Let the Right One In
Let the Right One In | John Ajvide Lindqvist
Oskar lives with his mum in a high rise building in the western suburbs of Stockholm. It's the early eighties and he likes listening to Kiss on his Walkman, solving puzzles - including the Rubik's cube - and pasting grisly murder stories from the newspaper into his scrapbook. A victim of bullying, Oskar doesn't have many school friends, but is interested in the strange new neighbour next door. Eli introduces herself but she's a little strange - she smells bad, doesn't feel the cold at all, even in November, and from time to time her hair has a lot of grey. Soon after Eli's move to Blackeberg a child's body is found hanging from a tree. The media think a serial killer is wreaking havoc in the town and affecting everyone's lives, but they're wrong - it's a vampire. This extraordinary and powerful novel is part horror, part comedy and mostly love story. A moving, affectionate and, at times, grisly portrait of the agony of growing up and finding love, Let the Right One In may be the most satisfying novel of the year.

I have no idea or excuse as to why it took me so long to read this book as I have seen the movie a dozen times. The depth of emotion and human connection (even when the humans aren‘t quite human anymore) created by the author as well as the atmosphere itself did something to the vampire genre that has never been replicated. Basically I‘m saying the book is dope and you need to read it.

I really enjoyed this book. Especially the descriptions of what it was like to live in Sweden in the 1980‘s. The author cleverly withholds details about Eli which ensures that you have good feelings regarding Eli and Oskar‘s relationship. Wanting them to stay friends and help each other out.

Palimpsest I haven‘t read the book, but I‘ve seen both movies. I like the Swedish one better. So good! I really should read this, but I have so many books on my to read list and I often struggle with reading a book I‘ve seen the movie version of, even if it has other inclusions. That‘s why I prefer reading the book first. Oh well. 9mo
ShyBookOwl @Palimpsest I'm the same. Once I see the movie I don't usually go back. In this case, I saw Let Me In and then read the book. The book is WAY darker. Then I saw the Swedish movie. It's closer to the book but still significantly tamed down. I think both movies brought different parts of the book to the forefront and I really appreciate that. 9mo

#NewYearWhoDis

This was interesting take on the vampire genre and at its heart it is about friendship. It was atmospheric, dark, full of unlikeable characters, and has a perfect gloomy and wintery setting. It‘s not particularly fast paced but it‘s quite gruesome, so be ready for that if you pick this one up!

I love Stephen King but I am always looking to expand my horizons in the horror genre. This was a perfect recommendation for me!

Mandigolightly I‘m sooooo glad you liked it! 13mo

I didn‘t like this book as much as I thought I would. The plot involves a 12 year old boy who is bullied at school and how he meets and becomes friends with a young girl. It takes place in Sweden so the language doesn‘t flow as it might have if it was a translation. Toward the end, I was kind of slogging and losing interest. A movie was made, based on this book. Someday I might watch it.

I saw this movie on TV but I‘ve got to tell you the old saying “the the book is so much better than the movie” Is really true here. Great twist about 2/3 through that is awesome.

I‘m thinking of using this for the #friendship prompt for #Booked2018 as well. Eli & Oskar have an unusual friendship, but isn‘t friendship protecting those who you love? 🖤

Leniverse It's a problematic friendship, as there's the question of "is Eli grooming Oscar?" But they are both lonely and protecting each other, getting comfort and companionship. 2y
RaimeyGallant Love the effect on your pic. 2y
JPeterson @Leniverse Agreed. If that is the case, it shows how friendship can be one-sided, as sad as that may be (or at least, how an individual views their relations with others). (edited) 2y

There were things I enjoyed so so much about this book and bits I really didn‘t like. The relationship between the two main characters was fascinating and beautiful, the writing was good. But I just don‘t like books that I feel like are trying SO HARD to gross me out, I‘m all for scary but I find really ~icky~ stuff quite offputting. What happened to Håkan (and who he was overall) was just not something I wanted to read about #vampires #horror

This is the first novel that I‘ve read from the author dubbed “Sweden‘s Stephen King”. It‘s an interesting take on the vampire genre rolled, somewhat, into a coming of age story. The translation by Ebba Segerberg (who doesn‘t even get listed on the cover) is superb without a badly translated sentence. While I don‘t normally read vampire stories as I don‘t find them all that terrifying, the vampires in this story are perfectly unnerving.

BookBoggart His version of vampire zombies doesn't get acknowledged enough! Lol. I'm obsessed with his concept and always tell people. Yet they never read it. 😥 2y
Pruzy @BookBoggart I didn‘t even think of describing the “heart brain” effect as a vampire zombie, but it makes perfect sense! 2y
BookBoggart Right!? 😀 always made me oddly happy. Lol 2y
See All 17 Comments
Pruzy @BookBoggart What‘s crazy too is that even after Häkan was “zombified” he was still driven by his disturbing and evil base instincts that motivated him when he was alive. 2y
BookBoggart Right!? Makes you think if something like that really is just our basic nature and not just the choice of the soul. If that makes sense...This makes me wanna re-read it so bad now! It's been 9 years or something since i read this! 2y
Pruzy @BookBoggart Nice! Any other Lindqvist books you recommend? 2y
Pruzy @BookBoggart Oh and on that same point, it totally makes me wonder what Virginia would have been like if she became a zombified vampire...would she have endlessly pursued Lacke? And considering Eli killed Lacke...what would Virginia have done then? 2y
BookBoggart I haven't read any of his other ones. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews and i have so much on my tbr. I can recommend Crow Girl though! Swedish style, dark, noir type. Though subject matter but very good. Written by 2 guys actually. I think it'shella unstated 2y
BookBoggart *hella underrated my phone decided to post it early annnd I don't feel like retyping it all. Lol 2y
BookBoggart I feel like she would be rather lost and lonely. Maybe persuing those who reminded her of him. Ultimately though she was better off. Even tho your mind is no longer there it would be a rough existence. Especially when the heart is guiding you. That seems a while new kinda hell. 2y
BookBoggart #deep. If you get that reference that's awesome! Lol 2y
Pruzy @BookBoggart Unfortunately I don‘t...what‘s it from? 2y
BookBoggart Haha it's from Bo Burnham's stand up caked "what." 2y

Thank you @Tiffy_Reads for my fun and festive gifts!!! 🎅🏼🎅🏼🎅🏼 I soak in Epsom salts all the time! Many items will be tried out today, coffee, travel mug, and socks for sure! But those books! I‘m not familiar with either but they will both fit with my challenge prompts! Woohoo! 🎉 ps - tell your daughter the candle is perfect!

Mdargusch Thank you so much for organizing the #whodunitbymail and the #whodunitdoeschristmas! I have met so many great people and read books I would‘ve never read because of it! @Tiffy_Reads (edited) 2y

Confession...I have not read this book, but it is definitely in my #tbr pile. I chose it as my #monstermadness2017 #day9 entry for today...#casper. A girl moves in next door who is misunderstood, she befriends a little boy...sounds like Casper to me 😬. I know I broke the rules a bit by including a monster, but at least it's not a ghost monster 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Bailedbailed

I think I'm going to have to bail on this one. 😫 😔 I'm just not getting that feeling of wanting to get back to reading it after doing something else. I know some of you guys really liked this book, but I suppose this wasn't for me.

SilversReviews Good you checked out. I used to read EVERY book whether I liked it or not. Not any more. Too many good books out there. :) 2y
