Before She Knew Him
Before She Knew Him: A Novel | Peter Swanson
113 posts | 78 read | 1 reading | 77 to read
Catching a killer is dangerous—especially if he lives next door From the hugely talented author of The Kind Worth Killing comes an exquisitely chilling tale of a young suburban wife with a history of psychological instability whose fears about her new neighbor could lead them both to murder . . . Hen and her husband Lloyd have settled into a quiet life in a new house outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Hen (short for Henrietta) is an illustrator and works out of a studio nearby, and has found the right meds to control her bipolar disorder. Finally, she’s found some stability and peace. But when they meet the neighbors next door, that calm begins to erode as she spots a familiar object displayed on the husband’s office shelf. The sports trophy looks exactly like one that went missing from the home of a young man who was killed two years ago. Hen knows because she’s long had a fascination with this unsolved murder—an obsession she doesn’t talk about anymore, but can’t fully shake either. Could her neighbor, Matthew, be a killer? Or is this the beginning of another psychotic episode like the one she suffered back in college, when she became so consumed with proving a fellow student guilty that she ended up hurting a classmate? The more Hen observes Matthew, the more she suspects he’s planning something truly terrifying. Yet no one will believe her. Then one night, when she comes face to face with Matthew in a dark parking lot, she realizes that he knows she’s been watching him, that she’s really on to him. And that this is the beginning of a horrifying nightmare she may not live to escape. . .

This one was good, but not great. It was a quick and enjoyable read, but I figured it out quite early. Trust me when I tell you that I almost never figure out twists in books and movies. I kept hoping for more or that I was wrong, but I wasn‘t.

marleed Yesterday I read the book, The Girl He Used to Know. It‘s completely unrelated to this book. But for some reason I can‘t keep the two titles straight in my head! 3d
Melwilk @marleed They are very similar titles. I have a difficult time sometimes keeping the books I read straight too. 3d

Meh. I figured out the big twist pretty early on and the only reason I finished the book was to prove myself right. I‘m not a fan of “mental illness = unreliable” plots and thought the story was beyond ridiculous. But it was a quick read and not excruciatingly written, so 👍🏼👍🏼.

This was a fun, fast paced summer thriller. It kept my interest, although I wouldn‘t rank it as high as Swanson‘s first two books. There‘s not much mystery—the reader pretty much finds out the major plot points immediately, but the psychological impact is more intricate and there was one twist that I didn‘t see coming at all!

I loved the beginning of this one. The way he writes about mental illness felt nuanced in a way that is rare in thrillers. There‘s maybe a few too many twists at the end, but overall I liked it a lot.

This was just barely a pick for me. I loved "The Kind Worth Killing" by this author, so much so that I keep reading his other books. The first half of this one kind of read like 'one time at band camp' in that it seemed like the author was in a rush to get to writing the good part. The second half was better, more developed, but predictable. A good choice if you don't want to think too much about the mystery you're reading.

This was a creepy thriller intriguing me to keep reading so I could watch the story unfold.

And now I must go to Goodreads and research the author. Just how much younger than I is the author who writes a sidebar to justify his protagonist owning a landline phone!?

8little_paws Did you read this in print or audio? Wondering how it would be on audio 2mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @8little_paws I listened on audio! It was pretty good on audio. There was only one moment at the towards the very end that I felt confused, but I think it might have also been confusing in print. The narrator is fairly solid. 2mo

I thought that this was a little bit predictable which was a bit disappointing for me, but overall I really liked it. The story kept me interested until the end and I really liked the characters in this. Lots of twists and it was suspenseful. I enjoyed this thriller.

Tadams4 Such a wonderful review! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks Every time I read one of Swanson's books, I can barely put it down when I'm reading it. Then, when I'm finished, I realize that he actually used loads of coincidences and I didn't really like any of the characters and I kinda already knew how it was going to end... but when I'm actually reading them, they are sooo addictive! 2mo
Victoriahoperose Thank you @Tadams4 ! @TheAromaofBooks I agree with you. I did like the characters, but I definitely found it predictable. 2mo

2019 Book 21: well I‘m not quite sure how to review this book. I did like the plot twist. I have to say I didn‘t see that coming. The characters were creepy though, and I don‘t like the subject of torture, so that was a bit off-putting for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think this was my first Peter Swanson. Well-plotted thriller. Even if you guess the twist, the behavior of the characters holds true. 🎧 Sophie Amos & Graham Halstead do a really nice job narrating. Amos has the bulk of the #audiobook — good characterizations & pacing.

I really enjoyed this novel about a young wife and artist who just moved to a new home and is convinced her next door neighbor is a murderer. Really liked the tension between the characters, don‘t wanna reveal too much of the plot bc it does have a few well placed twists.

When I was *almost* done with this book, I was thinking that what made this book so interesting was the we knew the whole time the fact that you would expect to be the twist, so it wasn‘t a matter of figuring it out but rather of waiting for everyone else to figure it out.

Except that I was completely wrong and this book is excellent.

This was a good read with very captivating content and lots of unseen twists and turns. I could feel the personal struggle that Hen was grappling with the whole story. How it feels when you are telling the truth and no one believes you.

*not a spoiler don't worry!* this book is uncomfortable to read, but so good. There's some gross stuff that made me concerned the author was some creep, but it turns out he is actually pretty woke. I love creepy books and anything about murder (watching criminal minds has changed me) and i can't stop reading this one. Should finish tonight☺️
