Call Me by Your Name
Call Me by Your Name: A Novel | André Aciman
Call Me by Your Name is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliff-side mansion on the Italian Riviera. Unprepared for the consequences of their attraction, at first each feigns indifference. But during the restless summer weeks that follow, unrelenting buried currents of obsession and fear, fascination and desire, intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them. What grows from the depths of their spirits is a romance of scarcely six weeks' duration and an experience that marks them for a lifetime. For what the two discover on the Riviera and during a sultry evening in Rome is the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy. The psychological maneuvers that accompany attraction have seldom been more shrewdly captured than in André Aciman's frank, unsentimental, heartrending elegy to human passion. Call Me by Your Name is clear-eyed, bare-knuckled, and ultimately unforgettable.

Finished the book on shabbat. It‘s a sensual tale of identity and young love. Last night I went with my wife and daughter to a screening of the movie at the Jerusalem Cinematheque followed by an Q&A with the author, Professor Aciman. He was humble and charming, erudite and entertaining. What a fabulous evening as part of the Jerusalem Writers‘ Festival 2019.

Tanisha_A I loved this book. And I hear Mr. Aciman this year at Jaipur Literature Fest, such a delight! 2w
Tanisha_A *heard 2w
Smrloomis Nice. @Tanisha_A I imagine the Jaipur festival is lovely though I‘ve never been. Maybe someday! 🤞🏽 2w

Finally finished this book today. I started in December and it was going quickly, but then my heart got broken and I just couldn't read a book about romance...and then I had a reading slump for four months. But here we are, it is finished, and it had some things I liked about it (the writing, older Elio) and some things I didn't (the relationship, especially the lead-up). Glad I read it! #newyearwhodis @Emilymdxn @monalyisha

Emilymdxn I‘m so sorry you‘ve had such a tough time ? sending love. Definitely prioritise your well-being over getting a certain amount of reading done! Books can always wait. I‘m so glad there were bits you liked - I loved the writing style most of all rather than the contents, but then I‘m such a fan girl I‘d probably read André Aciman‘s shopping lists 1mo

Aashkaar I assure you that its a very beautiful read. It was first time for me to read gay literature but then, the best part is that i found myself totally connected to it, to the protagonists especially. And by the end, it wasn't about gender or sexuality but more about love. It was all that mattered and that's how i found it relatable 3mo

1. Current reads: “Call Me By Your Name” by Andre Aciman, “Naked in Death” by JD Robb, “The City in the Middle of the Night” by Charlie Jane Anders, and “The King‘s Traitor” by Jeff Wheeler 📚
2. Lately I prefer standalone! Series are such a commitment especially if they‘re 4+ books!

The movie followed the novel so closely that it‘s possible I didn‘t need to listen to it. Elio‘s longing for Oliver was even more pronounced in the novel and brought me back to my teenage years, years so filled with lust and longing. Two things: 1) probably not a good book to listen to when you‘re babysitting 🤦🏻‍♀️ & 2) Armie Hammer‘s voice. The article says it all: https://www.vulture.com/2017/09/just-20-descriptions-of-armie-hammers-voice.html

I am not a big fan of romance novels, and while this one was well written.. it is still a romance novel. I understand that in profiling a same sex romance, it is approaching the genre from a seldom viewed perspective. However, it relies on the same tired trope (older paramour teaches adolescent about sexuality and love) that makes me roll my eyes with every other book that takes up this played out storyline. In a word “meh” 2/5

Maybe this new Kindle case will help me get my reading bug back🤞 I've been both busy and sick for the last two months and haven't finished a book since January 18 (and that was a book I had started in December). This is the longest I've gone without finishing a book in years. 😪 Miss y'all and miss reading, just haven't had the time or energy. @Emilymdxn I'm still excited to read your book list, when I'm reading again! #readingslump

Latest read for my real life book club.
The coming of age story of a summer romance between Elio and the American student Oliver who comes to stay with Elio and his family in Italy in the early 80s.
I liked but didn‘t love this book. The writing was beautiful but sometimes Elio‘s melodramatic teenage ways were a bit much.
I loved the setting, it was perfect for the story and liked the bittersweet ending.
That apricot though. 🍑😳

Bailedbailed

Ugh. I hate that I'm bailing on another #LGBTQ book, but I just can't do it. I'm 10% in and so far the whole thing is just a boy fantasizing about another boy, which could be interesting, but sadly there was nothing to make it stand out. It was just pages of the same thing said a little bit different. I guess now I can finally watch the movie. Which will hopefully be more interesting.

TheBookDream I liked the book and movie, but probably the movie more 4mo
Redwritinghood I bailed on this one too. 4mo
Elma @TheBookDream That's good to hear. I've been wanting to see it since it came out, but missed it in theaters. And then decided I needed to read the book first, but my hold took forever. If I didn't have so many other things to read I might try to power through. But at least now I can watch the movie. 4mo

Call Me By My Name was tantalizing and beautiful. Beguiling and intimate. I was brought to this book after first experiencing the film. Although they share many similarities the book had its own completely unique flavor. The biggest discrepancy being the extent of Elio‘s suffering due to his love and longing. The movie tells a story of infatuation, while the book tells a tale of life-long love.

Y'all, I don't even know where to start.

I listened to this inside of twenty-four hours because I couldn't tear myself away. Aciman chronicles an intense, profoundly selfish love that also manages to be a truly intimate, authentic experience for both parties. It's the essence of being an allosexual 17-year-old; and, perhaps, of being queer and scared and eager in the 1980s. I don't know if I LIKED it, but I think I loved it.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I loved this book. So good. 9mo

Omg this book. It is pure, sensual, real, heartbreaking. I can go on, but really I‘m speechless. It was beautiful; an honest love letter.

The bf is playing video games, so that means I get to read!! Back to enjoying this #audiobook!

I‘m back to this novel and doing it by #audiobook and tangible read. The lack of chapters threw me off, but I really wanted to read it! I find zero chapters exhausting, because I never know where to break LOL. On a pleasing note, Armie Hammer narrates the audiobook! 😍#currentlyreading #currentlylistening

Chiamami col tuo nome | André Aciman

“Dopo!”. Dopo!
