The Good Girl
The Good Girl | Mary Kubica
"I've been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she works. I don't know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she's scared. But I will." One night, Mia Dennett enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. At first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life. When Colin decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota instead of delivering her to his employers, Mia's mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them. But no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter.  An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a propulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems.  "Kubica's powerful debut…will encourage comparisons to Gone Girl." —Publishers Weekly, starred reviewLook for Pretty Baby, the next sensational novel by Mary Kubica. Listening to this one at work. This is the first audiobook ive listened to that has more than one person reading. Its kind of hard to get used to!

I blew through this quickly and did like the way the author utilized time shifts and different POVs (tho the detective parts were meh), but overall I found this lackluster and trite. The “twist” was predictable if you‘ve read even a few thrillers or watched a few cop shows. And there was a lot that still made no sense even once we got that reveal. Also, a pet peeve of mine: much of the dialogue sounds nothing like how people actually talk. 2/5 ⭐️

Megabooks She is one of the few authors whose writing I just can‘t stand. (edited) 1mo
alisonrose @Megabooks I‘ve read one other book of hers and it was okay, but yeah. She relies too heavily on metaphors that don‘t even fit and has her characters speak in prose rather than normal human dialogue 1mo
8little_paws @alisonrose @megabooks also, to be blunt, she's racist. The bad guy here she kept commenting on how dark he was. 1mo
See All 8 Comments
alisonrose @8little_paws YES. That really bugged me, how often she mentioned his skin color, and how the detective kept talking about how many POC lived in a certain place and such. 1mo
Megabooks @8little_paws I read Don‘t You Cry and Pretty Baby. Those were enough to turn me off! I haven‘t read this one. Honestly, it doesn‘t surprise me that she did this. Plus, using “dark” as a descriptor rather than “black” or “Latino” I‘m sure makes some people feel like they‘re less racist. 🙄😤 1mo
alisonrose @Megabooks Yeah, although she also compared his skin to like, whale blubber or something???? Like what white nonsense is that? 1mo
8little_paws Yes that's right she tied race and poverty together closely. I read this like 4 years ago and still cannot get over how many people gave her racial comments a pass 1mo
alisonrose @8little_paws Seriously. After this one I‘m not interested in reading more from her. 😒 1mo

You know how sometimes you read a line in a book and you just get the feeling it‘s the author speaking through their character? I could be wrong, and I hope I am, because this is some anti-choice bullshit, the definitive statement that of course she will feel nothing but guilt “for the rest of her life.” What next, is she gonna insist that getting an abortion will also give her cancer? 😠😠😠

suzisteffen 😡😡😡 yuck no! Ugh. 1mo

We get about twenty cans. Chicken noodle, tomato soup, mandarin oranges, cream corn. The kind of food you find in a survival kit. The girl realizes this and says, “Maybe you don‘t plan to kill me right away,” and I say no, not until we‘ve eaten the cream corn.

[Okay, that made me snicker.]

I really have liked Mary kubica‘s novels as there are twists and turns along the way and this was no exception. The story line was good, the characters were likable, I just found it a little lackluster. A good story, easy reading.

50% through the good girl now. I do this all the time with books that when I first start reading them I feel like I‘m not digging it and probably won‘t get into it however over the last couple of days I‘ve found myself picking up the kindle every spare second that I have to read some more of this story. Really enjoying at the moment! 👍🏻

I read many reviews that mentioned the plot and storyline was predictable but I don‘t agree. Sure there were bits and pieces that I saw coming but that Epilogue 😲👏🏻🙌🏻 well done Mary, well done, that one I did NOT see coming even a little bit. I can‘t wait to read more from this author!

I was not a huge fan of the way this book was organized. You find out the end result really early on, and then the rest of the book is filling in the details from the middle. Overall, it was a good book. A story about a young woman that is abducted, The Good Girl is told from three different perspectives, the kidnapper, the victim‘s mother, and the detective in charge of the case.

Another one that was better than I thought it would be. Before I finished the book I had the thought that the sort-of love story was a bit problematic since the guy kidnapped her but then I got to the end and...twist! The back and forth point of views of the main characters, both before and after the kidnapping was quite entertaining. My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I‘m still trying to wrap my head around the ending, I did not see that coming! It kept me hooked from the first page and although the characters were not likeable at first the author does an amazing job of developing them so they are longer the front they have created in their elite world.

This book just didn‘t do it for me. I had tried reading it a few years ago and bailed so I tried the audio this time (because I always hear people rave about this author).
I didn‘t like the characters much (any of them) and I did see the ending coming..even if it really didn‘t make much sense.

And The Not So Good Girl

I was hooked from page one, it begged me to turn the page, and it left me with a lot of questions as I did so. I can‘t ask for much more than that in a suspense. I did guess the twist halfway through the book but it was still a fun read.

I also enjoyed The Not So Good Girl, although she tried to bite me several times as we attempted to take this picture.

I like this book so far but I have noticed a few things that have made me question the editing. These lines are both referring to the exact same man and occur only within a few pages of each other.

Jilly6183 Is it possible that's it's meant to be a contrast? In other words, this person usually engages in small talk and beats around the bush, but in this situation he is unexpectedly direct, which is why the narrator is fascinated? 8mo
Butterflyamore @Jilly6183 I do not think so. It doesn‘t come across that way at all. 8mo
Butterflyamore @Jilly6183 I see where you are coming from now. I had to look at this several times in an effort to see the potential for contrast. I don‘t think it is as clear as it could/should be but you might be right. 8mo

Mary Kubica is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This is the 2nd book of hers that I have read. It is a twisty roller coaster that hooks you from the beginning and does not let go. The ending was a total surprise that smacks you in the face unexpectedly. I will be reading Pretty Baby next as I feel a Kubica binge coming on that will put a hold on my TBR. Sidetracked seems to be my middle name!

I enjoyed listening to this story with all the different people reading each character. I was drawn into the storyline, hearing about the "before" and "after", slowly learning about the mystery. However, I was shocked by the epilogue. It was such a fantastic way to end the novel and was honestly the best chapter of the entire novel.

I found it easy to follow. It was a bit slow-moving at times, but I was still fascinated with what was happening. In my opinion, I thought the author did a very good job of keeping me “on board” with what was going on (as I try to describe it without giving too much away!). The twist at the very end – impressive. If I was one to reread, I would definitely reread and look for potential clues! I did reread the epilogue

This was an enjoyable audiobook. The back and forth through present and past made more sense than I expected it to and the story over all left me feeling completely shattered for the characters. I knew there was no chance for a happy ending because of the way it was told but I still hoped somehow there would be one. The characters were definitely gray and compelling and I didn't know who I wanted to root for half the time.

Nggak nyangka bakal suka dengan alur maju mundurnya. Saya orang yang cenderung menyukai alur maju dalam semua kisah. Waktu tahu novel dimulai dengan bagian akhir cerita, biasanya langsung tutup buku. Tapi tidak dengan The Good Girl. Mary Kubica memenggal jalan cerita di tempat-tempat yang pas, bahkan akhir ceritanya pun jauh diluar dugaan.
