The Virgin Suicides
The Virgin Suicides | Jeffrey Eugenides
First published in 1993, The Virgin Suicides announced the arrival of a major new American novelist. In a quiet suburb of Detroit, the five Lisbon sisters—beautiful, eccentric, and obsessively watched by the neighborhood boys—commit suicide one by one over the course of a single year. As the boys observe them from afar, transfixed, they piece together the mystery of the family’s fatal melancholy, in this hypnotic and unforgettable novel of adolescent love, disquiet, and death. Jeffrey Eugenides evokes the emotions of youth with haunting sensitivity and dark humor and creates a coming-of-age story unlike any of our time. Adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Sofia Coppola, The Virgin Suicides is a modern classic, a lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life.

This was very interesting. It was done tastefully, and really captures some of the feeling that follows the suicide of someone (or in the case of this book, 5 someones) that you know. Never does the author try to explain how the parents felt, which honestly was a relief to me. It definitely is something I need to continue to digest, but I was pleasantly surprised in reading this, whether of my reaction or how it was written I don‘t know.

My mom & brother came to visit today, which was SO nice. I miss them a lot. This book isn‘t hitting me as hard as I thought it might, but that may just be because I can relate to the narrators more. Either way, it‘s living up to my opinion of the movie.👌🏼 #weekendreads #kittenlittens #littenkittens #snugglecats #familyvisits #bookupdates

I think I‘ll try this one next. I love the movie, but haven‘t watched it since my grandfather‘s suicide, so I‘m not sure how well I‘m going to do. If I make it, I‘m submitting it for book to movie for #booked2019 - here goes nothing!

monalyisha I‘ve also been worried about how sensitive this one might be or not be. I‘ll be interested in your thoughts. Good luck! (I‘m so sorry to hear about your grandpa. 💕) 7d
MolliesaurusRex @monalyisha thank you - it‘s been over a year but sometimes it still doesn‘t seem like it happened at all. It‘s a very strange experience. The movie wasn‘t what I would call insensitive - it‘s basically this group of neighborhood boys trying to piece together what happened to this family - but obviously it‘s a trigger for me. I‘ll definitely let you know what I think as I read! 7d

Nope. Nuh-uh. Don‘t think so. Maybe it‘s because I read “Middlesex” first (and that‘s a great book), but apart from the evocative writing, this book‘s been a disappointment. So nope, this one gets a pan.📚

Unpopular opinion- I did not like this book. Told from the POV of a group of adolescents boys, the story is about the five Lisbon girls who love in the same neighborhood. The boys are obsessed with the girls, remembering details, memories, and interactions. Cecilia, the youngest attempts and later commits suicide. The remaining 4 sisters commit suicide later. The meticulous descriptions are gorgeous but it felt flat as I didn‘t get the girls‘ POV.

Megabooks It‘s a rare instance when the movie is better than the book. 💙 Sofia Coppola 2mo

I‘ve always wanted to read this book and watch the movie. The book started out a little slow and was told in an odd style of writing, but I still found it compelling. It‘s the story of the 5 Lisbon sisters and how they all end up committing suicide over a year‘s span of time in the 70s. Sounds depressing and it definitely is in some ways, but it‘s interesting to see how suicide not only affects your family and friends, but an entire community. 4⭐️

I‘ve just finished my book, but I don‘t want to wake everyone up to go get a new book... both cats and the husband are sleeping on the other end of the couch...

This is an interesting story, but the writing style wasn‘t for me. Told from the “we” point of view of the boys in a neighborhood where a family of 5 daughters took their own lives within a year. It‘s strange, kind of haunting, and not bad, but not a pick for me.

The movie was way, way better! This book bored me with it's overly long descriptions. 87 pages in and the book is describing trees & autumn leaves falling and how people in the neighbourhood are raking up the leaves - it goes on for TWO pages!!!! "Different families used different methods. The Buells employed a three-man formation, with two rakers raking lengthwise and another sweeping in at a right angle..." OMG!! Time to bail, I think!!

This is my new favorite Eugenides book, though the only other one I read was Middlesex, of which the bar was set so high. The music, the sadness, and the intimacy were captivating. In reading the dust jacket, I expected the plot line to be boring and mundane. The pace was perfect and satisfying.

It‘s not a bad book; at times it‘s rather dreamy and poetic. The blurb on the back said the boys piece together the mystery of the family‘s melancholy but they don‘t. Perhaps the best thing about the book is that there is no reason given for the why the girls commit suicide. The problem with this book is the overwhelmingly creep factor of the boys‘ obsession about 5 dead girls. I am tired of fiction that makes troubled/dead girls romantic.

Demo explained it to us like this: “We Greeks are a moody people. Suicide makes sense to us. Putting up Christmas lights after your own daughter does it—that makes no sense. What my yia yia could never understand about America was why everyone pretended to be happy all the time.”

I do not understand the popularity of this book. It was a bunch of man-boys mansplaining the tragic suicides of girls they didn‘t even really know, but lusted after in a creepy, stalker-ish way. And then at the end they had the gall to say the girls‘ suicides have been selfish because the boys‘ lives had been ruined by them. Nope nope nope nope nope.

Playing around with my #MakeMeReadIt list since it‘s the 4th of July & I have no responsibilities! 🎉 Hence the early afternoon beer *and* the coffee. 😅

So far, Jane Eyre has the most votes (10). Oryx & Crake is in 2nd place (9 votes), & Lamb is in 3rd (8). It‘s a close race!

A couple of books are twinning (👯‍♀️) in 4th: In the Woods, & A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Smushed together in 5th: The Bell Jar, Interview, Geek Love, & Northanger Abbey.

I'm the unpopular opinion here but I did not like the execution of this book. At. All.--and I was really curious about the story!
The nameless narrator, retrospect narrative, and paragraph-long sentences just didn't work for me. I was so bored by the second half of this book that I couldn't fully appreciate the dark, underlying topics that the story explores.
I will be watching the movie, though. I love S.Coppola ❤
