Mad Enchantment
Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies | Ross King
13 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
Claude Monet is perhaps the world's most beloved artist, and among all his creations, the paintings of the water lilies in his garden at Giverny are most famous. Seeing them in museums around the world, viewers are transported by the power of Monet's brush into a peaceful world of harmonious nature. Monet himself intended them to provide "an asylum of peaceful meditation.? Yet, as Ross King reveals in his magisterial chronicle of both artist and masterpiece, these beautiful canvases belie the intense frustration Monet experienced at the difficulties of capturing the fugitive effects of light, water, and color. They also reflect the terrible personal torments Monet suffered in the last dozen years of his life. Mad Enchantment tells the full story behind the creation of the Water Lilies, as the horrors of World War I came ever closer to Paris and Giverny, and a new generation of younger artists, led by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, were challenging the achievements of Impressionism. By early 1914, French newspapers were reporting that Monet, by then 73 and one of the world's wealthiest, most celebrated painters, had retired his brushes. He had lost his beloved wife, Alice, and his eldest son, Jean. His famously acute vision--what Paul Cezanne called "the most prodigious eye in the history of painting"--was threatened by cataracts. And yet, despite ill health, self-doubt, and advancing age, Monet began painting again on a more ambitious scale than ever before. Linking great artistic achievement to the personal and historical dramas unfolding around it, Ross King presents the most intimate and revealing portrait of an iconic figure in world culture--from his lavish lifestyle and tempestuous personality to his close friendship with the fiery war leader Georges Clemenceau, who regarded the Water Lilies as one of the highest expressions of the human spirit.

The author takes the reader on a journey through the late years of Monet‘s life while living and painting in Giverny. Since Monet was dear friends with a politician and the war was occurring, much of the book includes these topics. The author writes about Monet‘s painting, gardens, family, losses, and appetite for food and wine. I‘m always fascinated to learn about people from the past and this book did not disappoint. #MountTBR

The Christmas book haul! (My stack is under a for tall this year because I also asked for a lot of art supplies, lol.) I've already started Mad Enchantment, and so far it's fantastic.

Funny how things happen. My cousin in Boston read this for her book club and told me. I researched it here in Perth and found it in our library system. Just finished it. Great reading. Such wonderful research pulled together in a very readable book. I've been to Monets garden. A real highlight in my life. This book filled in the gaps. Highly recommend. @MrsMalaprop

Bailedbailed

I wanted to love this book, but it's just too heavy and the writing too dry. There are some charming details about Monet included. And lots about French politics and the carnage of World War I.

I'm not ruling out another try, and I did get to 30% so I'll review what I can for NetGalley.

LeahBergen Oh, too bad. I was hoping this was a good one as the author will be on tour in my city this fall. 8y
Autumn I was afraid of that...😬 Bummer 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury USA for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

ValerieAndBooks I've really enjoyed what I've read of his -- I love art/art history though. I've not read this one yet. Hmm! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LeahBergen @autumn Part of my problem right now is that I three books from the library that I'm DYING to read. I won't force myself to finish Mad Enchantment and have to return the other books unread. If you are an art historian or a more serious Monet fan than I am, you may love it. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ValerieAndBooks You may love this then. I think he has a fairly distinct style, and it's just not working for me. I intend to try it again in the next few months. 8y

Having trouble getting into either of these today. I'm about 3% into the Monet book - I'll give it until 10-15% before bailing. I'll probably finish Labyrinth - at 36% already. And of course it could be me!

Megabooks I'm having trouble sticking with anything, too. I've finally settled on Babbit in Serial Reader. I bought it so I can go ahead. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Ebooksandcooks I was thinking about the Serial Reader book I've been ignoring! 8y

This was an exhausting read. Information was constantly restated to the point that I desperately wanted to bail. I only finished it because I love Monet and wanted to know more about his life. I would only recommend this to someone who desperately loves Monet.

Nyx the eyeless library cat and I are teleworking today. Ross King's new book about Monet is published in Sept. Our first impression (heh) is very good.
