Thank you @Suet624 so much for sending me this book! Sometimes the experiences we have when we‘re young hold on to us much longer than we think they ever could. A coming of age story of a boy in small town Australia set in the 60s-70s against the backdrop of surfing and the most wonderful nature writing you‘ll ever read. I‘m in New Mexico but for a day I heard the roar of the ocean, smelt the salt of the sea, and felt the sand between my toes. 🌊

CarolynM I really must read this one day🙄😬 3y
Reggie It‘s good! But sad. I had heard of Tim Winton but never read him. But if I were to ever come across another book of his I would snatch it up. I also think since you live in Australia you would appreciate this. @CarolynM I was just excited because there was mention of a lamington cake and because I‘ve watched Zumba‘s Just Desserts I knew what they were. Lol 3y
Centique @Reggie @carolynm lamingtons were my favourite as a kid - now they‘re my son‘s favourite 😍 I have a Tim Winton to read soon, this review makes me excited about it. 3y

Reggie @Centique Lol, if there were lamingtons at the high tea I would definitely be there. His writing is great. I don‘t know how he made each wave sound unique and so real but he did. 3y
CarolynM I have mixed feelings about Tim Winton. I couldn't get past 50 pages of Cloudstreet which a lot of people love, but I liked The Turning and Dirt Music a lot. By the way, don't say "lamington cake", they're just lamingtons (or lammos?) The ones my grandmother used to make were the best, but even supermarket ones will do @Centique 3y
Reggie @CarolynM 😊noted. 🍰 3y
Centique @Reggie @CarolynM one day when I win Lotto I‘ll buy Reggie a plane ticket Down Under and there will definitely be lamingtons here and pavlova for you - and you can go visit Carolyn and see what those Aussie beaches are really like 😍 3y
Reggie @Centique❤️ 3y
CarolynM You would be very welcome here, and of course, but I can't recommend the Melbourne beaches- there's not much surf in Port Phillip Bay😂 @Centique 3y
Cathythoughts ❤️❤️❤️😁 3y
Suet624 I‘m so glad you enjoyed it so much! 3y
Rissreads Come to Perth! The beaches are gorgeous here! I loved this book and I love Tim Winton. ❤️ 3y

A coming of age story about surfing, fear, adventure and heartache. A teenager meets Sando, a renowned surfer, and his wife. Sando becomes his mentor. The first half was filled with fantastic writing about the ocean, about learning to navigate waves, and stretching yourself. Nature was in the forefront. The second half took a dark turn and our teenager, now an adult, continues to live with the repercussions. October #bookspin

kspenmoll I hope you had a moment to breathe in between your voting work. Nice review. 💙💚❤️ (edited) 3y

Suet624 @saresmoore Do you remember if you gave me this book? 3y
Suet624 @JanuarieTimewalker13 Hahaha. Yup. Definitely Australia. 3y
Suet624 @kspenmoll I did! This was also a very quick and easy read. No big thinking involved. :) 3y
saresmoore I don‘t remember for sure, but I don‘t think so. 😅 I have it on my shelf still waiting to be read and your review encourages me to do so! 3y
Nute Gosh! You really made me want to read this book especially to experience what the first half of the book has to offer. Stacking! 3y
Reggie Ummm can I just tell you that this book is not going where I expected it to go. I thought Loonie was gonna die doing the Nautilus and we‘d get thrust into why he became a paramedic. But I am now at the erotic asphyxiation portion of this book. Lol, Jesus, I didn‘t see any of this coming. Thank you for the book by the way! 😊 3y
Suet624 @Reggie I know, right????? By the way, the movie is on Netflix. Simon Baker plays Sando. It‘s pretty good. 3y

Just finished this book by Tim Winton today.
A young boy living & loving the surf, befriends a couple who live near their favourite surf beach.
He and his mate are storing their boards under their house so they get to know this couple, a little more intimately than expected.
Coming of age & life lessons about fear & the common thread through much of Wintons work, life & the holding & taking of a breath.
On the hunt for the movie of the same name.

Cooking some indian dishes tonight whilst listening to Breath

Spiced Potato Samosas 😁😁😁

Making my way through a lot of Tim Winton's books this year. Very calming listening to his poetic style of writing and picturing the beaches of Western Australia even though I've never been there.

MrsMalaprop How I love him. Depicts WA so well. I really liked the movie adaptation of this one too. 4y
Oblomov26 Have only really been to the tourist bits of WA but well worth a visit. 4y
Freespirit I love his books also! 4y

Curiouser_and_curiouser @MrsMalaprop oh, I had no idea there was a movie, must search for it, thanks so much 🏖🌞⛱ 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Oblomov26 cool, ok, thanks for the tip. I have never actually considered WA as a destination before but I do know quite a few people who are from WA and have moved here to Melbourne, Victoria. Maybe one day but I'd have to convince hubby first as I'm not going alone. We like road trips so I'm looking forward to becoming a grey nomad in a decade or so, hopefully then 😉 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Freespirit yeah, me too. I am appreciating them more as I read each one. They have a lovely mood about them. 4y

The first half of this book was a sensory feast! Tim Winton has a way of describing an environment so you can smell, hear and feel it.
I enjoyed being immersed in the sea and feeling the fear, anticipation, joy, rush and thrill of it.
It took a different turn around half way through, which is fine. But I kinda wish it didn‘t. I liked it as it was.
The ending left me feeling indifferent - a shame since I loved the beginning.

LapReader The movie is great. 4y
Messiejessie Thanks- Good to know! I didn‘t even know there was a movie, I‘ll check it out. 4y

15 books this month (thanks, quarantine). But of that, only 1 of those books was by an author of color, which is such a small percentage. It made me realize how very white my TBR is. Will aim to diversify.

Another book I picked up because I desperately miss the ocean and surfing right now. Although it‘s uncomfortable at times, this is a very well written book that captures the addiction of thrill in its beautiful and ugly ways. This one is going to sit with me for awhile. I‘m looking forward to checking out the film adaptation.

Breath is set in the wild west of Australia. It is narrated by Bruce Pike, a divorced, middle aged paramedic and takes the form of a long flashback in which he remembers his childhood friendship with Ivan ‘Loonie‘ Loon. #wildwildwest #heatofjuly

I‘d somehow forgotten just how wonderful Winton‘s descriptive prose is. The sense of time and place he creates is as good as that of any writer. Long hot Australian summers, and boys searching to be anything but ordinary men like their fathers. For me this is a 5 star book, and Dan Wyllie‘s narration is the cream on top 🤘🏽

Redheadrambles Ah yes I love this book as well ! 6y

This was my first by Winton, and did I ever love the writing! In sentences that spark and burst, he tells the story of two Australian teen boys' enmeshment with an older hippie couple. I'd have thought the surfing scenes would bore me to tears: in fact, they were exquisite. The sharp turn near the end of the story was jarring, and a little disappointing. But still a rich, rewarding 4-star read. I am eager to read a lot more by him.

Abailliekaras One of my favourite of Tim Winton's books! 👌 7y

In Australian English, I have just learned, a 'bombora' is a wave which forms over a submerged offshore reef or rock, sometimes breaking heavily and producing a dangerous stretch of broken water.

andrew61 @DeborahSmall thanks im popping to the library at lunch so ill have a look 7y
andrew61 @ReadingEnvy thanks I'll have another look when i pop to the library later. 7y
saresmoore What a gorgeous description! Is this counting as a book about sports for you, Shawn? 7y
shawnmooney @saresmoore Isn't it just? Hey, I never thought about it (although I don't know how central surfing will be to this novel) – I will certainly consider it as a back up if I end up bailing on the one I have chosen for that sports category: 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @andrew61, I hold a massive Tim Winton grudge from high school (which my mum finds hilarious as she loved the book that I hated) but she goes on and on about Cloudstreet... 7y
andrew61 @thegirlwiththelibrarybag ive got hold of eyrie so we'll see. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @andrew61, according to my Mum, a fan, he fluctuates from brilliant to horrible book to book... can't remember if she like Eyrie or not...but if you hate it, try another! (Zero idea why I'm advocating for an author nothing would convince me to pick up 😂) (edited) 7y

Trav P.S. I loved the book up until a certain point, but was disappointed with the last few chapters. I'm curious to hear your thoughts once you're finished. 7y
shawnmooney @Trav So far I am completely and utterly a smitten kitten! ❤💜💖 7y
shawnmooney @Trav I finished it today and agree with you completely - the ending was a bit disappointing and that is the only reason it was a 4-star rather than a 5-star read. ❤❤ 7y

No-one does the sea like Tim Winton. He has a surfer's respect for the ocean and a poet's eye. I recommend all of his books, but Breath is distilled, lucid perfection.

shawnmooney @Trav recommended this author to me just the other day! Trav, do you specifically recommend this book as well? 8y
Marchpane Breath is a stunning book, great choice 8y
Heather_Reads This isn't my favourite Winton (always Cloudstreet for me), but I still really loved it. He writes so well about Australia in general I think. 8y
Abailliekaras Agreed @Heather_Reads I think Cloudstreet is the classic. @shawnmooney you could start with Cloudstreet and Dirt Music. Breath is a smaller diamond but high clarity. Nice to come to it after big, generous Cloudstreet. 8y
