Life, the Universe and Everything
Life, the Universe and Everything | Douglas Adams
"HYSTERICAL!"--The Philadelphia InquirerThe unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads--so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the white killer robots of Krikkit and their goal of total annihilation. They are Arthur Dent, a mild-mannered space and time traveler, who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and missing; Ford Prefect, his best friend, who decides to go insane to see if he likes it; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vicepresident of the Campaign for Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behavior; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-head honcho of the Universe; and Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God and a very depressed Beeblebrox. How will it all end? Will it end? Only this stalwart crew knows as they try to avert "universal" Armageddon and save life as we know it--and don't know it!"ADAMS IS ONE OF THOSE RARE TREASURES: an author who, one senses, has as much fun writing as one has reading."--The Arizona Daily StarFrom the Paperback edition.

Although I had a rocky relationship with the first third of this third book in a five book trilogy, the second and third thirds were smoother and less jarring. I still could have done without "bistromathics", but felt Arthur was well-handled, and his character somewhat developed beyond "clueless tea-deficient ape descendant". Trillian was underused, but less so than in the previous books. All in all, I didn't stray too far from interested: 4?

Faith and perseverance rewarded - after about 60 pages of feeling "meh", the story starts to coalesce into some sort of oxymoronic vague-coherence and I'm engaged in the following 40 pages. Half way through, so let's hope Adams stays on track for the remainder! ☹?☹

I read the trilogy back in the '80s, off the back of the radio and TV shows. Rereading them now, I'm reliving how much I loved Hitchhiker and Restaurant, and how LtUaE felt like shtick. Much of the joy of reading Adams is his subversion of the reader's expectation for how a sentence should end, based on how it started. Having got used to that again, I'm feeling a bit meh about this. I'll keep going, though, Adams deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Arthur Dent and his companions try to avoid total annihilation once again after the inhabitants on planet Krikkit decide to blow up the universe! Some funny bits in this third volume of Hitchhiker‘s.

In this 3rd Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book, Trillian saves all of existence. Granted, she's not in it very much. The vast majority of this one is Arthur, Ford, and Slartibartfast hilariously failing to save existence over and over again.

Also an Italian bistro/starship! Arthur learns to fly! And an ill-fated bowl of petunias makes a surprising reappearance!

A blast to revisit! Martin Freeman does a fantastic job narrating on audio.

These books are written in a particular disinterested style that is uniquely appropriate for the content. Few books can be as unabashedly ridiculous and slightly cliche and get away with it like Adams'. I can't tell if it's the author's failing or success, but regardless, in this series it works really well. It's kind of the cornerstone of entertainment for the Hitchhiker's Guide.

“I wasn‘t talking about my #towel…We‘ve established that it isn‘t mine. It‘s just that the bag into which I was putting the towel which is not mine is also not mine, though it is extraordinarily similar. Now personally I think that is extremely odd, especially as the bag was one I made myself on prehistoric Earth. These are also not my stones…I was making a collection of interesting stones and these are clearly very dull ones.” #QuotsyMay18

My fiancee's birthday gift finally showed up today. It's the illustrated folio edition of LtUaE. He's a HUGE fan of The Guide and now has 3/5 of these particular volumes. They're so pretty and the covers are glittery. The illustrations are great too.

The third book of the series is as fun as the first two. Very witty, very silly and very English. Arthur Dent truly is what your average Brit would be like if thrown into space surrounded by Aliens. Douglas' style was so unique, his writing instantly recognisable. An easy hilarious read. I had a smile on my face from start to finish.

Returning to this brilliant series. I read the first two, really enjoyed them and then stopped for some bizarre reason. Now three years later after reading the first chapter I'm wondering - why did I wait so long? Should be a fun read for over Christmas.

Douglas Adam's wit and observation is superb - but I found the humor about fatigue, indifference and a nation of very nice people who would set to destroy the universe because it was DIFFERENT from what they have known, just hit a bit too close to home to be funny. 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It is probably my fault.
