Novella told from the perspective of Buck, a family dog who is dog napped and forced to #hitthenorth as a sled dog in the Yukon Territory at the turn of the 20th century. I think London anthropomorphized Buck‘s motivation too much at times but it was otherwise a pretty compelling adventure that doesn‘t shy away from the brutality of the era.

August was a good month! Three of these were rereads: Medium Raw, One Flew Over the Cuckoo‘s Nest, and my only 5-star for the month, The Call of the Wild.

LauraBeth I read The Call Of The Wild and White Fang for Lit in college and loved it so much! I‘ve been wanting to re-visit them and haven‘t done it yet. I credit London with re-igniting my love of reading during a time when all I was reading were textbooks. 2mo

I enjoyed this but at times was very put off by the treatment of the dogs. Getting beyond that the story had a great message and was very interesting being told by the dog‘s point of view. I know Max would 100% not make it in the wild lol. 4 🐶🐶🐶🐶

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reread | During the Klondike Gold Rush, Buck, a St. Bernard mix, was stolen from his California home and sold as a sled dog in Alaska. He‘s then sold several times over enduring many hardships and earning his role of alpha. In this fable-like tale of survival, Buck goes steadily from domesticated to feral. London allegorically permits Buck to exhibit human-like thinking. Dogs and humans could easily be interchanged. It‘s brilliant.

DO NOT go into this book thinking it‘s a heart-warming tale about a puppy who goes camping. Every page has dogs attacking humans, humans attacking dogs, dogs attacking each other… wah! I know there are a lot of clever metaphors and allegories buried in the story, and the place writing is beautiful, but that‘s no comfort to a dog-lover. Thankfully, it‘s short! Book #41: When you think about one of Jack London's Alaskan dog books, you would likely think about White Fang, I assume due to the popularity of the movie a few years ago. However, before White Fang was published, London published the much shorter The Call of the Wild. To start off I must say that this book was fantastic and I highly recommend...

Definitely thankful for this book this Thanksgiving! I couldn‘t have asked for a better atmosphere to finish reading The Call of the Wild by Jack London other than Alaska itself. This morning at 7am I sat outside in the New Mexico mountains.. as I started the last chapter I was surrounded by dogs howling.. it was as if those dogs could hear the same wild call that Buck heard and eventually embraced..
review continues in comments⚠️

BookBumming This is a 5 star read!! I had so many emotions going through this book. But I truly didn‘t want to say goodbye to Buck. He reminds me so much of all the dogs I‘ve had in my life.. As different as they all are from each other, they all are connected by an ancient and wild bond.

Day 25 - #booksinthewild #31bookpics

I enjoyed the story very much. I can't believe I never read this before. I loved Jack London's intuitive feeling for animals. This story traces Buck's sudden entry into the wild and his education in survival among the wolves. Jack London's writing is exceptional and makes him one of the greatest American storytellers. If you haven't read this yet, you should as it is a quick, easy and thrilling read.

The main character of this novel is a dog named Buck. The story starts at a ranch in California, where Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes feral in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs.

He ends up relying on primordial instinct and learning how to survive and through these experiences emerges as a leader in the wild.

I‘m glad I never read this to my kids. Besides the themes of violence, misogyny and racism, the writing is just bad. Repetitive as a picture book, it had none of the charm or humor. I try to judge books based on the author‘s era and can forgive outmoded attitudes if the prose is beautiful and there are other values to be gained, but I found no such compensations here. #unpopularipinion #GAR #hopeitdoesntwin

Graywacke Read this in high school, and have no memory of prose. I definitely didn‘t note the misogyny and racism. (And probably found the violence fascinating). Mostly I remember thinking it was a cool story about a smart dog. Ha! 1y
