida for the win. I laughed out loud repeatedly through this book. He always finds the funny along with the heart of the people he talks to. Highly recommend for those in need of a good chuckle.
