Just finished listening to the audiobook. This is between a pick and a so-so for me. Her story is incredible - I don‘t know how she lived through as many horrible things as she did. And her message to stand up and speak out - to take the steps to change Hollywood and the world was nice. There was something about the tone of the book that didn‘t always hit me the right way. It was an interesting listen but that opening song was crazy 😂

I really enjoyed this. There was a great line at the end that I should have written down but basically she said she might not always be right but at least she was honest (desperately hoping I got the gist of that) and I loved it. I don‘t necessarily agree with her 100% of the time but I believe her and I love her confidence and her unwillingness to be put down. I think she is an inspiration and we could all take a lesson from her openness.

Reagan @britt_brooke yes I totally got that vibe, like she feels she‘s just way more self actualized than the rest of humanity. I did still really like it though. Her life has been insane. 8mo

I am in no way going to diminish what is obviously a raw and personal tale, and it certainly packs the wallop that those words would bring. I just didn't know how to get to grips with that emotion as a book. Perhaps given the topic that's how it's supposed to be.

I have a lot to say about this book, and Hollywood, and media, and being a member of the audience. More then I could write here. So let me just say, this was a good book about a difficult topic, written by someone who is dismissed by our culture but who has valuable knowledge and experience.

This book has got a lot of swearing in it! not that I mind but I thought it was her story about surviving cancer but she calls it a break up with her hair.

I will give Rose McGowan that she is brave for telling her story of abuse, mistreatment and rape. I get her anger. I really don‘t want to talk this book down, but it did feel a bit too much at times, almost a bit arrogant. Like McGowan‘s way is the only way. But everyone deals with trauma in their own way, so I really don‘t feel justified in judging Rose on how she does it. I would just have liked more nuance.

#booksandvinyl it had to be the Julie ruin to pair with this. This is raw and you can feel the rage and urgency to get this out. After reading trainwreck this was the perfect example of someone taking back her narrative after people tried to portray her a certain way and she does that. Rose is someone who will probably make you uncomfortable but she says her intentions are pure. I believe her. Continued

Weaponxgirl Some of what she talks about is obviously her examining why she behaved in certain ways in the past and adding the narrative on top. This isn't a bad thing I think we all do that to our pasts and for the most part she's aware of it. At points she can come across as almost condescending but I don't feel that's her truly feeling that way. She's survived a lot and she therefore puts her points across quite forcefully and this may put some people off 2y
Weaponxgirl Honestly we don't get to see women's righteous rage that's raw like this very often. It can put you on the back foot as we are socialised to be more nurturing and she's not taking that role for anyone anymore. You can feel that she is caring but her defences are up with good reason to be. This ends as a call to arms and she doesn't pull any punches or soften any blows. She's kinda scary in a good way and I think this is a great book to mull over. 2y
Weaponxgirl I'm also not sure I've put my points across clearly and would love to know what others thought about this book? #readingwomenchallenge #readharder #readharder2018 (edited) 2y

mcipher This sounds like a really powerful but tough read! 2y
Chrissyreadit Would you recommend this book? I was drawn to the cover and am wondering about getting it for my 17yo niece- she just moved in with us after years of abuse from stepmonster- and shaved her head the week before she came. 3mo
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I would be wary of giving it to someone that young who had suffered abuse from parents as I think it could be triggering and whilst I admire rose in a lot of ways she is in this book still obviously working through a lot of rage and trauma from lots that‘s happened to her from many different quarters. That said it‘s been a long time since I‘ve read this one and I‘m just going from what I remember. Sorry going to have another comment 3mo
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I think rage can be great and reading about someone else can be healing so for some this might work but I would deffo want to get something to go alongside this sort of read as it‘s just incredibly raw and I‘d want to offer something that has stuff you could work through alongside. I dunno if I‘m making sense and I can‘t think of anything else to recommend right this second but will have a think. 3mo
Chrissyreadit @Weaponxgirl yes- perfect sense! That is exactly the feedback I was looking for. 3mo

Just finished this one in time to call it a “March Book”. Look, Ms. McGowan comes off a little unhinged in this book, and some facts, figures, and details seem to not add up or sound contradictory. However, the overall message of thinking for yourself and standing up for marginalized people—being brave—is an important one. Because of that and its high readability, it‘s a pick for me.

emilyhaldi McGowan really rubs me the wrong way but I love your reasoning for making this a “pick” 👍🏻👍🏻 2y

I read this in one sitting last night. On one hand, Rose has been through a lot of crap and I definitely feel for her. On the other hand, the whole book comes off as an angry rant with almost nothing positive at all about it. I commend her for speaking out against sexual abuse, and I'm all for women's equality, but it seems that if you don't do things exactly the way she likes, you're doing it wrong. This book made me sad. 2.5⭐️

I think Rose is an unreliable narrator- that is not to say she is a liar (not suggesting that at all!) But I do think she is now looking back over her life with the events that have happened in the last 6 months and therefore this has tainted the way she recalls things I.e the reasons behind why she wore the famous dress she wore at the VMA‘s. Also she is incredibly condescending to the reader. Interesting enough to finish. I tried to like this.

I didn‘t want to read Rose‘s book because of what the Monster did to her, but because I was interested in her life. There was so much I didn‘t know. Actually, I didn‘t know all of it. She really is punk. 🤘And I love it. She shares disturbing information and insight that will truly open your eyes to Hollywood more than ever.

ChrysFey Review continued: I didn‘t like some of her statements like this one: “Your entertainment comes at a cost to us performers. You should know this and acknowledge.” Here she was referring to having been fake married 3 times before her “real” marriage, and felt robbed of the experience. But performers choose their jobs, their roles (although there aren‘t many great roles for women, esp. WOC), and to continue acting knowing what acting involves. 2y

“I felt like I was in a fun house and all the mirrors were reflecting my horrors.”

McGowan has undoubtedly had a strange and difficult life. Some very valid points are made here, but they‘re often shrouded in grandiosity. I (mostly) appreciate her candor, but she certainly thinks she smarter than most people. That‘s annoying. She has somewhat altered my view on Hollywood, so I applaud her for standing her ground, but this book was just okay.

britt_brooke @Jess7 Which interview did you listen to? I want to look it up later. Thanks! 2y

britt_brooke @Jess7 Thank you! 💚 2y
Reviewsbylola I just saw your review on GR and it cemented the fact that I would hate this because I find McGowan irritating at best. The conceited aspect is something I don‘t tolerate well. And yes to what @emilyhaldi said about her bookstore meltdown. That‘s when I really started to think that her antics were a disservice to the victims she is supposedly trying to help. I think her actions are very self serving in reality. 2y
britt_brooke @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola I just watched the B&N meltdown. So, that person was out of line HOWEVER, McGowan‘s response was insane. Truly insane. She thinks she‘s so important. Then I watched the clip of her with Colbert. She acts like she‘s some kind of savior. Delusional. I‘m glad I got this from the library and didn‘t buy it. (edited) 2y
britt_brooke @Jess7 I just listened to it. She‘s so odd. The narcissism and delusions of grandeur are intense. It‘s like she exists on some other planet entirely. Glad I got this from the library instead of buying it. 2y
Jess7 Glad you listened to it! I like strong women with unapologetic confidence, but to me her attitude is something else entirely. I just couldn‘t take it. I also didn‘t think she sounded very smart. Who the hell buys “cheap” plane tickets to no where just so they can write. I don‘t buy it— she‘s arrogant, and extremely out of touch with reality.. Does this come through in her book or were those parts more finessed? 2y
britt_brooke @Jess7 The book is a little less erratic, but still over-the-top weird in parts. She likes to talk about how smart she is, and to me, that‘s so .... well, dumb. If you want people to believe you‘re intelligent, then present yourself in that manner. I felt like at times she came off as very juvenile. (edited) 2y

I‘m going into this with a open mind. I have very conflicted feelings. On the one hand I think she is incredibly Brave to speak out the way she has about her own experiences, I also think that she has promoted and relaunched her career off the back of it with a tv show, a book and an album- feels uncomfortable. But then others in the industry put a halt to her career for many years- so is she just making up for lost time? #conflicted #brave #rose

This is an important book to read. Rose deals honestly with her rape by one of Hollywood‘s most powerful men and the systemic way in which she was silenced in Hollywood. She compares it to her childhood, which was spent in a cult. Rose has had an undeniably hard life and it is difficult to watch her be dismissed as ‘crazy‘ by the media because she is on the bipolar spectrum (something she is honest about in the book). This book is powerful.

KendallMorganHall I‘d like to add that none of us can know how reliable a narrator Rose is. i certainly did not take everything said in this book as fact but I also didn‘t disbelieve her. The message is what I found powerful and that is that women need to stand up, fight, and be brave in face of a system that has so long been rigged against them. 2y

Can we discuss this book? I haven't read it but I've seen her on talk shows and listened to her on podcasts. I want to like her but I just can't. She doesn't respond well to criticism from trans activists and others and does not seem to grasp the range and nuances of feminist activism and isn't interested in learning. Thoughts?

Ekkross I am feeling the same way. I think we can‘t deny her important role in the movement, but her flaws are tough ones to look past 2y
WhatDeeReads That about sums her up. 2y
OrangeMooseReads I agree. I won‘t deny that she has played a major role in the current movements against sexual assault and rape. Her form of Feminism though is incredibly problematic and she seems to refuse to listen and learn from others. 2y

drokka There's an irony in her approach that is heavily criticised by POC and the LGBTQ+ communities, rightfully so. Her tunnel vision is alienating. 2y
Drnkpnkprincess I don‘t understand — obviously it‘s not a memoir, so it has to be fiction based (possibly nonfiction if she has a trans friend) so wouldn‘t her editors or anyone she let read it give her criticism and explain to her the difficulties with publishing and touring the book? Considering she‘s lived a weirder than average celeb lifestyle, wouldn‘t she be used to these types of conflicts, and shouldn‘t she be better prepared for criticism? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
