Topics of Conversation
Topics of Conversation | Miranda Popkey
For readers of Rachel Cusk, Lydia Davis, and Jenny Offill--a compact tour de force about sex, violence, and self-loathing from a ferociously talented new voice in fiction Miranda Popkey's first novel is about desire, disgust, motherhood, loneliness, art, pain, feminism, anger, envy, guilt--written in language that sizzles with intelligence and eroticism. The novel is composed almost exclusively of conversations between women--the stories they tell each other, and the stories they tell themselves, about shame and love, infidelity and self-sabotage--and careens through twenty years in the life of an unnamed narrator hungry for experience and bent on upending her life. Edgy, wry, shot through with rage and despair, Topics of Conversation introduces an audacious and immensely gifted new novelist.

It took me a little bit to get used to her “stream-of-consciousness” writing style. I appreciated the raw and unguarded thoughts and feelings of the MC. However, I didn‘t find the MC relatable. Self-absorbed as she was, I wish the author provided more background as to how and why the MC became the way she is. I wanted to know her, but that opportunity never came. There are some great moments in here, but I was expecting much more.

Sadly, this was a BOTM pick for me and I just couldn‘t hang with this book and I tried. I never like panning books as I think authors pour themselves out onto the page and sometimes it just isn‘t the right person reading it. After the initial story dealing with rape fantasy, I should have realized I wasn‘t the audience, but I kept on. Oh well, just didn‘t connect.

Megabooks It‘s running a 39% dislike at BOTM right now, and I was offered a replacement credit for reviewing it. You may want to look into that. 4d

Megabooks @The_Heeler_Booklife it depends on the number of other people who also don‘t like it. Earlier tonight, ToC was at 39% dislike, but when I reviewed WWWV, it was only running at 6% dislike, which means it‘s less likely you‘ll get credit for it. This book attempts to do something interesting and different. It broaches topics considered taboo and without judgement portrays women's experiences with sex, motherhood, desire, control, power.
While there were pockets of insightfulness, the narrative structure did not work for me. This book is written in stream of consciousness, which made it difficult to dip in and out of it. It also detracted from the meaning the author intended to impart.👇

TheNerdyProfessor I found that the more I read this book, the easier it became to follow the structure. But taking breaks from reading made it hard to get back into. Also, the characters were not likeable, but I believe this is what the author meant to do - show women and all of their flaws, allow them to bare their shame and disgust and weaknesses. I would give this ⭐⭐⭐, great premise but it falls short on execution. 5d

I enjoyed Topics of Conversation. It tells the story of a woman via a series of conversations among groups of women. The timeline jumps between each conversation, and we see the narrator rather unsympathetically dealing with adulthood and motherhood. The writing is a little self-aware, but I was engrossed. I am glad stories like these, about women of all stripes, are becoming more prevalent. #botm

Cinfhen Seeing lots of mixed reviews which makes me curious 6d
thebluestocking @Cinfhen Yeah. I can see this not being for everyone, but I‘m a little surprised at some of the ... hate. Interesting when a book does that. 💙 5d

". . . of course life is random, a series of coincidences, etc., but that to liveyou must attempt to make sense of it, and that's what narrative's for" (162).⠀

Miranda Popkey's Topics of Conversation is absolutely brilliant. It's a loose, wide-ranging look at conversations in one woman's life. Some conversations are obviously significant; others seem to be trivial; ⬇️

UnabridgedPod all of them, however, contribute to the portrait of this woman that we as readers are putting together.

More important, the conversations are the WOMAN's attempts to build a portrait of herself, to make sense of her own life. They're told as she's looking back on her life, and (though this is not explicit) are therefore threads in the story that she's weaving. ⬇️
6d
UnabridgedPod (Sorry notsorry for all of the metaphors!) As she reflects, she is unflinching, unmerciful, in what she concludes about herself. For me, that evoked MORE empathy, more grace, than if she had made excuses or sought to blur the sometimes ugly truth of her actions and identity. I don't know if it's truly possible to spoil this book as it's really about character, but there is a joy of discovering ⬇️ 6d
UnabridgedPod alongside the narrator, each conversation, so I'm not going to summarize further. I will just say that I took great joy in Popkey's "Works (Not) Cited" section at the end of the book--it's not part of the novel, but I love the attempt by the author to pay tribute to all of the works that had an impact on her creative process. Overall, I absolutely recommend this slim novel that holds depths beyond its 215 pages. 6d
batsy Nice review! I have this stacked. 6d

Hands down one of the worst #BOTM choices ever. Instead of Everybody Poops, this should be called Everybody Lies. Not one reliable character in the bunch. The dialogue is horrible and stilted. And it‘s about as sexy as a trip to the gynecologist. Glad that‘s over.

Megabooks @BarbaraBB Thanks, Barbara! high five Steph! Too bad we wasted a BOTM pick on this! 6d
Reviewsbylola It‘s ridiculous to me that they chose this. Didn‘t they learn from their last flop? I expect BOTM to be a bit more mainstream. This was so experimental imo. @Megabooks It definitely doesn‘t hold a wide appeal. 6d
peaknit Oh no😱 it‘s my pick too. Win some, lose some:) 6d
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I agree that it‘s experimental but I though it would be a little more Sally Rooney - like slightly out there. Outside the box, but on the planet. This was in a different solar system. 6d

So I‘m 1/3 through this book and I‘m completely unsure of how I feel about it. Actually, I‘m not even sure wtf is happening. The one thing I do know is that this seems like a book @Megabooks will love!

Megabooks Omg, I HAAATTTEEE it!! If you‘re on Instagram friend me and read my rant. (Megabooksreads is my handle) I was 130/200 pages in and quit. I‘m going to TRY to finish this weekend, but honestly, I think it‘s one of the worst choices BOTM has ever made. This woman can‘t write dialogue at all! Her paragraph structure makes no sense. lele1432 I‘m now so glad I held off on both this one and When We Were Vikings😆 I was so interested in the subject matter of this one, but something told me I might not connect with it. If I read it, it will definitely be a library copy! 1w

I really enjoy books where you get inside a character's head and really "get" them, so this book worked for me. Didn't mind the lack of plot too much either, or the odd style, though it did become annoying in some places. This goes deep into many of the more negative emotions that this woman (many women) experiences, like shame, and discontent. It's an odd format that won't be for everyone, but I was into it.

Wooo im struggling with this one! The writing! 🥴 Its taken me half way through to realize the narrator is the same person in each story with the same characters. The sentences are so choppy thats its distracting and i keep stumbling and having to reread them. I wouldnt doubt that this would read way better as an audio book. That first paragraph in the picture is TWO SENTENCES! This is messy to me. Not comfortable to read at all.

BookishMarginalia I‘d bail... life‘s too short and there are too many other books! 2w

Megabooks @BarbaraBB it‘s very Sally Rooney, but I don‘t quite like her as much as sally so far. The paragraphs are a bit on the long side, but that might not be as weird for others. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Jury is still out!! 2w
Reviewsbylola I just got mine! 🥰 2w
Cinfhen I wish, but no. Once they get to my parents house, I need to find someone traveling to Israel who will bring them. It‘s starting to become a huge hassle! Probably not worth keeping the account- but I can‘t let go ☹️My backlog gets so overwhelming 🥺 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I kind of get how you feel as far as keeping it, although I also understand why you may have to give it up. I love the way the BOTM books are bound. They lay open so nicely on my Flippy. I would have a hard time giving it up even though I have about 10 in backlog. I‘m slightly addicted. 😂 plus I generally enjoy their picks.
