And Still I Rise: Black America Since MLK | Henry Louis Gates, Kevin M Burke
post image

#wdncw when we say that Mamdani‘s win last night was amazing to see. My 21 year old & I had talked about him a few months ago. Mamdani & candidates like him are the future. The younger generation like my son are excited about candidates like Mamdani. They want to see someone who addresses their concerns: affordability, supporting immigrant & LGBTQ+ communities, supporting women, taxing the rich, protecting the environment. They believe in social

ncsufoxes justice. The polls showed that young women & men voted primarily democratic last night. They know they don‘t want to live in the current system. My son is much more politically aware than I ever was at his age. I‘m here for shaking up the system. I‘m here for a more just society. I listened to Mamdani speak a few months ago & I was intrigued. His background in social justice & connection to MLK, Jr is inspiring for the next generation. 2d
dabbe @ncsufoxes Goosebumps reading this. I think it's safe to say that we can hand the reigns to your son and his generation and hope that they do a much better job than we did. 💙✊🏻💙 2d
Sparklemn I believe that Gen Z are going to change the world for the better. So amazing to see the engagement. (edited) 2d

ncsufoxes In case you haven‘t seen this speech, this was how I became aware of Mamdani. https://youtu.be/Y0b-YwxhOaQ He‘s speaking at a Baptist church about his dad‘s involvement in SNCC. (edited) 2d

"I don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow. But I am here, so I might as well fucking enjoy it, and help my community if I can"

Words to live by!! Miss Major passed away last month. She was an inspiration as she says many times here, not many Black Trans people get to live to be in their 80s, what an amazing life she has had. Not easy, but amazing. I like how she spoke of Trans rights reminding us to be good allies by not assuming ?

ChaoticMissAdventures What the community needs, or deciding as allies what we think they deserve (a sentiment shared by Chef Jose Andres') She talks about Stonewall, police violence, how the Gay community tries to erase the Trans community, she talks about Palestine and a host of other topics and her insights are invaluable. 4.5/5⭐ #nonfictionnovember 3d
Bookwomble I really loved getting Miss Major's perspectives through this book. Sorry to hear she's passed away. Rest in Power ✊🏾🏳️‍⚧️✊🏾 3d

"It's like being on a road, it doesn't matter if it's the yellow brick road, or pavement, or gravel. It's still a road and where it takes you is where you're going. And I think the journey is how you use that road- if you stay on it and the path that it's leading you down, or you venture off and do something else and create a path of your own."

#NonfictionNovember is here!
#WeeklyForecast

I am halfway into the tagged would like to finish tomorrow.
I am planning on reading one chapter from Far From The Tree a day, there are 12 chapters but I am looking realistically at a full 2 weeks I understand it is a dense one.

Supplementing with the brilliant Ta-Nehisi Coates and the inspiring Jacinda Ardern

ncsufoxes The Message was really good. I‘ve had Far From the Tree sitting on my shelf for years. I need to finally read it. I‘ve read lots of books about disability & mental health but this is one that I have not tackled yet. 5d
ChaoticMissAdventures @ncsufoxes it's a pretty intimidating chunckster. But I am 50 pages in and it is easily digestible. Many people here really love it. 5d

Happy #AllHallowsReadSwap day! Looking forward to these haunted house books. I love that the covers have similar color schemes. And that ghost‘s face was all of us dealing with 90° weather halfway through October. I‘m glad the freezer saved him (he was delicious)? ? Thank you @LeslieO happy #AHRS

I was not far into this story before deciding the title of book is such a tell. And then deciding no, it‘s a red herring. Then no, it's a tell. Then okay, just calm down and read to the end. … I also did a stereo listen with the audio since I love the voice Bahni Turpin brings to an author‘s characters.

Eggs Great photo tableau! I like Bahni too❣️ 2w
marleed @Eggs Thank you! Her narrations always add to the story ❤️ 2w

Before I Let Go | Kennedy Ryan

Our traumas, the things that injure us in this life, even over time, are not always behind us. Sometimes they linger in the smell of a newborn baby. They surprise us in the taste of a home-cooked meal. They wait in the room at the end of the hall. They are with us. They are present. And there are some days when memories feel more real than those who remain, than the joys of this world 💔

Reggie Omg I loved this book, and the Skyland series as a whole. She‘s sooo good. 1mo
BittersweetBooks it was really good, looking forward to the second book! Which book is your favorite from the series? @Reggie 1mo
Reggie It‘s this one, but only because before I read it, I had been to 6 funerals in one year and the last one had really hit me hard. And for 3 months I just felt like I could cry at any moment but when I read this I felt like I was going to grief counseling with the MCs. After reading it, I felt so much better. The next two are awesome but this one holds a place in my heart. 1mo
BittersweetBooks Oh wow, I‘m so sorry! That sounds like an incredibly tough time. I can understand why this one would be special to you. I really appreciated the way Kennedy depicted grief throughout this book. @Reggie (edited) 1mo

Unapologetic reminded me that Black queer women are the blueprint. I felt seen, held, and called to action. This book isn‘t just theory—it‘s a lived mandate for liberation, organizing, and reimagining our future. Tender, powerful, and necessary. I took my time with it, and it was worth every page.
