Typical memoir, but her stories were funny. I had the audiobook and listened and laughed in one sitting.
So grateful to Retta for helping me beautify & shade this ugly as sin & hot as balls area of my desert home.
So, I‘m trying to “read” three books at a time...one Audible, one print, and one Kindle. I‘m enjoying this listen (read by the author), and appreciate her no nonsense, no drama approach to life, and that she doesn‘t take herself too seriously. Enjoyable story time!
OH MY GOODNESS YESSSSS! This audio book read by Retta was absolutely amazing! If you've ever watched Parks and Recreation, she brings every bit of her personality to this book and it is hilarious. She is so down to earth and I definitely feel I'd be a complete fan girl if I ever saw her. The three week wait to listen to this was worth every second. #love #funny #audiobook #shesthebest #treatyoself #favorite #fivestars
Truly laugh-out-loud funny. Nothing can compare to the audio version! Borrowed the book just to look at the pictures included (worth it) but hearing her words in her voice with her infectious laughter is definitely the way to go. Love that it feels like you are just friends chatting. Includes a few, but not too many, behind-the-scenes Parks & Rec details.
*In Jon Hamm‘s voice* REEEEETTTAAAAA! I liked Retta from Parks and Rec, but knew her only as much as the show let out. This memoir felt so humble, intimate, and so down-to-earth that I feel like she‘s one of my good friends. I listened to the audiobook (recommended) which added another layer of closeness, like we were chatting on the phone.
I listened to the audio book but some of this was so good that I had to check out the ebook also just so that I could share it with you guys and my family.
Retta reminds me of a favorite aunt, the one that gives awesome boy advice, knows the best places to shop, and always has bail money.
This audio was funny, and charming. I loved Retta as Donna on Parks and Rec, but now I adore her as a person.
1. Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser took over my weekend but it was a huge success. We raised almost $1000 between sales and donations. #FightLikeAGirl
2. At work avoiding working.
3. Tagged. So funny.
4. The Dr Pepper you see sitting on my desk (at work 😉)
5. Errrr... food. Lol

Before this book, I knew nothing about Retta but heard about the audiobook on a podcast. Retta is fabulous! She is funny, down to earth, and relatable. I just finished and want to immediately go back to the beginning and listen again, which is something I do not do. She reads the audiobook herself and now I totally want to be friends with her.
Yes- If you enjoy Retta‘s work (most well known Parks and Rec) then you know she is fun and charismatic. She reads this work- not full of angst or “tell all my problems” but fun and a great audiobook read by Retta. She is obsessed with handbags, Hockey and Hamilton and her enthusiasm is infectious. Solid fun listen!
Thoughts on calling in sick tomorrow so I can stay home and listen to Retta read to me all day? You guys, THIS BOOK! Loved her in Parks and Rec, love her in Good Girls, and am confident she would have killed it in Dreamgirls. Retta is the real deal. Highly recommend the audio for the full hilarity of her storytelling. If I haven‘t sold you already, there‘s a whole bit about coffee and pooping. #nailedit Can we get a girl her sitcom now????
Funny, smart, honest, and I felt like I was listening to her tell stories rather than reading a book (which I guess if I listened to the audiobook, I would have). I love how she is 100% herself and stays true to that, regardless of how it makes her look. I want her as my new BFF stat. My favorite chapters were the ones on body confidence and her childhood and I want her to be on all the shows.
Loved it, love Retta. Pretty sure we would be BFFS...I should tweet her thanks for the laughs during this crappy, hot week.
Using it for my #booked2018 Diverse nonfiction
I‘m finally sitting down to breakfast (scrambled eggs and sliced avocado on toast) while I listen to Retta‘s audiobook. This book is so good!
I‘m about halfway through Campfire. I‘m enjoying it so far. Stuff is just starting to go down so I‘m expecting it to amp up in intensity soon. #24in48
This week has been blergh, but this book (along with whatever episodes I could sneak in of another Mike Schur-related thing, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) helped to make it less so. Retta is so smart and funny, and these essays were, too.
Disappointing. This is between a so-so and a pan for me. I didn‘t feel like she had much to say. Like. A podcast perhaps, but not a book. I skipped a few chapters because they were shallow, mean, and gossipy. The one that was my favorite was “Genuine Is Not My Cousin” where she spilled about being on Parks & Rec. The rest made her seem...kind of...mean?
I still have so much respect & love for Retta as an actress, but not this book. Not at all.
Okay if you don‘t know who Retta is than you have not watched one of my favorite shows of all time, “Parks and Recreation” where she killed it every episode as Donna. This memoir was all that I could have hoped for, it was incredibly hilarious and just honest. Definitely a great read!
I wanted to love this collection of essays by Retta. I've never watched Parks and Rec, but it doesn't matter. I like funny people. I love comedians.
Most of these essays were an absolute delight. Fresh. Insightful. Recommended.
I have issues with people who have a lot of money and like to talk about it. It's a me thing. It might not bother you. She deserves every penny, but I don't like hearing about it. $15,000 for a purse? You lost me.
TREAT YO S(H)ELF and read this book! I legit laughed out loud at her stories. I loved her on Parks & Rec, but it's her social media that makes me a big fan. She is hysterical AF & I knew her book had to be too! Get. The. Audio! If you follow her you know she's a Hamil-maniac. There's a whole chapter on her obsession that if she wasn't so awesome you would hate her just a little bit...but not really (only after you got done being jealous. 😆)
Y'all! This audiobook is making me laugh out loud!
