The Chrysalids
The Chrysalids | John Wyndham
The terrifying story of a world paralyzed by genetic mutation. In a community where deviations are rooted out as abominations, David's ability to communicate by "thought shapes" is a dangerous secret. When his ability is discovered, the results are horrific.

Set in a post-nuclear apocalypse North America struggling with the legacy of radiation. Deals with political questions still relevant to today.

I love this book but I‘ve always been a tad confused by the cover I have…maybe it‘s been too long since I‘ve read it but I don‘t remember any weird lobster insect dudes wearing fur collars

rwmg I don't remember them either, but the cover artist obviously knows his business. Who amongst us could resist a book featuring weird lobster insect dudes wearing fur collars? 2y

Chrysalids is set in post-apocalypse Labrador. The apocalypse is referred to by characters in Labrador as Tribulation & although it is never explicitly stated, the reader is able to infer that this was most likely brought about through nuclear war. The inhabitants of Labrador are told that this was brought on by God's displeasure with mankind & that they must return to their true image. Literally, as they continue to experience radiation related👇

vivastory defects, in both agriculture & in humans. The Christian fundamentalist society that has firmly taken hold in Labrador has zero tolerance for all perceived differences, & it is Wyndham's amorphousness in describing these differences that lends Chrysalids, amidst the standard post-apocalypse scenario, its gravitas & ongoing topical relevance. A blend of Tolastaya's The Slynx, Miller's Canticle for Leibowitz & Rushdie's Midnight's Children... 2y
vivastory yet, with Wyndham's signature style & an unsettling ending. I have now read 3 Wyndham books & this is my favorite. A true under the radar NYRB gem. 2y

I've read only 50 pages, but I really like this under the radar gem that is somewhat reminiscent of another NYRB: Tolstaya's The Slynx. Wish I could stay home and read it rather than going to work!

If you enjoy books about societies where people can't be different then “the chrysalids“ by John Wyndham is a book you'll like. It's a book where if you're born differently you get sent away to a place called “The Fringes“, and odd plants get burned and weird animals get killed. The book shows themes of ableism and racism toward those different, the author shows this through writing in a system where those different are sent away and sterilized.

If you like books about a post-apocalyptic society then you'll enjoy the chrysalids, it's a book set after a nuclear war where society has regressed back into believing that the earth is flat and that and sort of disability or “deformity“ is a sin against God (including birthmarks). There are 3 areas in the book where people live and mutate. The book is told through a first person perspective from the main character David, using “I“ “Me“ and “my“.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Jordan, however as this was not quite adequate for the post, I would like you to resubmit it. 1/6 2y

The second book I've read by John Wyndham and I'm impressed by it.

Originally published in 1955, it's way ahead of it's time.

There's themes of disability, bodily difference and theology.

The story in a takes place in a post apocalyptic world and reveals how we never learn even following such devastating circumstances.

Well worth reading even though quite disturbing.

I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

I really liked how this book handled a terrifying-for-me subject (nuclear war and the aftermath) with just the right pacing and tone to keep it from causing nightmares. Also I loved that the story was set in Labrador.

A group of telepathic children grow up in a post apocalyptic society where genetic purity and the eradication of mutants are primary values.

Well paced picture of David becoming more aware of the nature of his society and the danger he is in as he grows up.

This book as eh. I ha e read so many sci-fi stories like this that I stopped caring halfway through. There is a kid who has powers that make him different. He finds a group of kids and as they grow up they face hardships. They get found out and have to run. I won‘t ruin the ending. I realize this was written in 1955 so it was new and interesting then, but now it is one of millions. It‘s a quick read so if you want to try it‘s not a slog.

First published in 1955, this #postapocalyptic novel about conforming to the societal standards of religious fundamentalists in a post-nuclear holocaust world is well written & a quick read. David & his friends look non-deviant but share a dangerous secret: they can communicate mind-to-mind. Published today, this books would likely now be classified as #YA due to the ages of the protagonists. I recommend for fans of #dystopian lit.

#kitap #book

A chilling post-apocalyptic tale anticipating the devastations that could be wrought by a nuclear catastrophe set amidst a backdrop of religious intolerance and strict dogmatism that is unwilling or unable to tolerate anything out of the ordinary. The story may sometimes be bogged down by grandstanding speeches from either side, but if you could overlook it, this makes for a compelling read.
