This is the moment I understand Holden. This book knocked me out and I wish terribly that I could call Salinger up and talk to him about it. Bananafish, Esme, Teddy. This was a glorious, heart-breaking, question-everything read. I really dig cynical, depressing reads, I guess...😂😂😂📚

I haven‘t read any Salinger since I was 17, had just been dumped, and Holden Caulfield just understood how everyone at my school was a phoney... I enjoyed this tho! Very well crafted short stories particularly For Esme With Love and Squalor, which was more tender than I was expecting, and delightfully American - very escapist for this English girl. Minus some points for how he made references to native Americans 🤢

hermyknee I loved Salinger, and this book particularly, when I was in high school. I wonder how I would feel about it now as an adult. Great review! 8mo
Leftcoastzen Still love that book , those stories. 8mo

When Salinger saw this seductive pulp cover on his book (based on one of the short stories in this collection), he blew his top. Especially since his character Esme was a 7-year-old girl! From then on, rumor has it that J.D. added a mandatory clause in every publishing contract: nothing but a text title and his name could be on the cover-front or back-of any of his books. And absolutely no images. Who knew!

‘The Laughing Man‘ was the best, imo. Can‘t read any of JD‘s stuff anymore, ‘tho. Joyce Maynard‘s account of her time with him kind of ruined it for me. How can a guy who wrote with such seeming empathy act in such a despicable manner towards another human being. Don‘t trust your heroes, literary or otherwise.

readordierachel @vivastory You should! I think I'm gonna (re)read my way right though all his work. How long ago did you read it? 2y

readordierachel @mrp27 It's so good! Every story. 2y
vivastory The summary I graduated high school I read all of his books in a couple of weeks. When I reread Catcher in the Rye last year I enjoyed it significantly more than when I first read it. 2y
readordierachel @vivastory It's nice when that happens. I read Catcher about 10 years or so ago and liked it but was so annoyed by Holden. Very curious what I'll think of it this time around. Have you ever reread a book that you loved the first time and hated it the second? 2y
vivastory Nothing comes to mind at the moment. It's very rare when I reread a book. What about you? 2y
readordierachel @vivastory Same. I was just thinking about how tastes change or evolve, so I wondered how common it is. But classics are classic for a reason I suppose 🙂, so the odds are in one's favor. 2y

It was a good selection of short stories. I love how open ended most of them are. I also love the fact the most of them have multiple interpretations. Two stories stuck out to me, "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "Teddy". Both have controversial and gory endings.

These are 9 stories with assortment of characters who are desperate, lonely, ignorant and heartbreaking. The stories are mostly episodes of happenings in a day, save for one which is a story within a story but all deal with human relationships, death, effects of war. They‘re heavily dialogued and endings are abrupt. Each story is powerful & worth reading but my favourites-A Perfect Day For Bananafish, For Esme, Pretty Mouth & Green Eyes and Teddy.

I think Salinger is one of those writers that if you read his work without knowing it was written by him you could guess it was his writing - very distinctive. The dialogue in this is real and so well written with interruptions and repetitions, and all the characters really come to life in just a few pages. Every story is good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DeborahSmall I watched the latest movie on Salinger last night: Rebel in The Rye, it was very good 2y

Melina: “Salinger is one of my favorite authors. This is a collection of short stories which is great for subway trips. You get brief glimpses into people‘s life. He‘s a slow writer and the story doesn‘t move too quickly so it feels like you are reading about these lives in real time. Things are moving so quickly and rapidly. It‘s important to find wholesome pockets of time and to enjoy being here rather than just rushing through.”
