Love and Friendship | Jane Austen
30 posts | 27 read | 13 to read
How often, in answer to my repeated intreaties that you would give my Daughter a regular detail of the Misfortunes and Adventures of your Life, have you said "No, my friend never will I comply with your request till I may be no longer in Danger of again experiencing such dreadful ones." Surely that time is now at hand. You are this day 55. If a woman may ever be said to be in safety from the determined Perseverance of disagreeable Lovers and the cruel Persecutions of obstinate Fathers, surely it must be at such a time of Life.

When I first read this book I truthfully was a bit disappointed with my dear Jane Austin and felt this wasn‘t her best work. Then I found out that she wrote it when she was only 14!!! I shall never doubt such a beloved author again. So is it amazing? No… but it is worth reading and is still impressive considering the age and experience of the author as this was also her first book. #52challenge

Well this was a RIOT! The funniest 20 pages I‘ve read in some time. Young Jane is having a blast sending up the sentimental 18th century novels —so much swooning, so much drama, so many outrageous coincidences. Very silly, but the emergence of a great wit is also very much in evidence.

Next up in Eng550: Jane Austen‘s Love and Freindship. Excited to take down a volume from last month‘s EBay find, the 1989 Folio Society Collected Works, and this is in the one volume I haven‘t already read! #summerschool #pemberlittens

LeahBergen This is the set I have. My favourite! 3y

KVanRead @LeahBergen Yes, I‘ve admired yours for some time so when I saw this one pop up on EBay I had to have it. #LitsyMadeMeDoIt or should I say Leah, lol! 3y
LeahBergen I‘m so happy to be a bad influence here. 😆 I find that everything about these editions (binding, font, wood engravings) really suit Austen‘s novels, don‘t you? I don‘t like really modern editions of her work. 🤫 3y
KVanRead @LeahBergen Yes. They are just perfect 💗 3y

“Run mad as often as you choose, but do not faint!”
Jane Austen is a comedian and no one will ever be able to change my mind. The fact that she wrote this book as a teen, making fun of the stereotypes of women at the time and romance novels in general makes me love her even more. This short story is anything but subtle and an absolute riot to read. Introduces a lot of themes she dives deeper into in later books.

This story I initially thought was a bit of a drag - it was effectively Laura giving a monologue in a series of letters. That was until the last one - the ending was very sudden, very comforting, and exactly what I needed. I feel this is a story I will be coming back to when I need a good familiar literary hug.

I normally spend Sunday morning at my favorite yoga class, which the regulars refer to as Yoga Church. In honor of Jane Austen's Birthday I showed off my Pride & Prejudice Yoga Pants. It's a little bit of a drive so I always have Audio book going. Today was one of Jane's earliest works. It was delightful. 💙💙💙💙💙

This is a series of short stories by Jane Austen. I really enjoyed the main story but I struggled with some of the other stories. Having said that I have great admiration for Austen, these stories were written when she was aged 11-18. I couldn't have written anything remotely as good.

I posted a bit ago about how much I love Litsy, one Litten ( @mrsmarch ) asked why it is that Litsy is so wonderful? This is my answer:

I think people who read a lot develop more empathy and understanding than the average person. I think that we, as readers, spend so much of our time looking at life through other people‘s eyes, that we find it easier to be caring and emotionally supportive. This is just my theory, but it makes sense to me. 💞

GypsyKat I really love you all! 💗💗💗 #LitsyLove 6y

I finished Cress on Friday and enjoyed a few quick reads before continuing on with The Lunar Chronicles, this being one of them.

I adore Jane Austen. This early work is silly fun. I can nearly imagine how amused and proud her family must have been as she shared it with them. I only have Sandition left to enjoy as a first-read.

CrowCAH Will you see the movie with Kate Beckinsale? 7y
CogsOfEncouragement @CrowCAH I have also read Lady Susan which confusingly the movie Love & Friendship is based on. I have not seen it yet (mom problems) but I intend to, yes. 7y

Lizpixie What's the point???? This is my support group, my enablers, my book family, my reason for getting on social media and for letting me know it's not just me that feels this way about books. In a world where "interior decorators" talk about books as "design aspects" & people call a home library "hoarding" there are others who want to punch them in the throat too. Yeah, you're my people.??? 8y

Nebklvr New book recs by people who love to read....finding out you aren't the only book freak out there..... Enjoying the humor and compassion shared on a daily basis....was there a certain number of reasons needed? Because i can go on and on and...... 8y
Vblancsbooks I don't have many friends that read and this is perfect for discussing books & sharing my obsession with reading! #lovelitsy 8y
Zelma I accidentally read this as "I was talking to a bookish fiend the other day day". I think that perfectly illustrated my mindset and love of Litsy. The point? I have found my people and community, great discussion, non trolling social media, a celebration of what I hold dearest in my life. 8y
moranadatter It's all books all the time AND the community of readers is wonderful. I've seen smart conversations about difficult issues conducted here with a healthy dose of empathy. I see people who didn't love a book treated well by fans of the book and vice versa. It's hard to find that on the Internet these days. 8y
Tanner I love the Litsy community; I can come and go and often as I want, everyone is very respectful with one another, and I don't feel like a freak for buying books because they're beautiful or buying a particular version for the cover. Neither do I feel the need to defend my reading format. Yay, Litsy! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @kmdartist Exactly that! I couldn't agree more! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love to read and talk about what I've read (with people who also love books) and this is really the only place to do it for a reader living in a largely non-reading world. Plus the variety of books you can discuss here is exponential, in an in-person book club you might be able to assemble a group that loves mysteries, or romances, but here....there's someone who likes every type of book. 8y
Theresa It's such an accepting community. I always used to think I was a big reader but then I joined Litsy & realized I can't hold candle to many of you when it comes to the # and variety of books you've read & over such a long time. But that's okay. You'll never hear, "You don't fit in," or "You're not worthy," types of comments. Well maybe that'll happen if I admit that I have no desire to read Harry Potter, but... ? 8y
kdwinchester So many wonderful comments! Thank you all for sharing the Litsy love! ❤️📚 8y
BookNerdBritt How I know I love Litsy? I haven't checked Litsy in about 4 days. Had it been Instagram, or Twitter, I would have dreaded having to scroll all the way back down to where I last checked from (or would have said "fuck it" and started from the top). But I can't think of a better way to spend my Saturday morning than in bed catching up on every single Litsy post I missed. 8y
