Wicked Bugs
Wicked Bugs: The Louse That Conquered Napoleon's Army & Other Diabolical Insects | Amy Stewart
28 posts | 20 read | 52 to read
In this darkly comical look at the sinister side of our relationship with the natural world, Stewart has tracked down over one hundred of our worst entomological foescreatures that infest, infect, and generally wreak havoc on human affairs. From the worlds most painful hornet, to the flies that transmit deadly diseases, to millipedes that stop traffic, to the bookworms that devour libraries, to the Japanese beetles munching on your roses, Wicked Bugs delves into the extraordinary powers of six- and eight-legged creatures. With wit, style, and exacting research, Stewart has uncovered the most terrifying and titillating stories of bugs gone wild. Its an A to Z of insect enemies, interspersed with sections that explore bugs with kinky sex lives (Shes Just Not That Into You), creatures lurking in the cupboard (Fear No Weevil), insects eating your tomatoes (Gardeners Dirty Dozen), and phobias that feed our (sometimes) irrational responses to bugs (Have No Fear). Intricate and strangely beautiful etchings and drawings by Briony Morrow-Cribbs capture diabolical bugs of all shapes and sizes in this mixture of history, science, murder, and intrigue that beginsbut doesnt endin your own backyard

I didn‘t post anything with this one because honestly, this book made me paranoid about all insects. Still recommend it for similar reasons why I recommended Wicked Plants. She gives all the information to give you an idea of the bug and how it‘s dangerous, without making it boring. If you‘re like me, prepare to be itchy throughout your read! #wickedbugs #wickedplantsseries #bugs #insects

I HATE bugs (ESPECIALLY BUTTERFLIES) but I love learning about them, so this book was right up my alley. I now know more about mating habits of disgusting creepy crawlies than I ever needed to, & I'm here for it. Just in case you need something to keep you up at night, here's a fun fact. "It is estimated that there are ten quintillion insects alive on the planet right now, which means that for each one of us there are two hundred million of them."

DaveGreen7777 Only ten quintillion?! That‘s not so bad! 😳 4y
xxjenadanxx @DaveGreen7777 Right? Totally manageable. Also some bugs can live up to 25 YEARS. wtheck. 4y
zezeki I'm not a fan of bugs either, (though I'm okay with butterflies and ladybugs) and I've noticed some species getting bigger and bigger every year. My biggest problem are those bugs that jump, because you never know which way they'll go. 🙈 4y
xxjenadanxx @zezeki I also hate jumping bugs. It's inevitable they're gonna jump on me. Especially spiders. Yuck. 4y

#Setoutdoors: Wicked Bugs
#Steampunk: Castle in the Stars
#Friendship: You're Welcome, Universe
#Floweroncover: The Belles

I live in a country where the only "dangerous" creature is the European Adder, which, honestly, is quite the opposite of dangerous. It's rarely lethal. A bite is painful, but that's mostly it. Given that, I had heard of maybe three of the creatures mentioned in this, yet it was /riveting/. Had a lot of "oh god everything is itchy get the creepy-crawly off me"-moments, but really, this was ridiculously interesting. My outdoors-read for #Booked2018

What a delightfully icky book . I knew I would LOVE it when I got to page 2 and read about the procreation habits of the African Bat Bug - and came across ( see what I did there ? 😆) the term “traumatic insemination” . ( which , by the way, would be a FANTASTIC name for a black metal band !! ) .

Spring has sprung and I'm sitting under the big tree that usually dumps big freaking bugs on me like it's its job, reading about bugs. I just flicked a tiny something off my arm. This is gonna suck. 🐛 😂

TommieMarie74 This books is more terrifying to me than any horror novel out there. 😰😬 6y
okthislooksbad @TommieMarie74 I thought I'd have to put it down immediately and probably burn it, too, but it's not bothering me /too/ much. Yet. 😦😂 6y

My wife was on a business trip, so I had to wait until tonight to give her these. We don't really do Valentine's Day, but I can't resist getting her a little gift each year. We ate some Korean BBQ and learned about evil bugs (and some amazing plants).

MiyakoBunny This is awesome 😍😍😍😍 6y

Stewart's Wicked Bugs: Young Reader‘s Edition is a condensed version of Wicked Bugs: The Louse that Conquered Napoleon's Army and Other Diabolical Insects geared towards middle-aged readers. Replete with photos and beautiful pencil sketches, this book is divided into six sections, each ending in a specialised essay.

📚📚📚📚 Recommended. Packed full of neat facts and information, this book is sure to please any bug-lovers in the family

Apologies for the non-book related post. The worst part about this miserable heat is all the six legged f**kers who also want to come inside to more pleasant climates (and trust me, they're significantly less cute than ladybugs).

It's not because my house is dirty, I swear. They're all over both my jobs, too. 🤢
