When someone asks what movie is as good as the book (novella), I will say this one. I saw the movie when it came out years ago but never read the story until now. To me, the story was the script, and how heart-wrenchingly poignant of a story it is ... a story of love from soul to soul and having to live with denial and loneliness because the world won't accept it. As Ennis states, “If you can't fix it, you've got to stand it.“ My heart just weeps.

DieAReader 🥳❤️‍🔥Awesome! 3w
sarahbarnes The film just broke my heart, and I‘ve never read the story either. I clearly need to. 3w

It took a long time for me to pick this story up. Not much to add to the numerous positive reviews. It is a masterpiece.

The movie definitely embellishes the parts between them out on the mountain and when Jack dies. It was really good, though. I see why people were interested in turning it into a movie. Just like the movie, this is literary art. It‘s sparse and clipped, much like Ennis and Jack themselves. It actually feels a bit like the movie, a lot happens, but not a lot is said (dialogue wise), but the message is clear. Highly recommend.

I love this movie. I‘ve wanted to read the short story that inspired the movie for a long time. When this audiobook came up for sale, I knew I had to have it. This is the next 32 minutes of my life!!!

Annie Proulx introduces us to Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, and manages to let us enter into their intimate, but somewhat secretive, love affair.
Through the pages, through the years, we witness their evolution: they get married, have children. But they keep making time to escape and live their intimate relationship: one or two weeks a year.
Beautifully written with an astute description of the characters, and their feelings.

So in case anyone is wondering, it takes less than an hour to break my heart 🥺🥺🥺💔💔💔💔
I'm not really sure why I chose to listen to this on a grey evening when I'm so tired that the slightest of winds could probably provoke tears but there you have it.
It's amazing the depth of feeling and character Proulx conveys in such a short story. And I feel that many are all too familiar with the feeling of having let time slip by.

My last entry for a challenge is reading a western. Since I really dislike westerns typically, I‘m not going for a “real” western. I had read this years before the movies and loved it, Annie Proulx, you understand. So here I go. #13inThree

Weaponxgirl I went for daughter of fortune since I'm not really a western reader either and bookriot had it as an option, I like your choice too! 6y
CindyE09 @bookriot ‘s challenge? I am still lacking a western as well, and it‘s not a category I usually read. I was thinking Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, but I haven‘t thought about this :) 6y
TheKidUpstairs @CindyE09 for good "I don't read Westerns" Westerns, is recommend either The Sisters Brothers or The Englishman's Boy. I'm not a Western reader, but I loved both and they both qualify! 6y

CindyE09 @TheKidUpstairs I will check those out, thanks! I am struggling with that topic a bit 6y
Samplergal This is so good. The film is better imho because of the videography and music. 6y
KathyWheeler I don‘t generally read westerns either but I‘ll second The Sisters Brothers as being really good, and I‘ll add True Grit — which is surprisingly funny. 6y

There is something spartan about this novella that succinctly conveys the repression, self-loathing, and heartbreak that drove Ennis to lead an unfulfilled life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@Soubhiville posted about this book yesterday. Part of me hates her for it, but most of me is grateful because it gave me the push I needed to finally get around to this one. #MountTBR #MtEverest

Image is not book cover, but a poster for a book club activity.

Soubhiville Sorry! But it‘s a beautifully sad story, isn‘t it? I wish the social changes happening now could have started long long ago, so people like these could have had normal happy lives. 6y
Soubhiville Also, did the end make you feel like the parents would have been accepting if they had moved to a cabin at the ranch? I felt like mom would have, and dad would have grudgingly ignored the issue. That makes it even sadder. 6y
WanderingBookaneer @Soubhiville : Don‘t be sorry. I‘m genuinely grateful. It is a beautiful tale. I agree with your prediction, but I fear the outcome would have been the same for their son. 6y

I‘m not crying in my car- that‘s totally just allergies...

I only recently found out this was a short story before it was a movie. It‘s very short- about an hour on audio.

If you loved the movie, you‘ll love reading this too. I did.

Wow, that was raw, and amazingly heartbreaking, such depth of feeling, from love and loss, packed into so few pages.

Thanks for giving me the heads up about this one @Gezemice , I never realized the movie was based on a short story until you mentioned it.

Gezemice I knew you‘d love this, I am so glad you did! It is such a short book but it packs a punch. 6y

Haunting, aching, raw, sparsely written, beautiful story about a forbidden love. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Soubhiville Why didn‘t I know this was a book first? 6y
Gezemice @Soubhiville It is actually a short story but you can get it separately because of the movie. I got the audio from Overdrive - they did not have the book in the library. 6y

3. Brokeback Mountain, Circe, Noir, Ready Player One. Hmm. I am on a library ban... so I can actually read my own books. That is not working so well so far....
4. I don‘t recall but I remember being to the library at a young age. Although my parents had a lot of books at home. I grew up on the classics!

I have not seen the movie and have never read anything by this author before. I keep hearing about Barkskins, so I wanted to get a sense of her writing. Holy moly, it was a slow love. The language was hard at 1st, but dammit it touched me. Chocked up twice. Love makes time pass too fast 💗😥😳.

Seeing Annie Proulx on Thursday so I finally read this short story and I'm so glad I did. I have no idea how she covers so much depth of emotion in so few pages. I was bawling my eyes out by the end. Ennis and Jack are unforgettable.
