Behold the Dreamers (Oprah's Book Club)
Behold the Dreamers (Oprah's Book Club): A Novel | Imbolo Mbue
A compulsively readable debut novel about marriage, immigration, class, race, and the trapdoors in the American Dream—the unforgettable story of a young Cameroonian couple making a new life in New York just as the Great Recession upends the economy Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award • A New York Times Notable Book • Longlisted for the PEN/Open Book Award • An ALA Notable Book NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • The New York Times Book Review • San Francisco Chronicle • The Guardian • St. Louis Post-Dispatch • Chicago Public Library • BookPage • Refinery29 • Kirkus Reviews Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem, has come to the United States to provide a better life for himself, his wife, Neni, and their six-year-old son. In the fall of 2007, Jende can hardly believe his luck when he lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. Clark demands punctuality, discretion, and loyalty—and Jende is eager to please. Clark’s wife, Cindy, even offers Neni temporary work at the Edwardses’ summer home in the Hamptons. With these opportunities, Jende and Neni can at last gain a foothold in America and imagine a brighter future. However, the world of great power and privilege conceals troubling secrets, and soon Jende and Neni notice cracks in their employers’ façades. When the financial world is rocked by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the Jongas are desperate to keep Jende’s job—even as their marriage threatens to fall apart. As all four lives are dramatically upended, Jende and Neni are forced to make an impossible choice. Praise for Behold the Dreamers “A debut novel by a young woman from Cameroon that illuminates the immigrant experience in America with the tenderhearted wisdom so lacking in our political discourse . . . Mbue is a bright and captivating storyteller.”—The Washington Post “A capacious, big-hearted novel.”—The New York Times Book Review “Behold the Dreamers’ heart . . . belongs to the struggles and small triumphs of the Jongas, which Mbue traces in clean, quick-moving paragraphs.”—Entertainment Weekly “Mbue’s writing is warm and captivating.”—People (book of the week) “[Mbue’s] book isn’t the first work of fiction to grapple with the global financial crisis of 2007–2008, but it’s surely one of the best. . . . It’s a novel that depicts a country both blessed and doomed, on top of the world, but always at risk of losing its balance. It is, in other words, quintessentially American.”—NPR “This story is one that needs to be told.”—Bust “Behold the Dreamers challenges us all to consider what it takes to make us genuinely content, and how long is too long to live with our dreams deferred.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “[A] beautiful, empathetic novel.”—The Boston Globe “A witty, compassionate, swiftly paced novel that takes on race, immigration, family and the dangers of capitalist excess.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Mbue [is] a deft, often lyrical observer. . . . [Her] meticulous storytelling announces a writer in command of her gifts.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

This follows the lives of the Jongas, immigrants from Cameroon, trying to live out the promise of the American Dream. A secondary story of the Edwardses, the family of a Wall Street exec, highlights the pitfalls of striving. The Jonga husband/wife disagree about America vs Cameroon, staying vs going, & the best future for their children. It explores what it means to be happy, what it takes to be home, & what it is to dream of better.

mc916 I returned this before finishing it because I couldn‘t get into it. I might have to pick it up again. It was a book club read, not my first choice, but everyone (or most) seemed to really like it. 3d

"Behold the Dreamers" is an incredible read. Imbolo Mbue does a brilliant job telling this story of immigrants and their struggles with the justice system in America, yet remain how grateful they remain for their opportunities.

Behold the Dreamers shares an interesting take on the immigrant experience. I envision that most immigrant stories begin similar to this. It was truly fascinating to see the Jongas story unfold from which Jende was desperate to stay and do everything to stay in America before leaving defeatedly back to his home of Limbe, Cameroon. Sometimes home is better and you need frustrating situations to prove it you.

Halfway through on this timely reminder of what immigrants face (and of the ridiculousness of our financial “system”)...I‘m stressed about driving on an expired vehicle registration through a combo of personal fault and DMV bureaucratic ineptitude. But I‘ll just get a fixit ticket, not deported to Limbe! Can‘t imagine the fead and stress.

#MayMovieMagic I have been finding it hard to settle in a book, BUT maybe this will be the one - It‘s NY 2007 and Jende ( whose wife & son are now with him from Cameroon) , Jende has now landed a good job #Behindthewheel as a chauffeur for a Lehman Brothers executive.. things are looking up .. Jende and Neni Jonga moved to the US to provide a better life for their two children than they had back home in Cameroon. I was knocked over by how much harder they had to work and live as immigrants for every single thing they earned than I likely ever will—still they felt extreme gratitude. The contrast between the Jonga family and their American employers is striking. We have so much here in America; the end was intensely emotional for me.

I read this book between Feb 16 & 23 and gave it 2 ⭐️. I really didn‘t like this book and felt it was such a let down. If anything the idea that the American Dream can corrupt is something that could have been done better but it‘s not. The writing is good but the characters become unlikeable and not much happens.

This was an incredible book. I loved the characters, the writing flowed beautifully, and the story kept me enthralled from beginning to end. It was at times heartbreaking, especially in light of what is going on in the world today (and the time period the story is set in), but it was also joyful and uplifting. It is a story of humanity, and it reminds us that we all struggle and we all want the best from life. Highly recommended!

I don't know how anyone can read this story and not have compassion for immigrants. The anxiety hanging over this family is palpable; as is the hope, love, and drive that motivates them. This book really illustrates the uneven power dynamic between immigrants and their employers while also showing the humanity inherent in everyone. It made me cry a few times.

Four ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reads! I am one lucky girl. August was a great month! 📚
I‘m excited to see what the rest of the year will bring since I won‘t be working full-time anymore. I‘ll be in school, so I‘m hoping to get lots more reading done! Can I get to 24 books for 2018? I sure will try 🤞🏽
.
