I downloaded this book in case I get a chance to read it as well. I‘ve already covered all these countries for #readingafrica2022 except #Senegal, but I think this will give me a better idea of some of them than what I read, especially #GuineaBissau. In case anyone is needing these hard-to-find countries in books for the challenge, this ebook is free with Kindle Unlimited. #Mauritania #Gambia #Guinea

BarbaraBB Thanks, I‘m sure I can use it! 2y

Hamed studied law in #Mauritania but when he spoke out against the government, he lost his law license. So he became a journalist but was soon blacklisted for his anti-government stance. So to avoid jail, he used his life savings to fly to NYC and became a refugee amongst the African diaspora in America. Told in present tense, third person it was an awkward read and felt almost too personal. But I learned an enormous amount about Mauritania and ⬇️

Texreader about the Mauritanian refugee life in America (it‘s very difficult). He also speaks to the migrant experience generally and makes excellent arguments why seeking refuge is a very last option for people, because it is not an experience for the weak or light-hearted. Anyone interested in the life of a refugee in the USA or about corruption in west Africa, I recommend it despite its awkward narrative. #readingafrica2022 2y
Cinfhen The content does sound very interesting- and of course it‘s a hard country to find book on 😊 2y

This really sounds like quite an awful place to live. An uneducated populace will not know enough to try to lobby for a democracy or to clean up corruption so the leaders do everything they can to keep people illiterate. The literate, if they won‘t be beholden to the corrupt leadership, they are jailed or barred from working. #Mauritania #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB
