Uglies | Scott Westerfeld
The first installment of Scott Westerfeld's New York Times bestselling seriesa global phenomenon that started the dystopian trend. The Uglies series has more than 3 million books in print, has been translated into twenty-seven languages, and spent more than fifty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Now all four books feature fresh new covers and will reach an even wider audience. Tallys adventures begin in Uglies, where she learns the truth about what life as a Pretty really means. She rebels against the surgery that will make her a Pretty, but ultimately succumbs. In Pretties, Tally has forgotten all about her Ugly life, and when shes reminded, she has a hard time listening. And what littles left of the old Tally is further compromised in Specials, because Tally has been transformed into a fierce fighting machine. But when shes offered a chance to forever improve civilization, will she be able to overcome her brainwashing? The answer is evident years later in Extras, after the Pretty regime has ended. Boundless human creativity, new technologies, and old dangers have been unleashed upon the world. But fame and popularity can be just as dangerous as extreme beauty.

Yknow when you get sucked into some internet black hole and you blink to see 20 more books in your tbr list? Yup, one of those. I was in a forum and a thread caught my eye: “similar series to Hunger Games”. I love HG. It‘s one of my comfort reads, spesh after I quit Harry Potter. This was suggested as a dystopian, future high-tech YA with many backers. Overall, it was decent…it felt more limited than HG, but I can see the similarities.

Good haul from the library shop for my classroom & some new items for the home library. Underrated place to get books: The Dollar Tree! (called that here in SoCal). Picked up quite a few decent YA for the classroom from there too

I‘m always up for a YA dystopian story. In this one, once you hit puberty you‘re considered an ugly. At 16, you get surgery to become pretty and live the best life. Which Tally plans on, until a friend chooses to run away and stay ugly. And Tally follows…I would like to read the next one, since I really enjoyed this, but I‘ve heard the sequels aren‘t good. Thoughts??

I really enjoyed the concept of this one. But the middle bit was so slow for like 200 pages. I am glad I stuck with it though, because it got really good at there end. Also, I just thought the names of the cities were really dumb. Where do the pretties live? New Pretty Town of course! And where do the uglies live? Uglyville! Still, I am looking forward to reading the next one. 4⭐️

It‘s the second trip to Powell‘s bookstore this week during a visit with family in Portland, Oregon. My niece loves dystopian fiction and I remember reading this series years ago. Bought her a combo copy with both Uglies and Pretties (books 1&2) together in one book. I hope she likes it.

0k, this was fun. This was recommended to me by one of my younger siblings, the first in a YA science-fiction dystopian type series and it actually helped get me out of my reading slump! Definitely written for a younger audience but still really entertaining, I‘m actually excited to continue with the others.

I have buddy readers and one of them is 16. This was her choice. It‘s not something I would choose on my own but the topic was interesting enough. The cliffhanger ending - yuck.

Let‘s just say I didn‘t care for it much and I‘m hoping the 16 year old does not choose to finish the series.

#woundrouswednesday @Eggs

I. I have not, it would be cool to read something by a Litsy member.
II. None so far
III. I used to want all the books I read made into movies, but I have been so disappointed with the movies made from books lately. The movies focus so much on the action/scenery than actual character development that everything else falls flat. Uglies would be the one book to movie I want.

I apologize in advance for the negativity 😢

I‘ve picked this book up at least once a year since I received it about six years ago and never made it past page fifty. I finally finished it and I still don‘t have anything good to say about it. All of the characters are annoying and self absorbed, the pacing is super weird, and the world-building isn‘t great. The only thing good about it is the concept which makes me sad.

I just really love me a YA dystopian. This is a quick-paced novel that has a lot happening. The premise is fantastic & perfect for current culture, particularly for the YA set. The writing style is just right to create a page-turner. It's simple to follow, but special in its word choice. The narration is interesting & entertaining, managing to keep things funny while still dealing with a fairly dangerous/serious topic. I found it quite a fun read.

Very fun nonstop Young Adult sci fi ride.

Imagine being sixteen and instantly receiving plastic surgery to ensure you are as pretty as possible... but the years before that you are literally referred to as an Ugly.

Tally is about to turn sixteen and cannot wait to finally be more than just “ugly.” However, her friend helps her discover there is a lot more going on under the surface that is... not very pretty.

Boooooks That sounds really interesting 🤔 4y

So the first chapter of this book almost lost me. After the first few paragraphs I really didn‘t think I‘d make it through this book much less the entire series. But here I am halfway into the second book singing it‘s praises! There‘s so many things in this book than makes me scared for our future generations. It poses the question of how far is too far when it comes to beauty. And is ignorance really bliss? #bookspin

425 pages

(The summary is in the comments)

h.aquino14 Brief summary: Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. In just a few weeks she'll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunning pretty. And as a pretty, she'll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun. But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world-- and it isn't very pretty. 4y

In today‘s social media-driven society, I feel that this is a great story about the sensitive topic of what is considered “pretty”. It‘s light enough, as it is a YA read, and I could‘ve done without some of the teen romance, but overall it was adventurous and gets you thinking about possibilities of the future. I especially liked that the story tied in to our current world - it made it seem more personal. Would recommend for YA and sci-fi fans! 🎢

Started Uglies today, using a pretty Belgian bookmark from @Whimsical.Curiosity 🇧🇪

The concept of this one seems pretty relevant - definitely has a Black Mirror feel to it. Wonder if they‘ll ever adapt this to the screen? 🤨

Megabooks I don‘t know. I read it in 2012, so it‘s been out awhile. I loved Uglies and Pretties, while Specials and Extras were so-so. Maybe I shouldn‘t say that! 5y

There were a lot of things to like in this book - a lot certainly to think about in a society that tries to avoid conflict and war by making everyone look pretty and taking away individual differences based on looks. But the protagonist wasn‘t really likable and her decisions were made for the wrong reasons. Plus I can‘t help wonder who does the work in the new Pretty society. I gave it 4.0/5.0⭐️, but that may be generous. #2019

Cailey_Mac This was my first dystopian series when I was younger, and I loved it! It definitely is problematic, but it spoke to me so much since that was the era of seventeen magazine, and everyone looking so “perfect” 5y
rretzler @Cailey_Mac I think it may have appealed to me more if I had been able to read it in my early teens, as I would have related more to the pretty vs ugly issues back then and the teen angst it may have caused. I did like it, but being far removed from those days, perhaps it‘s natural for me to think more about the practical aspects of the society. 😄 5y
