Lighter Than My Shadow
Lighter Than My Shadow | Katie Green
Like most kids, Katie was a picky eater. Shed sit at the table in silent protest, hide uneaten toast in her bedroom, listen to parental threats that shed have to eat it for breakfast. But in any life a set of circumstance can collide, and normal behavior might soon shade into something sinister, something deadly. Lighter Than My Shadow is a hand-drawn story of struggle and recovery, a trip into the black heart of a taboo illness, an exposure of those who are so weak as to prey on the vulnerable, and an inspiration to anybody who believes in the human power to endure towards happiness.

A hard book to read, but definitely an eye opener for someone who has never experienced body dysmorphia or an eating disorder. And those who have, this book is very validating and helpful. 💕

In this graphic memoir, Katie Green shares her experience of food disorder (anorexia and boulimia), but also of sexual abuse. It's a book about the illness: how it came to be, how it progressed, how she experienced this illness, etc. But it is also a book about recovery, showing how difficult the recovery process is. This book offers a great perspective.

Katie vividly portrays her struggles with her eating disorder and anxiety. I feel like this book gives readers a strong understanding of what it's like having eating disorders and the conexities of these controlling illnesses. I'd highly recommend this book. Content warnings for eating disorder, anxiety, sexual abuse, and suicide ideation. #mentalhealth #comic #memoir #nonfiction

I haven‘t read as much as I thought I would in the last 2 months, but I HAVE read—-just haven‘t posted much. So- fair warning!! I am trying to catch up! 😊

This graphic novel was great, and one I stumbled upon when the library was still open. Katie was a picky eater as a kid, and grew into a young woman with an eating disorder. I thought that this did an excellent job of really showing the thoughts and feelings Katie had throughout her illness.

This memoir in the form of a graphic novel does an amazing job of showing the toll an eating disorder takes not only on the victim, but also on those around her. If you are a teenager, are the parents of a teenager, or work with teenagers, I highly recommend reading this one.

Graphic novel memoir concerning eating disorders and sexual abuse. It is well done, although I though the eating disorder parts were done a bit better. The art works with the story, in a muted palette of mostly blacks, white, and grays.

An emotional journey through a young woman anarexis nervosa to just plam disordered eating. Told in a graphic book the art does have some similarities to characters in some sections but overall it is a must read.

A poignant yet beautiful memoir about the author's struggles with eating disorder, stemming from low self-esteem and anxiety that eventually leads to sexual assault. Loved the black & white hand-drawn illustrations. They're simple but powerful and evocative. A chunkster - over 500 pages - but worth the read!

Rating: 4.5🌟

A powerful graphic memoir about the author/illustrator‘s struggle with perfectionism, eating disorders, and sexual abuse.

She says in the forward, “You are holding the book I wish had been there for me. It exists because I wanted nobody else to feel as lost, confused and alone as I felt. I wanted to be honest about how hard recovery is, and how long it takes, at the same time proving that it is possible.” #readathon

#Aprella Day 7: In most women‘s attempts to achieve a #SuperModel lithe figure, a few succumb to eating disorders, as portrayed in Katie Green‘s graphic novel memoir here. This is both a purging and cleansing act for her, capturing her ghosts through pen, paper, and powerful images.

January 2018 was crappy to put it mildly, but at least my reading started off strong. I‘m so glad to have found the tagged book at the end of the month - it was the right book at the right time for me.

This was such a powerful and emotional journey. There are traumatic events in here so please proceed with caution, but it was worth the time and effort for me. Katie Green shows us her struggles and how it‘s okay to not be okay. She shows is that it‘s okay to strive for perfection but also to fall short of it. Most important of all, it‘s okay to be a work in progress.

2018 // 021 | Lighter Than My Shadow - Katie Green | 2013 | 509pp

This graphic memoir, quite hefty at over 500 pages, explores the author‘s experiences of anorexia. I found this book to be honest and emotionally moving, and quite the insight into the grief and struggle around this condition. An excellent read.

Read if you like: Blankets (Thompson)

I feel so sad. I saw someone in college do this --- rummaging in the trash can for food, when I walked past her dorm room. She smiled at me and waved.
She was very very thin. The rest of us gossiped about her. We didn't know about eating disorders in those days decades ago.

I've been having awful anxiety lately primarily due to preparations for grad school. I feel like I've been on the edge of a panic attack for the past few days. 😱

In other news, here is an awesome display that my bookstore has up. The tagged book looks intriguing.

Katie Green documents her eating disorder beginning in early childhood through her college years in this amazing graphic novel. There are a lot of serious issues addressed in this novel but they are dealt with in a compassionate and gentle manner.

Although a 500 page graphic novel may seem like a daunting read, Lighter Than My Shadow reads quickly with simple graphics and sparse words. However, these images and dialogue make up a powerful & heartbreaking memoir that ends with hope and triumph.

Green chronicles dealing with anorexia, anxiety and other issues throughout her life. Although these are heavy topics, she does well at portraying them with the simplicity of her writing and images.

#TBRtemptation post 1! #BEA17 edition! This is a thick, heavy graphic novel. Autobiographical, and created to help those with loved ones who have mental health issues. This looks like a very insightful read. This is the story of Katie and her struggle with and recovery from eating disorders and anxieties associated with growing up. A comic book memoir with depth and vividness. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

This book represents eating disorders, PTSD, and the quest for perfection in such a deeply moving and insightful light. The illustrations are beautiful, and perfectly match the story. I was deeply moved and will continue to reflect on this book for a very long time.
