Uglies | Scott Westerfeld
The first installment of Scott Westerfeld's New York Times bestselling seriesa global phenomenon that started the dystopian trend. The Uglies series has more than 3 million books in print, has been translated into twenty-seven languages, and spent more than fifty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Now all four books feature fresh new covers and will reach an even wider audience. Tallys adventures begin in Uglies, where she learns the truth about what life as a Pretty really means. She rebels against the surgery that will make her a Pretty, but ultimately succumbs. In Pretties, Tally has forgotten all about her Ugly life, and when shes reminded, she has a hard time listening. And what littles left of the old Tally is further compromised in Specials, because Tally has been transformed into a fierce fighting machine. But when shes offered a chance to forever improve civilization, will she be able to overcome her brainwashing? The answer is evident years later in Extras, after the Pretty regime has ended. Boundless human creativity, new technologies, and old dangers have been unleashed upon the world. But fame and popularity can be just as dangerous as extreme beauty.

In today‘s social media-driven society, I feel that this is a great story about the sensitive topic of what is considered “pretty”. It‘s light enough, as it is a YA read, and I could‘ve done without some of the teen romance, but overall it was adventurous and gets you thinking about possibilities of the future. I especially liked that the story tied in to our current world - it made it seem more personal. Would recommend for YA and sci-fi fans! 🎢

Started Uglies today, using a pretty Belgian bookmark from @Whimsical.Curiosity 🇧🇪

The concept of this one seems pretty relevant - definitely has a Black Mirror feel to it. Wonder if they‘ll ever adapt this to the screen? 🤨

Megabooks I don‘t know. I read it in 2012, so it‘s been out awhile. I loved Uglies and Pretties, while Specials and Extras were so-so. Maybe I shouldn‘t say that! 4mo
Clwojick That bookmark 😍 4mo
laur89 @Megabooks I feel like the film adaptation rarely does a book justice anyways. 🤷🏻‍♀️ might borrow the rest of the series - I‘ll see how I feel! @Clwojick I know right?! It‘s definitely the most precious/beautiful bookmark I own haha 4mo

There were a lot of things to like in this book - a lot certainly to think about in a society that tries to avoid conflict and war by making everyone look pretty and taking away individual differences based on looks. But the protagonist wasn‘t really likable and her decisions were made for the wrong reasons. Plus I can‘t help wonder who does the work in the new Pretty society. I gave it 4.0/5.0⭐️, but that may be generous. #2019

Cailey_Mac This was my first dystopian series when I was younger, and I loved it! It definitely is problematic, but it spoke to me so much since that was the era of seventeen magazine, and everyone looking so “perfect” 5mo
rretzler @Cailey_Mac I think it may have appealed to me more if I had been able to read it in my early teens, as I would have related more to the pretty vs ugly issues back then and the teen angst it may have caused. I did like it, but being far removed from those days, perhaps it‘s natural for me to think more about the practical aspects of the society. 😄 5mo

Honestly, in the beginning, it wasn‘t really catching my attention. I caught myself dozing off many times. It wasn‘t until part II and part III that things start getting interesting. And great ending left a great cliffhanger. Part II and III really made up for part I, can‘t wait to read #Pretties

Starting on Uglies by Scott Westerfeld today. I read it once when I was younger and enjoyed it but never finished the series. So they have been on my shelf forever it seems. One of my book groups is reading it this month so it seemed like a good time to get started again on it. Luckily the weather is nice outside! It's a great pick me up since I'm not feeling good today.

I‘m done! I‘m picking this because I actually really loved the world building. I loved how the characters would reflect back on history and know thats why they are where they are. My biggest complaint has to do with character development which was lacking.

5/5⭐ - full review on my blog.

A world where you are an ugly until your sixteenth birthday. And then, you undergo a surgery and you become pretty. And life is perfect. Except, maybe, it isn‘t.

Would you turn into a "pretty" and risk losing your personality?

Wonderful world building, and amazing plot. It makes you wonder what our society is like. I really enjoyed this one!

I‘m having a hard time putting my thoughts into words for this book. I really liked it, but it is hard not to compare it to other YA dystopian novels. The concept of dividing people by how they look is very interesting, as I think we already do this, just not so overtly. Taking something that is inherent to humans and elevating it was great. I will be reading the next book to see where the story goes from here.

I‘m trying to read more popular dystopian YA novels (my older niece‘s fave genre) over the summer. When I first heard the plot to this series, I immediately thought of one of my fave Twilight Zone episodes. While Westerfeld did an excellent job of creating a believable & interesting dystopian society, I couldn‘t fully sympathize with the emotional struggles of the protagonist. I think this might be a YA book that is better to read as a teen.

Chelsibno Or perhaps WITH a teen. Maybe if I had read it alongside my niece and discussed it with her, I might not have finished this book feeling so “meh” about it. 1y

I read this years and years ago.. maybe even before the series was finished. And I liked it, and I refer to it a lot.. But I didn't finish the series.
