The Printed Letter Bookshop
The Printed Letter Bookshop | Katherine Reay
Amid literature and lattes, three women come together and find that sharing one’s journey with best friends makes life richer. When attorney Madeline Carter inherits her aunt’s bookstore in a small town north of Chicago, she plans to sell it and add the proceeds to her nonexistent “investment portfolio.” But plans change when Madeline discovers the store isn’t making money and she gets passed over for promotion at her firm. She quits in protest, takes the train north, and decides to work at the store to prep it for sale. Madeline soon finds herself at odds with employees Jessica and Courtney; when she also finds herself attracted to an affianced man, it only confuses the entire situation. After blowing up her marriage two years earlier, Jessica has found solace working at the bookstore and a kindred spirit within its owner, Maddie Cullen. But when Maddie dies and her niece, Madeline, barges in like a bulldozer, Jessica pushes at the new owner in every way—until she trips over common ground. Soon the women are delving into online dating and fashion makeovers, and Jessica feels the pull to rediscover her art, a love she thought long behind her. After a night of bad decisions leaves the store in peril, Courtney arrives and tries to save the day. While she, too, found sanctuary in the little bookstore, she knows it’s under-insured, in the red, and will never survive. When she discovers her teenage daughter has played a part in vandalizing the store, Courtney taps into strength she didn’t know existed—or had long forgotten. The quietest of the three, she steps up and finds a way to save her family, the store, and the precious friendships that have grown within it. The Printed Letter Bookshop is the story of friends who find each other—and themselves—in a place none of them ever expected.

Mehso-so

I wanted to like this book about 3 women trying to run a bookshop and learning about friendship along the way, but I really just found it to be only okay. This is mainly because the women aren‘t drawn finely enough to make them completely distinct characters, and some of the elements of the plot are predictable.

Lova Thanks for the heads up- I was about to add it to my list but maybe I‘ll wait. 1d
KathyWheeler @Lova I don‘t like to discourage anyone from reading something they might enjoy, and I didn‘t hate it — I‘m just glad I got it from the library. 1d

I think my problem is that I‘m listening to instead of reading this book, but I‘m having a little trouble keeping the three main characters apart in my head. Finally, at 3 hours in, they are beginning to separate out.

SW-T I read it and it was still tricky to keep them separated. 5d
KathyWheeler @SW-T Good to know. Sometimes I‘m not sure if a problem is a problem with the book or with the format. 5d
wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 A great day! 5d

SW-T I read it in ebook format...there were character headings (tiny, but there). Still had to double check to see who was who. Normally not an issue for me. Oh...and great job on your workout! 🙂 5d
KathyWheeler @SW-T in the audiobook, they say the character‘s name as a headings, but sometimes I don‘t hear it. Thanks! 5d
BookwormAHN Great job 👏🏻 5d
Kaye Beautiful hydrangeas. 🌺 4d
KathyWheeler @Kaye They are all over campus too, making it really pretty. Most of them are blue, but there are some pink ones too. 4d

KathyWheeler @Caterina Yes, it is. 😊 7d
wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 And I miss living near beaches with sand. The beaches up here in WA state just aren‘t the same. 7d

wanderinglynn It‘s beautiful! But the beaches are rocks, not sand. I honk there‘s one sand beach around here (at least that I know of). 6d
BethM Good job! How‘s the book? It sounds interesting! 6d
KathyWheeler @BethM it seems good so far, but I‘m only a couple of chapters in. 6d

⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a book about women. How we struggle, how we plan, how our plans go awry, how we stand fast against the trials of our lives, how we come through those trials stronger, how we count on family and friends, and how we sometimes use and abuse those relationships. Good story.

The Printed Letter Bookshop is my first read of a Katherine Reay novel & I am blown away, so much so I bawled in my kitchen like a baby when I read the final word on the last page. This novel was the cathartic read I didn‘t even know I needed. The characters in The Printed Letter Bookshop are wonderfully crafted. This is a story about dynamic women living life as honestly and honorably as they can. The Printed Letter Bookshop is phenomenal.

Princess-Kingofkings I bought this at Baker on Friday. 3w

This is a sweet novel about love, friendship, family, and the transformative power of books. I fell in love with the novel‘s characters, and with the titular bookshop (now I totally want to run a bookshop of my own!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tamra If I didn‘t have to make money, it‘s the first thing I‘d do! 😆 1mo

I‘m up earlier than expected for a Saturday and the rest of my family is still asleep. I‘m taking advantage of the quiet by having a lazy start to my day. My early start does call for a supersize mug of tea ☕️

This book is delightful so far! I mean, what‘s not to love about a book that centres around a bookshop?

"The Printed Letter Bookshop is a captivating story of good books, a testament to the beauty of new beginnings, and a sweet reminder of the power of friendship.” —Rachel McMillan, author of Murder in the City of Liberty

There was a lot going on in this one. It centers around 3 women (and one in absentia...everyone needs an Aunt Maddie) and is told in alternating chapters by them. The bookshop itself becomes its own character as they live and learn through the wisdom from beloved books, their past mistakes and their friendship. And for bibliophiles, there are 70 books alluded to throughout the book. 😊 Enjoyable read. 4/5⭐️

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair review. This book was a heartwarming delight and a change from my usual thriller/darker reading choices. If you love books/bookshops/people focused feel good books this is definitely one to add to your TBR. I loved getting to know these 3 ladies, what made them tick and how a wise old Aunt uses her love of books to bring her estranged niece right back to where she needs to be. 💜💜
