This morning while getting ready to leave for work, I knew I‘d finish Mindhunter early in my shift. I brought a second book thinking that I need to take a break from true crime. I do. These books have me not wanting to sleep with my bedroom window. But at the same time I really want to read more haha. I‘m going to try to get through this one quick so that I can pick another serial killer to read (and have nightmares) about.

I found this very slow and not terribly satisfying. It felt like set-up for book three. We'll see. That's next on the list.

This is definitely just as amazing as I remember! I love this story and these characters so much, I can't really put it to words, so this review isn't my best 😅 But I thoroughly enjoyed it, just like when I was younger and read it for the first time!

I am still not over the way the second to last chapter ended. Everything that happened after, well I thought I was numb and nothing could rattle me, and I couldn't have been more wrong. Guess who is now immediately opening the next part.

That's like the worst most heart breaking way to kill beloved characters. ".... and then they died." Like damn it, they deserved more. And he didn't even get to have a reunion with Lyra!!

Even though this sequel entertained me, it bothered me. It kinda felt like it was having an identity crisis. The ending in particular sealed its fate that I highly doubt I will read book 3.

Tonton Read the third book! And the latest new one, it will give you a better view of the sequence😎 5mo

Hey everyone!! Anybody interested in playing a little game? #bookchain. You take the last letter of the book name or author and post a book with the name or author starting from that letter with the hash tag #bookchain tagging the person from whom you are continuing. Let's start with this book. Post a book whose name or author name is starting with N or P? And anybody or everybody following you can continue from there. You can even post twice.

The amount of God bashing and religion hating in this book really kept me from enjoying the story I do understand that it's fiction it just rubbed me the wrong way i want to rate them separately so I rate the book without the religion 5 stars with it about 3 I grew up on the church so I have a stronger connection or faith in it for those that don't I'm sure this book is fine. I'm going to read the 3rd to finish up the trilogy. I'm disappointed

hgrimes Just a warning...I have a feeling you‘re not going to like the third one! 9mo
Carolhreads @hgrimes me too :( I‘m reading the third one now it‘s not bad as far as the storyline goes when it doesn‘t involve the church or the authority and it‘s faster paced because it‘s only picking up where it left off, but the obsession with the church is just awful. 9mo
hgrimes @Carolhreads I personally loved this series, but I didn‘t grow up with a religious family, so I‘m sure my experience is totally different from yours. Pullman can be brutal about religion, and I completely understand how you‘d be bothered by some of the controversial themes. Good luck with the third one - I do hope you‘re able to enjoy it despite the religious critique! 9mo
Carolhreads @hgrimes it's a good story apart from the fact that he killed off my favorite character in this one :( and I'm about 50pages into the 3rd and its got a good swift moving flow to it which makes it easier to read because there is already a lot happening. :) 9mo
hgrimes @Carolhreads Hope you like it! I‘m interested to hear your thoughts either way! 😊 9mo

I finished listening to second book, narrated by Philip Pullman himself and cast in no time at all and immediately got the last book in the trilogy. Really enjoying the story and and the audio version brings it to life. I would say that the books are better suited to younger audiences and I'm a bit sad I didn't read them when I was younger but it is still enjoyable and worth reading/listening to.

I guess I'm old enough for fairy tales again because I love this series. Pullman has concocted a secular spirituality from art, literature, science, mythology, and philosophy. It's like an anti-authoritarian ethical atheism with phenomenal characters and astounding suspense. Haven't been hooked on a series like this since Lev Grossman's Magicians trilogy. Preparing myself for the battle in heaven. How was this off my radar for so long?

hgrimes I just finished this series and had the same sentiments. Sooo freaking good!! I haven‘t read the Magicians series yet, but I‘m planning to start it very soon! 2y

I still don't like it as much as The Golden Compass, but my second time reading this book I found myself much more engaged. A lot of big things happen off screen and none of the new characters are as compelling as the returning ones, but the larger story Pullman is telling really starts to take shape with this installment and the end certainly leaves you wanting to see where the story goes next. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not a fan of how Lyra gets sidelined so much in this book. I get that the narrative has expanded to more scenes where she isn't present (Lee Scoresby's quest, the witches, etc.), but in Lyra's story she spends too much time following and deferring to Will. Lyra Silvertongue shouldn't wait for permission from some boy she barely knows to do anything, much less consult her alethiometer. #NotMyLyra

Having moved on to The Subtle Knife, I feel like I'm officially committed to reading His Dark Materials as one long book (it helps that I have the omnibus edition of the trilogy). I usually like to space out books in a series to avoid fatigue, but The Golden Compass left me wanting more (much as La Belle Sauvage did before it), so I think I'm going to just keep on reading without my usual breaks between installments.

I‘m still really sick, and sacrificing my one and only sick day at work. 🙁 So I‘m home in my jammies watching BUB the Cat‘s yule log (I‘m so cat-deprived). I read book 1 of His Dark Materials a year ago and stopped, mainly because I hate small pocketbook editions. I had started reading the series in my teen years and quit in the middle probably for the same BS reasons. If my next attempt fails, I think I‘m just going to give in and buy new books!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Only one sick day? Sounds rough! Hope you are feeling much improved! 2y
AmyG Feel better! 2y
hgrimes @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Yep, sigh. I have only been at my job for ~3 months and I acquire 1 sick day/month, but I need to save at least 2 sick days for oral surgery next month. Fun times. I‘m still pretty cruddy, but slightly better than I was this morning I think. Hopefully I can pull off acting functional tomorrow! 2y

I was simultaneously desperate to carry on but worried that the second book wouldn't compare with the first but this one entranced me just as much as the first one. I found it to be an emotional roller coaster that kept me desperate for all details the book had to give and just letting Pullman's ever expanding and complexed world suck me further and further into it and due to the way it ended I'm now desperate to read the third book.
