I‘m pleased to have squeezed another witchy read into October. I enjoyed this one - and I enjoyed the autumnal palette used.

Halloween seems to be a big cover read time of year for me, but I‘m really glad I indulged my impulse on this one. It was right up my alley! I think my favorite thing was that it‘s one of those rare YA titles where the adult main characters are rendered as, if not more, fully than the teens. Especially in the art. You get a lot of personality in the way the grandmothers are drawn. I also really liked the blending of Sukkot & Midwinter Festival.

I saw this on a Buzzfeed Halloween/Witches books list and thought the cover was adorable. It‘s available on Hoopla, so I checked it out. The art was cute, but the story was choppy and fell flat for me. It‘s a quick read, but not particularly memorable. It‘s definitely not one I‘ll put on a reread list.

xicanti This was my experience, too. I was surprised, given how many of my friends love it. 1mo

Okay this was super cute! A queer hard-of-hearing witch and a non-binary werewolf are reunited after a childhood friendship and team up to defeat a demon spirit (and maybe kiss a little 😉)
Lovely representation and beautiful art. It was such a perfect Halloween read 🍂

Almost every time I‘ve asked for graphic novel recommendations, Mooncakes has come up! But it‘s out of print and I couldn‘t find it at any of my local libraries *but* I finally found a copy on eBay where the postage wasn‘t the same price (or more 🥺) as the book… (actually, I‘ve just looked it up again and it might have just been out of stock? but I feel like the journey that I took to find this developed character)

(recommendations welcome!)

CBee If you read on Kindle or other e-reader, you could try Hoopla or Libby? ComiXology might have it as well. 5mo
ShyBookOwl It's available on Amazon in paperback, hardback, and digital 5mo
ravenlee I read it on hoopla, if that helps at all. 5mo

There wasn‘t much explanation of this magical world or their family history upfront, so I felt confused for many parts throughout before I figured things out via context clues. The story was nice, but nothing too extraordinary for me. Long lost friends, a werewolf and witch, become lovers and help each other to take care of a demon. The art style wasn‘t something I liked that much either.

Fun young adult graphic novel with witches, werewolves and a demon. Loved the LGBTQ+ rep and the one of the main characters wears a hearing aid, bonus points for representation!

I loved this! Are there more? Because I really want there to be more. I love all the representation, the relationships among the characters (Nova and Tam, the Nanas, the family ties, the cats, the spirits, the friends...), and the witch/werewolf magic was just icing on the cake. So good! Thanks Hoopla, for making this easy to stumble across.

This was a cute comic featuring a great cast of POC characters as well as lgbtqa+ and deaf representation which was something I really liked as there were some good nods to all parties.

Illustration wise, I liked the design and look of the characters. Each character had their own look and style which visually showcased more of that character.

My first finished read of this year was the graphic novel Mooncakes. Not quite my cup of tea it felt a bit too short but I tend to think that about graphic novels anyways. I know this one is about Nova and Tam but I'd totally love a series of them based on Nova's grandmas fighting the paranormal. Also a positive thing is the artwork in mooncakes is adorable.

CBee I agree! I‘d like more backstory on the grandmas 😁 9mo

I have wanted to read this for a while and was so happy it was on Hoopla. What a great story! So much representation! I will now need to get myself a copy because I will want to read it again. A witch and a werewolf story that is not your conventional story. And, a bit of a Tam Lin retelling. It was great. I am so happy I read this.

5 stars. This graphic novel stood out from others I have read. The storyline is rich and complete at 256 pages. We get to see well-rounded interesting characters (beyond the white hetero standard). Xu's illustrations are charming, engaging, and expertly rendered to align with Walker's story. I read this slower than other graphic novels because I wanted to spend time immersing myself in the illustrations and dialogue.

Finished this one in bed last night while trying to ignore election results. I've seen mixed reviews for it, but I thought it was solid. I loved the artwork. The characters and world building were fun, even if they weren't perfect. I liked the plot quite a bit too. One main character is a witch, the other is a werewolf. They have to teem up to defeat a demon brought by a cult. Also, there's a queer relationship between a girl and nonbinary person

I‘m mixed on this one. I liked the general premise but sometimes the story felt like it was missing...something. The art helped improve the quality of the story, though. And there‘s just a brief mention of mooncakes in a story named after them???

I started this Forever ago and was in no hurry to finish because it's a sweet, fairly calm, inclusive (lesbian grannies, a girl with hearing loss, a genderneutral werewolf, poc main characters, etc), beautiful comic. I enjoyed the story (but the conflict resolution felt awkward) and the art was a delight! My favorite was the whimsical spirit creatures that we see sometimes and the background details. A perfect fall read. #LGBTQ #Inclusive #Magic

This is the second comic I'm reading this week that references Sailor Moon in a background. (I shared the Sailor Moon panel in screenshots from the other one too!) I think I see this anime/manga referenced more often than I see any other! It really impacted and inspired so many people who now pay it homage in their own work 🥰 #manga #anime #inspiration #SailorMoon #LGBTQ

“A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft.” Nova Huang lnow more about magic than your regular teen witch since she works with her Grandmas in their bookstore.

The book had me at love and demons. I really enjoyed this graphic novel. The artwork was really amazing and I loved the storyline. I haven‘t read a lot of books with transgender characters like this and really liked how it was written.

There was nothing wrong with this. Maybe I wanted a book about magic users to explain something about how magic worked? Something about the art felt...rushed? Maybe I expected some moon cakes in a book called moon cakes? Maybe I‘m just in a horrible mood and I shouldn‘t take it out on sweet story with some sweet Miyazaki-esque images?

Here‘s a little graphic novel about a teen witch and her former BFF/maybe more werewolf who came back to town. Together they need to face down a demon... it‘s a little choppy (especially at the beginning) but I dig the diversity and room is left for more adventures/romance. #readathon #book2done #deweysreadathon #deweysapril

Prompt: Read a book with a protagonist with a disability.
