This was my favourite read of 2019, if not all time!!
I absolutely loved the southern descriptions that Owens uses throughout the novel.
I found myself relating to Kya since I have an avid love for the outdoors and being out in nature.
It was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.
This coming of age story is perfect for anyone who has found themselves struggling to fit in,
Or for anyone who has a true love for nature.

cherinium This jumped to the top of my favorites list, too. Such vivid, beautiful writing. I love when the setting becomes a character. 💕 15h
Alora I did not want it to end! And that ending?! Oh my goodness! I did not see her being the poet. I cried lol 😭😭 8h
Scochrane26 That‘s a perfect bookmark because Delia Owens used to work as a wildlife specialist in Africa. I think she said she studied lions or tigers. And elephants. I went to a signing last February. 5h

Alora Yes she did! I didn‘t know she studied lions or tigers though! Neat!! Tigers are my favourite animal. She is a biologist and also wrote a few other books based on animal behaviour from when she was in Africa. I really want to read her other books. Hopefully she writes another novel in the future too! 😁 @Scochrane26 4h
Alora I am so jealous you went to a signing! Very cool! @Scochrane26 4h
Scochrane26 @alora I hadn‘t read the book yet & didn‘t know anything about her at that time. I just knew I should go while I had the chance. 4h
Alora That makes it even better once you start reading the book!! @Scochrane26 (edited) 4h

I'm not going to complete my goal of 25 states this year, but I've made a little progress and can check off Hawaii, Wyoming and North Carolina with these three reads 📚

yes, i am #bookstagram -ing this. It's amazing. My mom, @corizzo, gave me the recommendation to listen to the audio book on the drive up to huntsville to see my dad last week. I got through about 10 chapters and then decided I needed to read it on paper, and i've been hooked ever since. def recommendation to whoever needs a warm fall read! #bookstagrammer

My MIL loaned this to me and said I HAD to read it. Maybe I‘m just contrary, but when people tell me I have to do something, I don‘t want to do it. So this has been sitting around my house for months... Once I finally picked it up though, I flew through it. I‘m not completely sold on the ending, but I enjoyed the process to get there.

Tamra It was a so-so for me. I didn‘t really get hooked into the premise, but I love nature and it delivered on that theme. 1w
MarriedtoMrT I‘m totally the same when told to read something. It‘s why I can‘t do book clubs. Something that‘s supposed to be fun becomes required reading and I don‘t want to! 😂 1w

The writing is lyrical and flowing, kin to Pat Conroy's descriptions of similar Low Country flats and sea, and nearly as well-written. But whereas Conroy klunks the reader on the head with long passages of beauty, Owens flows into the reader slowly, like tides coming in and then receding. I think it's a triumph of a first novel, and I very much hope that she will publish again. Highly recommend.
