Calypso | David Sedaris
David Sedaris returns with his most deeply personal and darkly hilarious book. If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And life at the Sea Section, as he names the vacation home, is exactly as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny-it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's powers of observation have never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future. This is beach reading for people who detest beaches, required reading for those who loathe small talk and love a good tumor joke. Calypso is simultaneously Sedaris's darkest and warmest book yet-and it just might be his very best.

This is the first Sedaris book that I‘ve read & I liked it. He‘s got a great sense of humor that colors even the emotionally hard stories. My favorite essay was his Fitbit obsession because ‘It Me‘. If you like essays with humor, wit, & pathos this is a great collection to check out.

This is pretty typical Sedaris, but with a hint of melancholy. He writes a lot about his family and deals with care for his aging father, his sister‘s suicide, and his own experience of growing older. I always prefer the audiobooks for his work because he‘s great at reading them. Some of the recordings in the audiobook are live readings as well.

charl08 I really like the live recordings of his work - have been enjoying the BBC radio ones "Meet David Sedaris". Will have a look for this 4d

I haven't done a check-in recently on my yearly reading challenges, and I am quite satisfied with my progress! An audiobook and two graphic novels helped bump up my numbers in a month that was extremely busy!

I laughed so much in this humorous yet deeply personal collection of essays. The #audiobook was fantastic, I have already put a hold on another one of his audiobooks at the library. His obsession with wearing a Fitbit, which he brings up in two separate chapters, had me laughing as I listened while tracking my steps on two separate #audiowalks. 😆

Almost finished my puzzle while listening to the last few chapters! #audiopuzzle

I usually read an hour before bed but this book was so funny that I couldn‘t fall asleep afterward. I liked the story so much that before even finishing it, I ordered another book by Sedaris. Favorite quote: “These troubling, Jimmy Cricket-style trousers…that I bought…they have horizontal stripes and make my ass look like a half dozen coins collected in a sack made from an old prison uniform.” Will undoubtedly improve your mood!

Just got a ton of crazy looks when I laughed hysterically on my lakeside walk when I listened to the following:

“Increasingly at Southern airports, instead of a ‘good-bye‘ or ‘thank-you,‘ cashiers are apt to say, ‘Have a blessed day.‘ This can make you feel like you‘ve been sprayed against your will with God cologne."

That, and being called sweetie or hon are huge pet peeves of mine. ?? #audiowalk #LitsyWalkers

SaturnDoo 😞😞 Being a southerner I use terms of endearment and say have a blessed day as well as thank you and goodbye. Just our culture/nature.😊😊😊 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @SaturnDoo It rubs me the wrong way because it assumes that everyone is religious/Christian. And 90% of the time I hear it, it sounds really fake or is said in a passive-aggressive way (the PTA president that didn‘t want to hear a no from you, the politician that doesn‘t like your coffee chat questions). Not saying it is wrong, I just personally don‘t like it, and I grew up with a southern grandmother. 1mo
SaturnDoo @4thhouseontheleft I totally understand 😊.I work retail and we are forced to greet/close with EVERY customer. Unfortunately, after a while we do begin to sound robotic or like broken records.I try to personalize my salutations/closings and it's a challenge 😂 Good food for thought 😊 I will keep this in mind. 1mo
Amandajoy I have to call a lot of patients for my work. Getting a voicemail greeting that ends with “have a blessed day” makes me roll my eyes. It happens at least twice a day. It always feels disingenuous. 1mo
ravenlee I get this a lot here in NW Louisiana, and I hate it for the same reasons as @4thhouseontheleft . Sometimes I respond with “blessed be” just to see if they notice, but I mostly just try to ignore. I‘ve had too many people try to “save” me to engage at all. 1mo

So it turns out that a 16-mile run is just enough time to listen to this in its entirety. Another solid entry in the Sedaris canon, wryly narrated by the author. I‘ve decided he‘s a ‘sit-down‘ comic: able to make so much out of so little, astute observations and acerbic word play. AND — as bonus — my town name checked! The third book I‘ve read in the past few months to mention the 101st largest US city. Always fun! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As usual I come away from David‘s book with mixed feelings. Yes, he‘s funny, twisted, and sometimes disrespectful, and some of the stories I find disturbing. Mental illness is not always humorous and I worry about the sanity of his whole family. Events are exaggerated for a laugh, right? I hope someone steps in to make sure he never owns a live animal.

gradcat You know, I don‘t think I‘ve ever met anyone who doesn‘t like Sedaris...meanwhile, I do not like reading him, and I can‘t really say why. I just never could get into him. Thanks for letting me know that he‘s a bit of a mixed bag—I don‘t feel so guilty anymore for not liking his work. 👍 4mo
