#LetsTravelJuly Day 20: Captain Bluebear‘s journey has taken a great deal of #detour but this novel is one epic ride! Some may find Moers longwinded while others might find his imagination too absurd for words and abandon the reading of the novel altogether. But no book has ever made me laugh out loud in such abandon – tears streaming down my cheeks in utter hilarity. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-4IK

I was a big fan of this book! The land of Zamonia that author Walter Moers created is whimsical and quirky and the illustrations that accompany the story are fantastic. It‘s 703 pages but it flies by and ended up being a fairly quick read. If you want an adult fairytale, this book is for you. Highly recommend!

mellissimo I absolutly love all his books and illustrations. When reading his books I always can't wait to flip the page to see the next illustration. I'm actually kinda sad that I already read all of them and can't read them for the first time again ;) 12mo

Of course! When I come to think about it the best books I read had mostly over 400 pages 🤔😄

I officially give up! This has been sitting on my table since there was still snow on the ground and I have had no desire to pick it up. It reminded me if Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy- quirky and a little out there. But it became repetitive and predictable. I didn‘t finish it but it still should have ended 300 pages ago.

Bookishthoughts Oh no! That's to bad, I have been wanting to read this since I accidentally read the "series" out of order.? 1y

#QuotsyApril18 Day 23: Take a #Chance is all that Captain Bluebear is asking. If you haven‘t discovered Walter Moers yet, and you love fantasy and word play and strange art - then you will have to HAVE TO find him and read him. Translated from the German language, I pride myself in reading all of his translated works, thus far. I am a committed nerd that way. Get to know Zamonia, book nerds! It‘s an acquired taste, I admit, but well worth it.

This is our current family read aloud, a tale of Bluebear‘s lives #inthewild of Zamonia. I love the amazing vocabulary it exposes them to, and the kids loves the giggle-inducing silliness of it all. Great stuff in spite of its 700 pages, lol.

Seems you love Walter Moers – or you don‘t. I tried once or twice with his books but I could not relate to neither his characters nor the way he writes.

But as I saw @Sarah83 's post about the English edition I remembered that one of my friends offered me to lend me the audiobook. Which is what I‘d really look forward to because I think this might be a story suiting my ears better than my eyes.

Sarah83 You try the TV edition first, than the book is really amazing 😍 2y
Buechersuechtling You‘re not talking about „Die Sendung mit der Maus“ (The Show with the Mouse) pieces/stories, are you❓🤔 It‘s that kind of nonsense displayed there that made me initially dislike the author and that book. I never thought this is funny or witty humor. For me it‘s only stupid and dull. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 2y

Heideschrampf Great selection! 2y
Andrew65 Great list. Some interesting choices, I half expected Sherlock Holmes! Only read the Agatha Christie (many years ago). I loved the film made from Nick Hornsby' About a Boy, one of my favourite films. 2y

Sarah83 @Andrew65 I really thought about Sherlock, but I didn't want to annoy everybody with choosing Sherlock again. 😂😂😂 You have to read High fidelity. Really. It's really great. 2y
Andrew65 @Sarah83 I will do, I am also intrigued by the Captain Blue Bear book, I have never heard of it! 2y
Sarah83 @Andrew65 Walter Moers is a German writer, who invented a world like Terry Pratchett. Not that he is as good as Pratchett, but it's an uncommon world. The tagged book is about a blue bear, who maybe traveled around the world and visited other famous creatures within this world. I'll have a look, if I find a link. 2y

Time has come for me to give into the ereader! So, I ask you all, on a budget, which do you recommend?

Mindyrecycles Kindle Paperwhite all the way. 3y
Zelma Depends on whether you want to link it to Amazon (kindle) or Barnes and Noble (nook). I really prefer the ones with glow lighting rather than backlit screens, so it looks more like a page and not a tablet. So kindle paperwhite or nook glow, or one of the newer models like that. (edited) 3y
Crystalblu @Zelma I will probably use amazon the most, they basically own my soul by now, and I do want to read in the dark. Any feelings on the Fire? 3y
See All 12 Comments
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Another Kindle Paperwhite fan here. If your tablet needs are already being met then you don't need a Fire. E-ink feels so much more like a book than a tablet screen. 3y
Zelma I agree with @TobeyTheScavengerMonk on preferring a reader over tablet. But if you want a tablet (a device that will do more than just hold books), Fire is great. My mom loves hers. However, I find the light too harsh on my eyes for reading. Plus you can get a device with wifi and 3G or whatever so you don't necessarily need to hook up to a computer. I can purchase books with no problem on my nook but plug into a desktop to download library books. 3y
Crystalblu @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I will add, I have no tablet. Just a phone and a laptop, which I never use, so the idea of having something that can act as a tablet as well is somewhat intriguing as I use the web for cooking ideas quite a lot. I'm the kind off person who does not like single use items. 3y
myers85 Has to be Kindle Paperwhite. I also have a Fire but I never use it for reading, just browsing. The Paperwhite as others have said is just like a book and you can read in the dark without the light being harsh on your eyes. 3y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Okay, here is something to consider. As much as I like the Paperwhite, it doesn't do comics. If you've got no tablet and you want to read comics as well as books on an e-reader, you kind of have to go Fire. 3y
DGRachel I have a Kindle Touch, Paperwhite, and Fire. The touch is my favorite ereader, because there is no light so it's just like reading a "real" book, but you can't read in the dark without another light source. The Fire now has a blue light filter for night reading, which is AWESOME! I can read at night without sleep disturbances associated with computer/phone screens (I'm really sensitive). 3y
Betty Kindle Paperwhite 3y
ApoptyGina69 Since I have the iPhone 6plus, I just have the kindle app. I like it lots! Totally agree about multi-use tools. Just like in the kitchen. Good luck today with Foothills Celebration. Maybe the rain will keep the ppl calm. 🍷😍 3y
LauraBrook Kindle paperwhite. I've tried on my smartphone, with a Fire, and iPad, and the only one I like and return to is my paperwhite. Kobo's are also supposed to be v good but don't know firsthand. 3y

Eine meiner Lieblingsadaptionen zum Thema 'vermenschlichte Tiere und andere Wesen' 😶 Wir Deutschen kennen Walter Moers ja gut, kennt die Welt ihn auch?

One of my favourite #anthropomorphiccharacters. 😶 We Germans know Walter Moers pretty well, does the world know him as well?

rubyslippersreads I saw another book in the series at a bookstore and that got me interested in reading his books. 3y

Taayasbooks But don't listen to the audio book ;) Dirk Bach was great as a show host, but his voice as a narrator is a little ... annoying 3y
Sarah83 @Taayasbooks Audio book isn't my resort. I don't like, if one narrator speaks all people in one book. I fall asleep immediately. 😴😴 3y
RealBooks4ever I've been meaning to read this forever! 😻 3y
julesG @Taayasbooks I thought it was quite well done, the audiobook. I had hopes for a more grandfatherly voice but all in all I thought Dirk Bach had done a good job. Mind you, good, not perfect. ;) 3y
Taayasbooks @julesG I found it rather ...exhausting. Especially when his voice got shrill. I prefer audio books that are quiet and relaxing in the way they are narrated. 3y

I just finished the 700 page book "The 13.5 lives of captain bluebear" What a journey I had!!!! This is such an amazing book. And what a storyteller Walter Moers is! Such imagination! I so enjoyed this book and would have easily read another 700 pages to follow the stories of the blue bear! This is a quirky, wicked read. It will be hard to top this and 2017 only started ?

Heideschrampf I loved this one! For any German-speakers who've yet managed avoiding this treasure: I can only recommend the audiobook adaptation by the late comedy legend Dirk Bach bringing the whimsy and wisdom to live with so much care and fondness 3y

Deeply amusing, fantastically imaginative, seemingly superfluous, and yet lastingly impactful. A paradox and a tongue twister. A brainstormed creation on a grand scale. I even put it down, simply to let the experience last longer. When it was finally over, I gave a satisfied sigh and thanks for having found it. Highly recommended for a wild, fun ride. 6/5!! #wonderfulbook 😊😂❤⛵💙🐻

In the mood for some nonsensical wonderment? LOOK NO FURTHER. This book is like if Shel Silverstein and Ronald Dahl had a baby, and then they hired Douglas Adams to be its nanny. It's about 13 & 1/2 of Captain Bluebear's 27 lives, and the times he went up against hobgoblins, the spiderwitch, vampires, interdimensional royalty, trolls, and more. To sum up: This book is - say it with me now - BANANAPANTS. 🍌 👖 #Recommendsday
