You Had Me at Hola
You Had Me at Hola: A Novel | Alexis Daria
"Soapy, smart and so sexy... with vibrant characters and electric chemistry comparable to the telenovelas that inspired it, youll be thrilled You Had Me At Hola doesnt come with commercials!"--Sarah MacLean, New York Times bestselling author RITA Award Winning author Alexis Daria brings readers an unforgettable, hilarious rom-com set in the drama-filled world of telenovelasperfect for fans of Jane the Virgin and The Kiss Quotient. Leading Ladies do not end up on tabloid covers. After a messy public breakup, soap opera darling Jasmine Lin Rodriguez finds her face splashed across the tabloids. When she returns to her hometown of New York City to film the starring role in a bilingual romantic comedy for the number one streaming service in the country, Jasmine figures her new Leading Lady Plan should be easy enough to followuntil a casting shake-up pairs her with telenovela hunk Ashton Surez. Leading Ladies dont need a man to be happy. After his last telenovela character was killed off, Ashton is worried his career is dead as well. Joining this new cast as a last-minute addition will give him the chance to show off his acting chops to American audiences and ping the radar of Hollywood casting agents. To make it work, hell need to generate smoking-hot on-screen chemistry with Jasmine. Easier said than done, especially when a disastrous first impression smothers the embers of whatever sexual heat they might have had. Leading Ladies do not rebound with their new costars. With their careers on the line, Jasmine and Ashton agree to rehearse in private. But rehearsal leads to kissing, and kissing leads to a behind-the-scenes romance worthy of a soap opera. While their on-screen performance improves, the media spotlight on Jasmine soon threatens to destroy her new image and expose Ashtons most closely guarded secret.

Characters were likable but at some point Jasmine felt a bit immature and at the same time I was irritated by Ashton's age crisis - he was just couple years older than Jasmine after all.

This was as fun as I thought this would be - really cozy and made me feel good.

Romance wasn't developed really well and I didn't relate to it. There was also unnecessary drama and it took too long to get over.

A great drama filled rom-com read. After a messy break up, TV sweetheart Jasmine Lin finds her latest escapades splashed over the tabloids. She returns home to New York to star in a New Romantic comedy series, enter her co-star, Ashton Suárez. A disastrous first meeting with each other makes them nervous for the series and their careers.
Following their private lives and ‘public eye‘ lives, it‘s easy to see why people leave the world of fame.

📚📚📚 Slow slightly dull romance w/2 daytime actors. This should‘ve been cool Latino rep but instead it read like a diversity check-off list with a bit of a story thrown in. 🌶️ on the spice scale. Probably moving it to my Older Readers cabinet in the classroom with the CoHo books

Low pick. It reminded me of Guillory‘s While We Were Dating, with the roles reversed, and that wasn‘t a great read for me. Also, I wasn‘t initially a fan of the interspersed chapters of script, but eventually it worked. I like that both characters have some issues to work through (though the epilogue was a bit too pat) and they each have a good support system. Love the Primas of Power and getting a chance to practice my español.

Latinx romance novel. Fun read. Chapters usually alternate between the “real” story and script for the show the MCs are filming (the MCs are actors on a Latinx romcom streaming series). Extra points for having characters deal with their trauma and behavioral problems in therapy.

I liked the Latinx representation, the sprinkling of Spanish throughout, and the cover… but otherwise, this romance wasn‘t for me. It seemed shallow and just dragged on. 🎧

Sweet and entertaining love story about soap opera stars navigating a new show, tabloid drama, and romance. Loved the writing, characters, and Latinx representation. The storyline was a little cheesy and certain minor confrontations were dragged out a little too far. Other than that, it was a fun read!

I totally understand all the hype! Smart, soapy and sexy, this steamy romance takes you behind the scenes of a Latinx television drama (think telenovela) as the two stars fall in love. Full of family and fun, I can‘t wait for the next one from Daria. So good! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

My first official adult romance novel. It was good. Sweet and sexy. I enjoyed the family dynamics, and the character growing up in the Bronx and being of Puerto Rican descent was nice because I can relate to that. That's pretty rare for me.

Just finished my #DoubleSpin book before a new month of #BookSpinBingo. Loved the diverse Latinx characters, telenovela setting and strong family bonds-especially between Jasmine and her cousins. The on-set intimacy coordinator was hilarious! Good thing author Daria kept sneaking into her mom‘s rom-com collection for a steamy read when she was young. It paid off!

⭐️⭐️ The diverse Latinx cast was great, but Daria‘s execution was very surface-level, and the story fell a touch flat. It‘s cheesy and predictable like many rom-coms, but I didn‘t care for the gimmicky tv script bits. Thankfully, the extended family members added some welcomed comic relief as I found Ashton to be a total stick in the mud and Jasmine shallow and annoying. Their chemistry was off. Idk. Total #coverlove, though!

Cinfhen The title is fabulous but Im honestly not drawn to this one... thanks for the honest review 💚💚 2y

This book was so good! Great recommendation Rachel! I have a hard time with contemporary romances, but not when they‘re well written. This one was. I loved both characters and loved that they were actors filming a show together. There was some Spanish phrases that I didn‘t understand but that was to be expected. I also listened on audio, so I didn‘t look them up.

This romance is absolutely adorable. Both Jasmine & Ashton are charming & lovable characters. Admittedly, they both seemed a bit naïve & insecure for seasoned actors, but their perspectives were still understandable & the way they learned to trust each other was sweet. I also really appreciated the emphasis on family issues & the recognition of how important representation & respect are in Latin American communities. Delightful!

New mom sleeplessness makes it hard to connect with books sometimes. I read a lot while nursing & being up at random hours, but it can take me longer to engage with or process what I've read. Most of this group of books made it easier though! Even if I wasn't 100% about them, I found a silver lining or something to think about - including some of the things I've been pondering regarding writing! I‘m not really a love-at-first-sight fan, & that‘s what this felt like. I really liked the characters as individuals — Jasmine‘s struggles with self-esteem were really relatable, & Ashton‘s scenes with his son were heart-melting. I just couldn‘t feel them together as a couple. The writing was also a bit sluggish — hardly any feisty banter or witty narration, lots of explanations on thought processes, etc. OK romance, not much comedy. ★★★☆☆.

There was too much smut in this one to be a 5 star, but I really liked the characters and the plot. Their relationship seemed genuine, and it's always fun when the story follows famous people

This was advertised as being for people who like Jane the Virgin and Ugly Betty. So, I expected campy fun. This seems more like a bodice ripper whose only resemblance to the aforementioned shows is that it features Latinx characters. What a disappointment! Bailed at 56%.

Another chapter, another graphic sex scene 🙄 I am okay with some sex scenes, but y'all - this is A LOT. I like the characters and the plot, but this makes me want to put the book aside! Does anyone else want the plot to stay more important than the sexy time in a romance novel?

QuietlyLaura Definitely need plot! Sexy times should enhance the plot. Like sprinkling pepper on a meal: just enough adds to the meal but too much makes it inedible. ☺️ 3y
rjsthumbelina @QuietlyLaura exactly! Thankfully, now we seem to have returned to a plot. (I'm up to chapter 26 now.) Gotta get to the breaking point of the plot I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like this part much better 3y
MsMelissa This is pretty much why I don‘t read romance novels. 3y
See All 13 Comments
rjsthumbelina @Book_Fiend_Melissa I have read some really good ones where the romance is there and there's maybe one or two short sex scenes, but they don't eclipse the plot entirely. To be fair, this one has only had 3 smut scenes so far, they just went on too long in my opinion and we're back to back to back! I do think the plot and characters are very strong here though 3y
rjsthumbelina @Book_Fiend_Melissa I'll tag some below that have really engaging plots 3y
rjsthumbelina If you don't mind YA 3y
MsMelissa I have read Beach Read and really enjoyed it. I have Party of Two, but am a little reluctant to read it after reading The Wedding Date, which I thought was too light on plot and to heavy on the sex scenes. I enjoy a good love story, but I can do without sex scenes. I more of a ‘I know what‘s going on, but don‘t need it described in detail‘ reader when it comes to romance. Has just never been something I‘m interested in reading. 3y
MsMelissa Basically, any book praised for its ‘sexy times‘ or ‘hotness‘ is a book I‘ll avoid 🤣 3y
rjsthumbelina @Book_Fiend_Melissa lol! I'm that way too. I really liked Party of Two. There were a few sex scenes that were kind of detailed, but I wouldn't say that it took up a majority of the plot. And I really liked the plot a lot! 3y
rjsthumbelina @Book_Fiend_Melissa and it sounds like you would enjoy Today tonight tomorrow. I thought I would hate it, but it was a lot of fun! And I loved the characters 3y
MsMelissa I will give Party of Two a chance 😊 Also the YA book does sound like something I might enjoy, too. Thank you! 3y

rjsthumbelina @Reggie yeah, it happens right after the first time, when they don't have sex. He masturbates in shower thinking about it. With more detail than anyone would ever need.lol. the worst part had to have been when it described him 'caressing his balls'... Yuck! 3y
