I don‘t think this book is for everyone. It‘s depiction of taxidermy is visceral (if you can‘t make it through chapter one, put it down.) It‘s a story full of broken messy people struggling, but I think those are the stories I like the most.

It took me a long time to read this, and I really wanted to like it more than I did. It excels as a Floridian novel, one that brings that very particular place alive. But unfortunately, in spite of being dark and visceral (things I usually love) the rest was just off the mark for me. I liked what I read, but felt there were too many missed opportunities to make this something exceptional. #indiebuddyreads

Redheadrambles @ClairesReads I think you are right on the money there. 2d

This story was just too relentlessly sad. The characters are all filthy, depressed, and passive-aggressive. They are grieving the death of their father and abandonment by a former lover. My biggest issue with the book is the lack of finesse. The reader is constantly hit over the head with repeated scenes that show just how sad and disgusting everything is. Yes - I got it! 2⭐️ #indiebuddyreads

Cinfhen Too bad, cover is JUST INCREDIBLE 5d
Redwritinghood @Cinfhen It is! Under the dust jacket it‘s that vibrant pink with silver lettering and black endpapers. It‘s a pretty wrapper for a book about a lot of ugly things. 5d

Just NO! This is a definite no for me. I did not like this book. Let me say I had no issue with the taxidermy or the suicide. But the descriptions about how dirty Jessa was were too much along with Brynn. There were too many details and not enough aha moments. The characters are all confused leaving the reader confused. Jessa treats her mother as a non person. She‘s sleeping with her brother‘s wife.

kindergartenkat I was wondering about your rating of this one. It‘s been on my TBR. I wondered why you didn‘t like it. I‘m glad you shared here! 1w
jb72 @kindergartenkat Yeah I was unsure how I was going to rate it at first (1 or 2 stars). I haven‘t really thought of my full review yet for GR. I normally don‘t like to “hate” on a book, but honestly this book is just not very good. 1w

I no longer drink soda, and if I did it would be Dr. Pepper.
I don‘t like cereal in any form.
Neither lemonade or limeade - citrus juice is not my thing.
Both for potato chips! I love chips.
No cereal at all.
I would say I prefer tater tots over waffle fries, but I like the waffles fries at Chick-Fil-A too.

⭐️⭐️ 1/2

Positives - lovely cover, interesting characters, Florida vibes.

Ultimately, though this is not my jam. One of my biggest hurdles was the focus on detailed description over narrative advancement. Whenever a character defining moment threatened to appear, the author would bury me in an avalanche of sensory details - stinky cushions, zits, dust and grime. I just don‘t need this hyper-real level of detail in my fiction.

This book is everything I hate about contemporary fiction-sad, miserable people with a plot that just drags out sordid details of their miserable lives. I feel dirty just having read it and in desperate need of a long, hot shower to scrub away the slime. I won‘t meet my #24b4monday goal of two library books, but I finished this one and am at 11 hours, so I‘ll be happy with that. Now, I‘ve got to find a rainbows & puppies book to clear my brain.

Andrew65 A shame about the book, you may not have hit your target but that is a great time. 👏👏👏👍 3w
DGRachel @Andrew65 Thanks! After a migrainey work week and sleeping almost all of Saturday, I‘m pleased with my total. I just can‘t start one of my other library books because they are all crime novels and I need something fun after that train wreck of a book. So, I‘m going to start the new Sarah MacLean and get in a couple more hours of reading time. 😊 3w
Andrew65 @DGRachel It‘s a truly great time given all of that! 👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌 3w
TheNerdyProfessor This was 3.5 star book for me. I finished it and enjoyed parts of it, but it was a bit slow. Also, I was very squeamish about all the taxidermy. 3w

While #Bailey nods off, I‘m going to start this library book. It‘s the only one whose check out I cannot extend because of the waiting list, so I need to read it first, even though I really want to read my new Sarah MacLean. We‘ll see how long my willpower holds. If this book doesn‘t grab me fast, I‘ll be switching! 😂

This was way too much for me, on many levels. The story centers on a family in the taxidermy business. While the taxidermy portion could have been quirky and interesting, it instead was incredibly graphic, and it felt like every other page had a graphic description of dissembling an animal. The family dynamics were interesting, but weren‘t really explored beyond a superficial level, and everyone‘s issues were centered almost exclusively on sex.

Megabooks Thank you for saving me time. I had been thinking about reading it, but it sounds exactly like the kind of book I hate. 3w
Ajessgirl @Megabooks You are very welcome! I thought it was going to be more Lauren Groff like, but it went way way over the top. 3w

Redheadrambles @ClairesReads indeed ! I am trying to get it read over the weekend.... at 150 or so and it‘s very atmospheric but I can‘t figure out where it‘s going. How are you finding it ? 3w
mklong Eek, all the talk of dirty, cluttered, living spaces has made me apprehensive. I can take all the sadness and death anyone can throw at me, but reading about a messy house gives me anxiety. 3w

Finished this fantastic book on this hot summer morning. Such a cathartic reading experience. Kristen Arnett does an amazing job of illustrating Jessa‘s slow process of dismantling her past and discovering herself. The taxidermy metaphor throughout is spot on and beautiful. ❤️

I saw this at an indie bookstore a couple weeks ago and thought it sounded hilarious, based on the jacket blurb. It wasn't hilarious. It was barely even remotely humorous in occasional wisps. Mostly, it was boring, repetitive, and dismal. A friend forewarned; but, I was determined to have a better experience (sometimes we agree on a book; sometimes one of us likes it much more than the other). Not this time, sadly.

Lauren.Archer I bailed on this one. 1mo

I finished this one out on the porch with Riley dog. It is certainly unique and taught me quite a bit about taxidermy. I am a bit squeamish and found parts of this a bit off-putting (I assume that is the point). Although this was described as funny, I found it to be more ironic than "ha ha" funny. It is also an LGBT read, which I liked. This did hold my attention, but I was ready for it to end when I got to the last page. A solid ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 for me.

I really enjoyed this. It‘s funny, sad and so human.
It‘s been in the upper 90‘s and humid, so I felt like I was in Central Florida instead of L.A. An immersive reading experience. If you want to go all in, read this while drinking the cheapest beer you can find! 🍻

Mostly Dead Things is a weird and funny and sad book about grief and family, with one of the strongest senses of place (taxidermy in swampy hot Florida!) that I‘ve read in a long long time. It‘s also fantastically queer, in an uncomfortable “I see myself in this, it‘s too good, make it stop” kind of way. I would read it all over again, right now.
