Nothing to See Here
Nothing to See Here | Kevin Wilson
Kevin Wilsons best book yeta moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable and disturbing abilities Lillian has only exchanged the occasional letter with her friend Madison since their days as inseparable roommates at an exclusive boarding school, when out of the blue, Madison writes to ask Lillian for help. Her husbands career is about to take a major turn, just as his children from his first marriage are moving in with them; Madison wants Lillian take care of them. But, like most things with Madison, theres a catch. The twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated: flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but its the truth. Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each otherand stay coolwhile also staying out of the way of their buttoned-up, politician father. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lilian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need herurgently and fiercely. Couldnt this be the start of the amazing life shed always hoped for? With a white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written a most unusual story of deep parental love that proves to be his best book yet.

I‘ve been reading a lot of heavier books lately, and I wanted something different. I did not expect to love this one as much as I did. It‘s surprisingly sweet and wonderfully quirky. It made me laugh, and it made me tear up. I will definitely be reading more of his work!

I‘m not really “ doing this challenge”, but I noticed I‘ve filled in a few more states with some of the books I‘ve read recently, so I thought I‘d add them.
Nothing to See Here - Tennessee , Life and Afterlife of Harry Houdini -Wisconsin( where Houdini claimed he was from, but only lived there 4 years ) , Alice‘s Tulips - Iowa , The Glovemaker- Utah .
#ReadTheUSA2020
Who knows.... maybe I‘ll get it finished one of these days. It‘s ok either way.

TheAromaofBooks I'm enjoying filling them in without pressuring myself to complete them by a certain date. I just think it will be interesting to see how much of the country I've traveled by the end of the year!! 9h
ljuliel @TheAromaofBooks You‘ve got the right idea with it. I tend to put pressure on myself if I‘m in a challenge. I wasn‘t planning to do much with it this year, but looking through my past few books I‘ve read, then at my map, I thought I might as well fill in the slots. I‘m just going to read whatever strikes my fancy. If it‘s set in a missing state , I‘ll probably add it , but if not, it‘s ok. 😊 9h

I really wanted to like this book. I just didn‘t. To me it was a case of a man trying to write women characters that fell flat. I‘m just super disappointed.

What a delightful trip of a book- plenty of sass and swearing, and I loved it. Totally went into this blind knowing others had really enjoyed it and been surprised, and that‘s the way to do it. A bonkers tale, and I loved it.

This was close to a “pick” for me. I read this quick story of a woman hired to be a nanny to the children of a wealthy senator who just happen to set themselves on fire in an evening. It was fast-paced, funny, and well-written. But the end seemed a little too convenient. And I didn‘t fully buy into the nanny‘s actions and relationship with the kids. It was fun but not believable for me - and I‘m not talking about the fire kids. #tob2020 #tob

Surprising in the best way, I adored this story of the search for love and acceptance. The plot sounds completely ridiculous and yet it works in a clever and heartfelt way.
I also enjoyed listening to the author discuss the novel on the NPR Fresh Air podcast recently.

A spectacular yet quirky little story. The premise is fairly normal except that the 10-year-old twins spontaneously combust when they feel anxious or get emotional—it‘s sort of darkly funny. At its heart, this is a story about family and desperately wanting to feel less alone. Only Kevin Wilson could have written this. It reminded me of The Family Fang in several ways. The twist is so good!

Based on the premise of this book, I should have hated it... and yet, it just worked somehow! I‘m glad I took a chance after reading so many rave reviews. Lillian‘s life changes completely when she is suddenly confronted with the job of caretaker to two children... who spontaneously combust into flames 🔥🔥🔥 Written with humor and compassion, these characters are unexpectedly like-able.

This was one odd book. I‘m not even sure how to review it. There were good parts to the story, and really stupid parts. I guess I‘m not real good at reading about weird stuff that‘s just about impossible to ever happen, then make any sense out of it. I liked the interactions between the characters, but the Spontaneous Human Combustion , coming out completely uninjured , pushed the believability factor over a cliff. 3 ⭐️

Reviewsbylola I‘m currently reading this. Not entirely sure how I feel about it so far. 3w
ljuliel @Reviewsbylola It‘s a strange story. Hard to decide if I liked it or not. About 50/50, I think. 3w
Hooked_on_books I liked the weird stuff but found the book a little lacking. I did love the press conference scene, though. I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who didn‘t love it—I feel like everyone else did. 3w

Megabooks I‘m sorry you didn‘t enjoy it that much. The other authors I recommended are more rooted in reality. ☹️ 3w
ljuliel @Hooked_on_books Yes, it‘s sometimes a challenge to speak up against a book that others like. 3w
ljuliel @Megabooks - no worries. It‘s perfectly ok. Not your fault at all ! If you liked it , it‘s normal to recommend it to others. 😊 3w
Cathythoughts I‘m not really drawn to it .... very mixed reviews. I think I‘ll give it a miss for now 3w
Sace IMO I think ALL books should have mixed reviews because we're all different with different tastes. I often find too that when a book goes viral, I tend to build it up too much in my head and then I'm disappointed. I like when a book here has an average rating 😁 3w
ljuliel @Sace Sounds very sensible. Does it affect your interest in a book if you see mostly low ratings ? I think it does mine. 3w
Sace @ljuliel interesting question.... I think if I want it to affect my interest it does. But if I'm liking a book and no one else does it doesn't really matter to me. I'm reeeaallly cynical and that part of me sometimes thinks that thanks to social media and the hive mentality some books get more attention than they deserve (sounds very elitist and bitchy but I yam what I yam.) 3w
Sace But I admit that when I don't like a book everyone loves, I go looking for some negative reviews so I don't feel alone 😂 3w
ljuliel I think I‘m just pondering actually looking for a book to read, going into it without owning it, and without knowing much about it or the author. If I see mostly 1 or 2 star ratings, I‘m a lot less likely to pick it up. If I‘m already reading it and like it, then it doesn‘t matter to me if others didn‘t like it. @Sace (edited) 3w
Buechersuechtling @ljuliel For a long time I thought the weirder the plot the better or more “valuable” the story … But I think this disappeared with age. If the story feels too unreal and I feel like I can‘t connect, I will be bailing on the book. Last time this happened to me was with Patrick Ness‘ 🇩🇪„Die Nacht des Kranichs“ 🇬🇧”The Crane Wife” which was a very sad experience because I liked Patrick Ness so much. No I‘m unsure about his work for adults. 3w
ljuliel @Buechersuechtling I haven‘t read anything by that author, although I‘ve heard lots of people who really like his books. I think I prefer reading about an event that either could happen, or has happened. My brain isn‘t wired to read unbelievable stories. When I was a kid, I liked fairy tales with strange events , but it‘s hard for me to relate now. I think that‘s why Stephen King is a bit of a challenge. You have to suspend disbelief. 3w
Buechersuechtling @Sace You‘re so right‼️ I often feel similar when a book is mentioned everywhere or, to be more precise, I encounter it everywhere. Since Litsy is my only social network I might not be so prone. But _if_ I a book is hyped _and_ it‘s one I might like, too, I at first feel like I need to read it immediately and then, as time goes by, I postpone reading it for 1-3 years to be able to see what it‘s really like (without all the fuss). 3w
Sace @ljuliel yes, I'll definitely use bad reviews to help me curb my spending 😂 3w
Sace @ljuliel @Buechersuechtling I'm ok with weird. I like magical realism for example. Sometimes though I read books and it feels like the author is being weird just to be weird. It feels false somehow....like the author feels they have to be weird for it to be "literary". Like they don't want to write popular fiction. That annoys me. Am I making sense? 3w
Buechersuechtling @Sace Yes, perfectly. I just wonder if it‘s that “weirdness-just-for-being-weird”-kind that‘s that one often feeling strange and not-connectable to me. But I don‘t know. 3w
JulAnna What I appreciate here is the honest conversation about books, likes and dislikes. I find it more helpful than excessive praise and unwillingness to say something negative. What it helps me decide is whether to buy a book or look for it at my library. Thanks! 3w
ljuliel @JulAnna Welcome to the conversation. I like it too, when people can voice their opinions on a book without any sort of a ruckus. We are each searching for a book that will fit into a specific “slot” that is what we are trying to fill . I respect everyone‘s book selections, whether it‘s something I‘d like or not. They‘re choosing for themselves, not me. 😊 3w

#BookReport 52/19

This week I didn‘t have to work and was holidaying in France. We were with 4 families and were playing cards and other games all the time. I loved spending time with my kids, my man, our friends and their kids.

Still I managed to read these 5 books. I LOVED Nothing to See Here and Acid for the Children.

Suet624 @LauraBeth Really? It was a #TOB20 read. otherwise I might not have picked it up. I‘m glad I did. 3w

Suet624 @CherylRussell oh good!! 3w
LauraBeth It seems totally up my alley too but I‘ve noticed that a lot of bookstagram folks don‘t like it 😂 3w
Suet624 @LauraBeth Oh, I tried Bookstagram once and I never even noticed people wrote reviews. 3w
Leftcoastzen I haven‘t read this but adored 3w
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen thanks for tagging that book. As a result I just requested an interlibrary loan. 3w
Nute I‘ve seen good reviews/comments on Litsy. I wasn‘t interested until reading some of the reviews. 3w
kspenmoll Such a beautiful photo! Nice review! 3w
LauraBeth @Suet624 I had looked at it a couple of years ago and it was all knee socks and tea kettles 😂 I really started liking it this year though as I‘ve seen a big shift into more reviews and less pretentious pictures! 3w
Suet624 @LauraBeth is it like Litsy?? 3w
LauraBeth @Suet624 oh nothing compares to Litsy! 3w
BarbaraBB @LauraBeth Knee socks and latte art, that‘s how I still think of bookstagram 😂. I could give it another try but I spend so much time on Litsy already.. 3w
BarbaraBB Happy you liked the book too, Sue! Great review. Are you checking out his other books too already?! 3w
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I definitely don‘t need one more app to look at and I love Litsy. I was just wondering if people would leave Litsy to go to Bookstagram. And yes, I just requested another one of his books but it will take some time to get here from a different t library. 3w
BarbaraBB I stick to Litsy too! 💜 3w

Mehso-so

#UnpopularOpinion time! I love the premise of a book about children who spontaneously combust, and I loved Wilson‘s last book. But other than a plot point near the end that made me cackle, I was actually kinda bored reading this. 🤷🏼‍♀️

BarbaraBB Oh wow, really? And what book of his did you like? 3w
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB It‘s actually one that got a lot of mixed reviews: 3w

We‘ve all seen this disclaimer before. But at the beginning of a book with spontaneously combusting children? 🤨

Soubhiville 🤣 that‘s pretty funny. 3w
Lindy How‘s this for a disclaimer: “This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons or places past, present or future is purely coincidental and not intended. Everything we experience in life finds its way into memory and someday the sun will consume our entire planet.” In: 3w
Hooked_on_books @Lindy Fantastic! 😂 3w

Pickpick

I received this book in the #JolabokaflodSwap yesterday and although I did not finish it last night I did finish it today. Kevin Wilson has created real (weird) characters who deal with bad situations and, together, get it done. This book is sold as about twins who spontaneously combust and, yes, it is weird but it is also life affirming to that we are all odd in our own ways but we find our tribe and we survive. 5⭐️ set in TN @Chrissyreadit 💖

Omg you have completely spoiled me for this #CreepyChristmas swap @Gissy !!🤗

Stephen King is my favorite author and I just LOVE this tote bag, mug and print. It‘s getting framed and going on my wall!

All of the books look great, the socks are so soft and look really comfy, the ornament is adorable and perfect for me, and all of the gifts for Jace were so unexpected but absolutely perfect for him. Thank you so much!! 🤗❤️😘
