Saint Mazie
Saint Mazie: A Novel | Jami Attenberg
Meet Mazie Phillips: big-hearted and bawdy, she's the truth-telling proprietress of The Venice, the famed New York City movie theater. It's the Jazz Age, with romance and booze aplenty--even when Prohibition kicks in--and Mazie never turns down a night on the town. But her high spirits mask a childhood rooted in poverty, and her diary, always close at hand, holds her dearest secrets. When the Great Depression hits, Mazie's life is on the brink of transformation. Addicts and bums roam the Bowery; homelessness is rampant. If Mazie won't help them, then who? When she opens the doors of The Venice to those in need, this ticket taking, fun-time girl becomes the beating heart of the Lower East Side, and in defining one neighborhood helps define the city. Then, more than ninety years after Mazie began her diary, it's discovered by a documentarian in search of a good story. Who was Mazie Phillips, really? A chorus of voices from the past and present fill in some of the mysterious blanks of her adventurous life.Inspired by the life of a woman who was profiled in Joseph Mitchell's classic Up in the Old Hotel, SAINT MAZIE is infused with Jami Attenberg's signature wit, bravery, and heart. Mazie's rise to "sainthood"--and her irrepressible spirit--is unforgettable.

An author was behaving poorly on GR today. I myself have had one distinct unpleasant interaction with an author on GR & it seems like this is becoming more common. Several authors weighed in, all advising against invading a reviewer's space. Had to post the above from Attenberg's thread 😂

Scochrane26 An author I met a few years ago said she had to give up being on GR after her book came out. Her book is great, but of course, there‘s always going to be some negative reviews. 3y
vivastory @Scochrane26 It bothers me when I see an author commenting a lot on their book page. Even if they are trying to be helpful, I think it's too easy to cross a line & knowing that they monitor it makes it seem like less of a space where people can be honest 3y
Scochrane26 @vivastory I only follow a couple of authors on there & don‘t look at their pages. I agree though-I know it‘s unfair to say they need to give up GR, but it might be better for them. I follow authors on insta & think that‘s a better place for them. 3y
See All 40 Comments
wanderinglynn No good can come from interacting with a reviewer. I agree that authors should avoid GR. There are better forums for interacting with readers. 3y
KatieDid927 Oh man, now I wanna know which book and author it was! 3y
vivastory @KatieDid927 She went off on someone who gave her a 4 star rating 🙄🙄 3y
Texreader @vivastory Good golly! It seems to me once an author puts their name out there, they‘ve got to understand that not everyone is gonna like what they do or think it‘s 5 stars! But I‘m an attorney so I‘m kinda used to opposing attorneys not liking me and sometimes despising me. It‘s in the job description 😉 I had an author “report” me to Amazon for writing a less than stellar review of a poor book once. I quit posting my reviews there. 3y
Amiable Sheesh, this author would hate me —I almost never give 5 stars. In my mind, that‘s a rare, super-special book —I might award 5 stars a grand total of three times in a year (and that‘s a good year). The majority of my reviews are 3 and 4 stars. To me, those are decent reads that I liked (3) or really liked (4). What‘s wrong with that? 3y
Palimpsest I give books I absolutely love five stars. Books that made me feel emotion, taught me something about the world or myself, usually has exceptional writing, or that I know I‘d read again or recommend. A four star from me means I think it was pretty great, but something about it didn‘t put me into that giddy delight that a five star book does. Everyone has a different rating system. Four stars from me is really solid. I don‘t get it. @vivastory 3y
EKonrad Now I don‘t want to read her book. She definitely should have thought about how off-putting those negative comments would be to potential readers. 3y
vivastory @Texreader That's wild! I keep hearing about reviewers not tagging authors in negative reviews, which is understandable, but it seems like some authors are incredibly thin skinned 3y
vivastory @Amiable @Palimpsest I agree! I give maybe 3 books a month 5 stars. The majority of my books are rated 3-4 stars. I don't understand why people think a 4 star rating is a bad rating. It's really really good! 3y
vivastory @EKonrad She was bombed with 1 star rating afterwards. To try to save face she claims that she was high when she was harassing the reviewer 🙄 3y
SamAnne I really try to limit my 5 star reviews too....I want it to mean something! I‘m also uncomfortable with authors pitching their own books, giving themselves reviews on GR. (edited) 3y
vivastory @SamAnne Yeah, the reviewing your own book. Never understood that... 3y
Megabooks Lol!! 😂😂 3y
Megabooks @Amiable that‘s why I think stars are only useful to your own records. We live in such an era of immediately giving the best rating that I rarely trust random people‘s star ratings and why I rarely put stars in my litsy reviews. 3y
vivastory @Megabooks I agree, although I do wish the Litsy rating had more nuance. 3y
LeahBergen 4-stars is a really good rating. Wtf? That‘s just bizarre. 3y
KatieDid927 Thanks, I did a deep dive and YIIIIIIIIKES. This has def started to become a thing but this is by FAR the worst I‘ve seen. She posted it to Twitter?! That‘s targeted harassment. Over a 4⭐️ review?! I was interested in this book, but now it‘s a hard pass. Public scrutiny is hard! So maybe just write for yourself and don‘t publish? I dunno. Yikessss. 3y
Megabooks Oh gosh, I just picked up this book this morning! I‘m thinking of returning it now. The first essay wasn‘t even that good! 3y
Megabooks Just called audible and returned it. Glad she won‘t have my money!! 3y
rwmg @SamAnne I was surprised to see an author I liked was reviewing his own books on LT. I stopped reading him after that. 3y
allureofbeauty Which author? Now I need to know lol 3y
allureofbeauty Oh I see where it was linked thank you 3y
Velvetfur Wow, I can't believe what I'm reading here! I have a GR account but don't use it so I didn't know about this. Anyone who puts something out in public, whether a book or a film or music, has to expect that not everyone is going to love it, how arrogant to expect otherwise! Thanks for highlighting this, I'm going to have a look at the book you tagged now 😂 3y
Michael_Gee Whoa whoa whoa. This is a fascinating thread and YIKES LH needs a lesson on responsible social media engagement. That is something agents should cover with new authors! I don‘t like that people who haven‘t read her book are giving it 1 star “reviews.” Some posted “blacklisted” or “nope” which doesn‘t appear to be a review, so if you can do that, why leave a “review”? (I don‘t use Goodreads, this is an actual question) 3y
Scochrane26 @GhostStories I just looked the book up, & I think people are leaving reviews to tank her rating. Looks like her ratings were good before this incident. Roxane Gay gave it 5 stars a few months ago. Now her rating is 1.72. Love some controversy in the book world! 3y
vivastory @GhostStories I agree that if you haven't read the book you probably shouldn't rate it or leave a review. I do think that a book page should have somewhere for users to interact with their feedback & comments without it impacting the overall rating but GR is notoriously outdated. I'm always a bit surprised when I see that authors monitor GR so closely just bc of what a strange platform it is. Some users interact on there as a book community 3y
Sweetkokoro @GhostStories I don‘t like it either but with more authors having the audacity to come into reviewers spaces and attack them because they don‘t like their review, purposely tanking that authors GR score is in reviewers minds the best way to get the authors to know they won‘t be treated that way. Publishers pay attention to GR scores so this is how some reviewers speak up when one has been publicly attacked. It‘s a vicious cycle 3y
vivastory @GhostStories (cont.) some leave reviews but don't really interact, some just try to obtain ARCS & some use it to document their reading. I'm mostly in the latter category. I know a lot of readers look at the overall rating of a book on GR when deciding whether to read a book, but it's such an unusual platform that this always surprises me a bit. 3y
Reggie @GhostStories @vivastory lololl this is a little late but last night I wasn‘t really wanting to go do cardio but I watched this video which was about this controversy but it made me laugh so hard I got ready. Give it a shot. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tvDHrH-9VBk 3y
Amiable @Megabooks Yes—and this is also why I only read the 2, 3, and 4 star reviews when I‘m deciding whether to buy a book. There are people who rate everything they ever finish with 5 stars. And like it‘s been pointed out, there are others who give 1 star when they haven‘t read it at all. I sort through the comments from those in the middle because it gives me a way better sense of whether the book is something that would appeal to me. ⬇️ (edited) 3y
Amiable And also—my star ratings in GR are for my use! I‘ve been keeping track of my reads on GR for 10 years now. I rate a book so I can remember what I thought of it when I‘m debating another one by that same author. For example, every time I pick up a book by Lisa Scottoline, the back blurb sounds tempting. Then I check GR and see that I‘ve read 3 of her books already and rated them all 2 stars. And then I put it down and move on to another author. 3y
Megabooks @Amiable I also keep track of stars in my personal ratings. I was doing it in the notes app on my phone. Now I do it on the storygraph, which allows decimal points!!! 3y
Amiable @Megabooks Is that an app? I like being able to look things up on my phone when I‘m shopping. 3y
Megabooks @Amiable it is an app (and a website, but I mainly use the app because it is waaayy better than GR‘s app) and they have instructions on how to import your goodreads! https://www.thestorygraph.com (edited) 3y
vivastory @Reggie I just watched it & 😂 😂 That's kind of what happened to me. An author messaged me & lectured me about rounding up my rating on GR. I typically use GR for just documenting the books that I read. In this particular instance I did not tag the author or say anything on social media about reading it aside from rating it. It left such an unpleasant taste that it will probably be a lot longer before I read another one of the author's books. 3y
marleed I gave a 3-star GR review to Rachel Hollis‘ first book. I had just started using GR to document my books. Whoever manages her account replied to me and called me a Twit. I was so embarrassed that I deleted reference to reading her book. Now I wish I would have taken a screenshot! I picked up her next book in a LFL, but I‘ve never read it and need to donate those books. 3y

Here‘s my “list” for the February #bookspin challenge hosted by @TheAromaofBooks ! I‘m no stranger to “reading at random,” so I‘m happy to lazily narrow the field to this shelf of A authors and read at random in good company in February. 😀 Imagine numbers left to right - 1 is Say You‘re One of Them and 20 is The Blind Assassin. She‘s not drawing a number til the weekend, so still plenty of time to join in and tackle your TBR!

TheAromaofBooks Glad I'm not the only person who can literally just take a picture of a shelf and be ready! *facepalm* Thanks so much for joining, and I'll be sure to tag you with the winning number on Sunday!! 😁 4y
LeafingThroughLife @TheAromaofBooks The terrifying part is that I could probably do this with a different shelf every month of this year....without repeating. 😬 4y
TheAromaofBooks When I started book blogging circa 2012 I decided I was going to read every book that I own - I've picked up a LOT of books at book sales and off the library discard shelf and that sort of thing over the years, a sort of “who cares, it's a quarter, it's probably good“ attitude that has led to over a thousand books around here. Point is, now it's 2020 and I still have around 700 left! 😝 4y

If HF is your jam and you love reading about early 1900s NYC this book will definitely appeal to you. While I enjoyed the story, I never grew connected to Maize and this book always lingered at meh/ ok but never wow or great. I wonder if the mockumentary style hindered my attachment?! It was well done but had an air of disconnection. A pick but #MoreMehThanYeah

Based on some bookish love from @vivastory and the fact that I‘ve had this book on my shelf for ages, I picked it up yesterday. Halfway through, it doesn‘t feel like an Attenberg novel, I‘m getting more of an Alice Hoffman vibe 🤷🏼‍♀️And some Daisy Jones too😉

I loved the story of an unlikely hero, Saint Mazie, told through diary excerpts and interviews. She watched life pass her by as she worked in a ticket booth in NYC during the 20‘s and 30‘s. She found love in the most unlikely places but could never quite hold on to it. So she took the bums, the victims of the depression, under her wing and made them her passion.

Reviewsbylola I liked the format of this one! 4y

I read somewhere recently that "work is the furniture of novels," Attenberg puts the career of her eponymous character in center by focusing a significant amount of the narrative at her job. I thought Mazie was a great character & I loved reading about this era (Jazz Age NY). Thinking about it, I also more than likely had a soft spot for Mazie, because my first job was at a movie theater. Leaving work reeking of popcorn & soda stained shirt. ?

vivastory #HardDaysNight indeed. I have not yet read "Daisy Jones & the Six," but I would imagine this would appeal to fans of Reid's novel. Attenberg utilizes an oral history approach in her book & Mazie is a strong & memorable female character. #AnglophileApril @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi @Cinfhen 5y
Rachel_nyc I loved Saint Mazie and thought she was a fantastic character. I think this book deserves a lot more attention than it seems to get. It only has about 5000 ratings in GR. (edited) 5y

I read this based on @L_auren ‘s review. I can see why she loved it so much. Mazie is a very relatable character despite, or maybe because of, her flaws. The diary format worked well and I liked the interjections from others that broke it up a bit. The “historian” researching Mazie‘s life was so obscure though, and I couldn‘t tell if she was just a plot device to tell the story or if she meant more. Also thanks to @Mdargusch for the bookmark!

A compulsively readable historical fiction book based on the life of a real woman, Mazie Gordon-Phillips. I was enthralled with the character of Mazie and the NYC setting from the start. Mazie is tough but kindhearted as she manages a movie theater and the homeless of the depression. I liked how the narrative wasn't straightforward. It includes excerpts from Mazie's diary and a frame story involving interviews in a pseudo-documentary style.

This story is told through Mazie's diary & interviews of the people who knew her. I'm not normally a fan of that format but in this case it really worked for me. Admittedly, about 200 pages in I was liking the book just fine but that's it. The last 130 pages or so made me love it though. The end left me feeling melancholy but in a good way, if that's possible? I think this one will stick with me for a bit. (I also really love the cover!).

Attenberg's titular character is funny, no-nonsense, independent & empathetic. An oral history & character study of a fictional character who feels convincingly real. Mazie's voice is straightforward & unadorned. The book spans thirty years, from being rescued from an abusive father by her older sister to her love affairs, and charity work for the homeless while running a movie theater. There is a strong sense of place. NYC is a character 👇

Halfway done and am enjoying the contrast between those who travel and find life there vs Maize who is trapped, yet finds life where she is. Really liking the diary style. Bonus points for it being based on a real person. Double bonus points- you can eat at Saint Maize's in Brooklyn.

Reviewsbylola I'm really looking forward to this one. I didn't love All Grown Up but this seems more up my alley. 7y
NerdyRev @Reviewsbylola I wasn't thrilled with All Grown Up either, but am enjoying this a lot more. Maize is a pistol who makes mistakes, but works through them 7y

Waited awhile to read this one after loving The Middlesteins so much. It was worth the wait to meet feisty and fierce Mazie and her ticket booth on the Bowery during the Depression (pictured here with Buster Keaton)

Reviewsbylola Looking forward to this one! 7y

Who lives?
Who dies?
Who tells your story?

"The younger ones still have a chance to change their lives, and I'll lend them a hand if they like. But too many of the older men, they've been on the road so long they wouldn't know what to do with a proper home if they had one. The concrete feels right under their bodies. Their discomfort has become their comfort. "

In honor of #internationalwomensday, this #recommendsday I am recommending Saint Mazie by Jami Attenberg. This was the first Attenberg I read and it pulled my heartstrings so hard I thought I would never recover.

Reviewsbylola I can't wait to try her out. I just got All Grown Up from BOTM. 7y

Well, I had a slow last week, but a big month for reading! 23 books-12 print, 11 audio. Having the readathon definitely helped, but I also read a lot of shorter YA books. Faves were: Saint Mazie, Still Life with Tornado, City of Thieves, All the Bright Places, and The Call; I had a lot of great books this month!!

Karkar Awesome! 7y

So delicious. Really makes you think about the history of a place and the people time forgets.
