To Have and to Hoax
To Have and to Hoax: A Novel | Martha Waters
In this fresh and hilarious historical rom-com, an estranged husband and wife in Regency England feign accidents and illness in an attempt to gain attentionand maybe just win each other back in the process. Five years ago, Lady Violet Grey and Lord James Audley met, fell in love, and got married. Four years ago, they had a fight to end all fights, and have barely spoken since. Their once-passionate love match has been reduced to one of cold, detached politeness. But when Violet receives a letter that James has been thrown from his horse and rendered unconscious at their country estate, she races to be by his sideonly to discover him alive and well at a tavern, and completely unaware of her concern. Shes outraged. Hes confused. And the distance between them has never been more apparent. Wanting to teach her estranged husband a lesson, Violet decides to feign an illness of her own. James quickly sees through it, but he decides to play along in an ever-escalating game of manipulation, featuring actors masquerading as doctors, threats of Swiss sanitariums, faux mistressesand a lot of flirtation between a husband and wife who might not hate each other as much as they thought. Will the two be able to overcome four years of hurt or will they continue to deny the spark between them? With charm, wit, and heart in spades, To Have and to Hoax is a fresh and eminently entertaining romantic comedyperfect for fans of Jasmine Guillory and Julia Quinn.

This first book in #TheRegencyVowsSeries makes for a quick and entertaining listen! While Violet & James had a love match marriage that was the talk of the ton, their wedded bliss ended after a year by a terrible fight. Since they‘ve been cold, civil & more or less estranged. While the 4-year timeline is hard to swallow when it quickly becomes apparent how much they still love each other, as they scheme their way back together, I enjoyed the ride!

Currently listening to this.. enjoying it. I don't believe I have read any regency books before but have watched Bridgerton. Is all regency books just about courting/marrying off ur daughters... then getting pushed at for when they will make an heir... and finding out who is sleeping with who? Anyways. I like the bickering the main characters have been doing.

P.S. I dont care for the male narrator. I think they are doing that voice for the role.

The basis of this book is a miscommunication trope, which I‘m not the biggest fan of, but I liked the characters and the chemistry between them. I also had just watched pride and prejudice before reading this so I was in the mood for a regency romance.

Characters had their childlish game going on with each other and even though these books can sometimes be a bit absurd they still manage to be funny. Well. Let me introduce an exception. This wasn't even funny! There were really interesting secondary characters.

This had many balls and travelling by carriages so there was a historical atmosphere which was a positive thing.

Yes it‘s 81°F today but I have my fall decorations up.

I‘m sorry, I don‘t pan a lot of books, but I did not like this one. I didn‘t like their banter but definitely thought they were perfect for each other.

The writing was super repetitive and could have been 50 pages shorter. Like yes I understand they married young and he was only 28 years old ?

And I‘ve already apologized in advance for my snarky comments.

This was a really soft pick for me
I loved the concept and some of the secondary characters, but the MCs drove me absolutely batty with their inability to have a conversation like adults. Issues that can be solved by literally ONE conversation lead to making everything else in the story feel contrived. There were definitely some funny moments, but the execution was quite uneven.

TheAromaofBooks #LMPBC friends @Bianca @Laughterhp @Allylu - I'll admit that a lot of my notes are just me complaining about these two not talking to each other 😂 Do you still want to do this book, or would you rather have been choose a different one from my list? I think The Summer House by Jenny Hale & A Sweet Mess by Jayci Lee were of interest as well. I'm fine with trying a different book, also fine with sending this one on since you all may enjoy it ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) more than me, or you may enjoy griping about it in the margins as well! 😆 Let me know what you all think!!! 3y
Laughterhp I‘m okay reading this one, even though it sounds like it‘ll be frustrating. Sometimes it‘s more fun bitching 😆 but whatever the majority wants to do is fine with me. 3y

CarolynM I started this one a while ago but couldn't really get into it. I don't think I'll bother trying again. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @Allylu @Bianca - Okay, I think I'm going to go ahead and send this one, but everyone should feel free to put their real feelings and honestly DNF it if it really gets on your nerves. 😂 Because there were parts that I really did find entertaining & I loved the concept so it's possible that I was just in A Mood when I was reading this & the rest of you will love it! 😆 3y

GingerAntics Do you have a sock coming off both ends of those knitting needles?! 🤯 I can‘t even fathom how that is working out. Won‘t they be attached? 3y
Lindy @GingerAntics Two separate balls of yarn. 3y
Lindy Your socks look awesome! Glad to hear you‘re doing two at a time. 👏👏👏 3y
GingerAntics OOOOOOOH!!! That makes so much sense now. That‘s cool. 3y
julesG @Alfoster @RaeLovesToRead @Tamra @BethM Thank you! @Lindy @GingerAntics Thanks! It's actually only one ball of yarn. I use both ends. (I'll take another picture) 3y
GingerAntics @julesG how did you get to the inside end of the ball of yarn? 3y
julesG @GingerAntics I wound it myself that made it easier. When using a commercially wound ball of yarn, I'll have to produce "yarn barf" - poke my finger in the hole at the end of the ball and pull the inside out (hoping I only pull about 5% of the ball out, not 50%). 3y
GingerAntics @julesG oh yeah, that helps. Commercially wound balls are always a bit of a gamble. They claim you can use either end, but let‘s be honest, the inside end is always hard to get to 95% of the time. 3y
Lindy @GingerAntics @julesG I‘m a fan of centre-pull balls, but it‘s rare for me to use inside and outside from the same ball because it gets so tangled when I‘m doing colourwork. I‘m glad it‘s working for you, Jules. Also, “yarn barf” 😂 : I like that description. 3y

I tried. I really did. A funny rom-com historical romance sounded like just what I wanted but it fell very very flat. The characters were not interesting and I didn't want to stick around long enough to find out what they were fighting about. #scribd #audiobook #historicalromance

CoverToCoverGirl Oh darn! This was on my radar. I‘m disappointed to hear this. 3y
tracy.anne8 @CoverToCoverGirl You might like it though! Give it a try if you really want to. Part of it for me might have been the fact it was an audiobook. Not quite the same sometimes as reading it.😊 3y

This was light-hearted historical romance that may have been a bit silly but was still fun, in part because of its silliness. An estranged couple go to greater and greater lengths to get revenge on each other when really they just want to make the other realize how much they love each other.

However, if you don't like romance where the issue between the protagonists could be resolved by having a good talk, this might not be for you.

If you like nonsense and over blown drama creating funny situations resulting in a happy every after this book would be for you. It‘s more over done than your average romance novel to the point I kind of wanted them to just go ahead and kiss and make up. When they did it was must like the rest of the book dramatic and funny and overall worth the read. I recommend it, 4 stars and a fun book.

I enjoyed this audiobook. I finished the entire thing in almost a day and I feel that this book is best in such a way.

I felt like the author did a great job of staying true to the historical era of the book while also making it readable at the same time. I found the interactions between all of the characters interesting. But some of the plot between MCs was tedious at times. I switched from liking them to not several times. Cute little read.

Martha Waters's To Have and to Hoax is a joy. Normally, I'm not a fan of the whole hoaxing trope. I get REALLY impatient with people lying to each other or fooling each other or misunderstanding each other and that ONE thing keeping them apart for the length of the story . . . until the truth is revealed and everything is solved!⠀

Fortunately, this historical romance avoids the more annoying parts of that plotline. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Violet and James meet in the preface--Violet is in the midst of her first season (we're in Regency England here!) and is danced out on to the balcony without a chaperone, making her ripe for ruin and scandal. James swoops in, thinking to save her, and ends up being in the compromised position with her instead . . . and so he proposes. The rest of the book takes places four years after their marriage. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod They've been in a cold war since a fight ended their bliss (it takes most of the book before we learn what the fight was about). Now, they live "together," separate in all but name and household. Then, there's an accident that breaks through the cold and incites fury and anger again, and it's this new feeling that change the course of their relationship. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod Violet decides to perpetrate a hoax in the name of revenge, and the aftermath has a huge impact on the couple and their friends.

I thoroughly enjoyed To Have and to Hoax. I loved the fact that Waters resisted the easy path here and created instead a complex, honest (ha!) relationship that required courage and vulnerability to repair. Up to the end (no spoilers, I promise!), ⬇️
4y
UnabridgedPod the author works toward a relationship that is honest and true AFTER the happily ever after that ends so many books. This is a remarkable debut!⠀

How do you feel about stories that hinge on a misunderstanding being cleared up? OR . . . What are you reading right now?

Wasn‘t going to go on an audio walk today but after going to the store for the first time and two weeks I needed to destress. Didn‘t think I would ever be so stressed and have so much anxiety by just leaving my house to go to the store. I love the pictured flower trees that we have around my neighborhood. They always make me happy to see them. Also I love the banter between James and Violet in the tagged book!

So I lost 6.5 hours listening to this but I just can‘t. What started as a great premise becomes two incredibly unlikeable characters who are tormenting each other because THEY DO NOT TALK. It‘s such a lazy premise to me and boy is it dragged out. It‘s just mean and cruel and I‘m done. End rant. #romantsy

This was a cute and fun historical rom com from #netgalley about a feuding married couple who resort to what is essentially a prank war to get each other's attention back and repair their relationship. I liked the characters, especially the circle of friends surrounding the main couple, and I liked the concept but I think there could have been a better balance between the shenanigans and the deeper relationship work. Out on April 7!
