Phantoms | Dean Koontz
CLOSER They found the town silent, apparently abandoned. Then they found the first body strangely swollen and still warm. One hundred fifty were dead, 350 missing. But the terror had only begun in the tiny mountain town of Snowfield, California. AND CLOSER At first they thought it was the work of a maniac. Or terrorists. Or toxic contamination. Or a bizarre new disease. AND CLOSER But then they found the truth. And they saw it in the flesh. And it was worse than anything any of them had ever imagined

‘They found the town silent, apparently abandoned.
But the terror had only begun in the tiny mountain town of Snowfield, California.‘

I bought this years ago and just finally got around to reading it. One of the best books I‘ve read by Dean Koontz.

⭐⭐
Book 7 of 2022
My 29th Dean Koontz novel

So. Weird. ...It starts off really great, super creepy. Then about 2/3 in, I didn't really like the direction it was taking. Then it didn't take that direction at all and somehow that was even weirder. 🤷

Pardon me while I try to wash my brain out. ACOTAR book 5 (the 37% of it that I made it through anyway) did a number on me. 😂😂🤷

julesG Very smutty (is that a word?) for a YA series. Or did it cross into NA? 2y
kplovesbooks @julesG It is the only word that fits! Haha. And I don't get how it's YA at all. 🤷 2y

Ohhh boy, this book! I've to say this book knocked me know. I don't remember to be so scared reading something like I was reading this one. Dean Koontz tell us a sinister tale of mass disappearance (tbh this is a subject quite intriguing for me and real cases of it are mentioned in the book!) of a small town. Atmosfere is build upon noises disturbing silence and unexpected events. Get ready for a hell of a ride!

I really liked this one. A bit creepy to be reading by myself after dark, but isn‘t that what horror is for!? The author has a note at the end about the writing of the book, which was also interesting

Chose this for my “book to screen” prompt in The PlayBookers. Really enjoyed this audiobook. I plan to watch the movie soon. The book follows the happenings when the residents of a whole town seem to vanish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Currently reading Phantoms! This is my first time reading a book by Dean Koontz. I‘m so excited...and scared lol

LiterarySloth Phantoms is a good one. My all time favorite Koontz is Watchers. That was my first Koontz novel given to me by my dad. 5y
JadeBethJ Thank you! And Watchers is actually next on my list. So many people have recommended it! 5y

Getting to know Koontz and his writing style was a wonderful journey. He's easy to read and incorporates truth into his books. The story of Phantoms is a captivating one with lovable characters, understandable descriptions and page turning intrigue. In the afterword he goes into more detail about how the book came to life and his label as a horror writer which I really enjoyed. And it turns out there is a movie! #booktomovie

Guildedearlobe Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms (obligatory Jay and Silent Bob reference) Have you read Watchers yet. My favorite Koontz but do not watch the movie, it‘s horrible. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Guildedearlobe haha I just watched that clip! Solid Jay/Been high five there. I haven't read Watchers but I'll add it to the list. I love a good book to movie. Even a bad movie. 6y

inthegreensandblues Koontz was my first favorite adult author! I was really into horror as a kid and discovered his books on my dad's shelves. 😄 Agree that Watchers is really great too. I've been thinking about revisiting the Odd Thomas series lately, I think I missed the last one. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @inthegreensandblues My husband adored the Odd Thomas series. I loved the movie but that ruins me from reading them. I sobbed at the end. I've heard wonderful things about the Jane Hawke series and might check that one out. 6y

🦖🦖 Mainly because it's taken up the whole month to finish. I had to read other books in between to take a break. It's good! But it's not my typical genre. And my first Koontz.

Skygoddess1 I love Phantoms, it‘s probably my favorite book by Dean Koontz, try to reread every couple of years. Whatever you do, don‘t watch the movie, so does not live up to the book. Wish Nickelodeon or a streaming network would reboot Are You Afraid of the Dark 6y

AsYouWish Loved the show, and I think I have one of the Are You Afraid of the Dark books somewhere. I think every once in a while Nickelodeon plays an episode, and I get very excited!!! 6y
shellleigh33 I loved this show when I was younger. I rewatched it a couple years back with my kids. 6y
QueenOfWands My favorite show as a kid! 6y
KrystleTheBookSlayer Holy nostalgia! This used to be my favorite show...sometimes I still watch episodes on YouTube! 6y
Billypar Haven't read the Koontz, but I also loved the show as a kid. Combine that with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and John Bellairs novels, and that's a great map of my favorite scares growing up 😨😁 6y
Miss_Shush Loved this show!!! 6y
Chocamanda For a while they had some of the early seasons of Are You Afraid of the Dark on Amazon Prime. I don‘t know if they still do. I still quote this show. “That‘s Dr. Vink, with a veh veh veh veh” 😂 6y

SassyPants617 @marywag08 omg. That‘s the only one I remember. Lmao. I watched it a lot, but one night i was babysitting with my cousin, and that episode scared the crap out of me. 😂 For the longest time I thought i was the one who remembered. 6y
KathyWheeler @Skygoddess1 you‘re right about the movie — I was very disappointed by it. My favorite Koontz books are From the Corner of His Eye and Twilight Eyes. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Craftylikefox I'll have to check prime to see if it ever comes back! 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @KathyWheeler I hope it's my first one I like too 😁 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Skygoddess1 I had no idea there even was a movie! Netflix could make a killing. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Chocamanda 🤣🤣🤣🤣 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @KathyWheeler why would you say those are your fave? I'll need some more Koontz if this one turns out well. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @SassyPants617 @marywag08 I loved that one! ❤️Pinball 6y
theokiereader @Whimsical.Curiosity @SassyPants617 Yes! That episode scared the crap out of me, too! 6y
Shvonne I loved that show. It was so creepy 6y
KathyWheeler @Whimsical.Curiosity Twilight Eyes was set in a circus and was well told. From the Corner of His Eye has a hero who had the same eye cancer my daughter had as a baby and it has the best Koontz villain. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I remember that show! 6y
kezzlou85 I loved this show so much 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @KathyWheeler I will add them both to my list, they sound intriguing! And how crazy to be able to related to something so rare! I hope your daughter is all well and better! 6y
KathyWheeler @Whimsical.Curiosity My daughter is great now. She lost vision in her left eye, all but her peripheral vision, but she‘s good otherwise. I still feel that my friends who read the book before I did should have told me about that character‘s cancer though, instead of letting me encounter it with no preparation. It was still relatively new for me and my daughter back when the book came out. 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity @KathyWheeler so glad shes good! Some people just don't connect dots maybe. 6y
KathyWheeler @Whimsical.Curiosity I know — I tease them about it now.😊 6y

My very first adult horror book. I begged my mom to let me read it when I was like 15. I really regretted that lol. It terrified me but I literally couldn‘t stop reading it. I had nightmares for two weeks after I finished it. It was the most horrifyingly awesome book I‘ve ever read. A couple of years later I tried watching the movie....it was so lame compared to Koontz writing I shut it off after laughing at it. Koontz still terrifies me.

Jennifer Paige and her younger sister, Lisa, return to town to find it empty of all people and animals. The next several days they find themselves and the emergency personnel they were able to contact fighting an evil without a name. It was okay. Interesting evil, but none of the characters were stand out.

MidnightBookGirl I loved this book as a teen, but now I wonder how it would stand up. Koontz can be very hit or miss with me, although Odd Thomas is one of my all time favorite literary characters. 6y
Melkyl @MidnightBookGirl Same here. I loved this book when I read it as a teenager. I‘m not sure I would have the same reaction now. I don‘t always care for Koontz books anymore. 6y
youngreadrshelf @Melwilk @MidnightBookGirl I agree about Koontz being hit or miss. My favorite of his are the Moonlight Bay books. I am still awaiting the 3rd book in that trilogy.😔 6y
