So in case anyone is wondering, it takes less than an hour to break my heart 🥺🥺🥺💔💔💔💔
I'm not really sure why I chose to listen to this on a grey evening when I'm so tired that the slightest of winds could probably provoke tears but there you have it.
It's amazing the depth of feeling and character Proulx conveys in such a short story. And I feel that many are all too familiar with the feeling of having let time slip by.

My last entry for a challenge is reading a western. Since I really dislike westerns typically, I‘m not going for a “real” western. I had read this years before the movies and loved it, Annie Proulx, you understand. So here I go. #13inThree

Weaponxgirl I went for daughter of fortune since I'm not really a western reader either and bookriot had it as an option, I like your choice too! 1y
CindyE09 @bookriot ‘s challenge? I am still lacking a western as well, and it‘s not a category I usually read. I was thinking Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, but I haven‘t thought about this :) 1y
TheKidUpstairs @CindyE09 for good "I don't read Westerns" Westerns, is recommend either The Sisters Brothers or The Englishman's Boy. I'm not a Western reader, but I loved both and they both qualify! 1y

CindyE09 @TheKidUpstairs I will check those out, thanks! I am struggling with that topic a bit 1y
Samplergal This is so good. The film is better imho because of the videography and music. 1y
KathyWheeler I don‘t generally read westerns either but I‘ll second The Sisters Brothers as being really good, and I‘ll add True Grit — which is surprisingly funny. 1y

There is something spartan about this novella that succinctly conveys the repression, self-loathing, and heartbreak that drove Ennis to lead an unfulfilled life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@Soubhiville posted about this book yesterday. Part of me hates her for it, but most of me is grateful because it gave me the push I needed to finally get around to this one. #MountTBR #MtEverest

Image is not book cover, but a poster for a book club activity.

Soubhiville Sorry! But it‘s a beautifully sad story, isn‘t it? I wish the social changes happening now could have started long long ago, so people like these could have had normal happy lives. 2y
Soubhiville Also, did the end make you feel like the parents would have been accepting if they had moved to a cabin at the ranch? I felt like mom would have, and dad would have grudgingly ignored the issue. That makes it even sadder. 2y
WanderingBookaneer @Soubhiville : Don‘t be sorry. I‘m genuinely grateful. It is a beautiful tale. I agree with your prediction, but I fear the outcome would have been the same for their son. 2y

I‘m not crying in my car- that‘s totally just allergies...

I only recently found out this was a short story before it was a movie. It‘s very short- about an hour on audio.

If you loved the movie, you‘ll love reading this too. I did.

mauveandrosysky Soooo good and so powerful. 2y

Wow, that was raw, and amazingly heartbreaking, such depth of feeling, from love and loss, packed into so few pages.

Thanks for giving me the heads up about this one @Gezemice , I never realized the movie was based on a short story until you mentioned it.

Gezemice I knew you‘d love this, I am so glad you did! It is such a short book but it packs a punch. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Indeed it does, in the best possible way! 2y
InLibrisVeritas This was such a good one! I had to read it in college and loved it. 2y

Haunting, aching, raw, sparsely written, beautiful story about a forbidden love. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Soubhiville Why didn‘t I know this was a book first? 2y
Gezemice @Soubhiville It is actually a short story but you can get it separately because of the movie. I got the audio from Overdrive - they did not have the book in the library. 2y
Gezemice This also works for #lovestory #maylovesclassics 2y

Gezemice @Soubhiville Great in-between longer books read. Only 55 pages, 1 hour on audio. Enjoy! 2y
CSeydel @Soubhiville I found it in the collection Close Range. If that helps. 2y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa You know, I loved this movie but never read the story... it‘s time I corrected that oversight. 2y
rwmg The story itself and how it was made into a film are in 2y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It is a short and great one, excellent for reading slump! 2y

1. Once or twice a week, or whenever my holds come in.
2. Prague
3. Brokeback Mountain, Circe, Noir, Ready Player One. Hmm. I am on a library ban... so I can actually read my own books. That is not working so well so far....
4. I don‘t recall but I remember being to the library at a young age. Although my parents had a lot of books at home. I grew up on the classics!

#Trivialthursday @GarthRanzz

GarthRanzz I‘m the same. I don‘t remember visiting the library a lot as a kid but my mom had so many books that I always had something to read. 2y

I have not seen the movie and have never read anything by this author before. I keep hearing about Barkskins, so I wanted to get a sense of her writing. Holy moly, it was a slow love. The language was hard at 1st, but dammit it touched me. Chocked up twice. Love makes time pass too fast 💗😥😳.

Hoopiefoot The Shipping News is one of my favorite books. Also worth a read! 3y
Notafraidofwords @Hoopiefoot is it set in the country, too? 3y

Seeing Annie Proulx on Thursday so I finally read this short story and I'm so glad I did. I have no idea how she covers so much depth of emotion in so few pages. I was bawling my eyes out by the end. Ennis and Jack are unforgettable.

brendanmleonard oh i love this one so ❤️ the shirts...brb crying forever 😭😭😭😭 3y
mauveandrosysky @brendanmleonard seriously. And I've seen the movie a bunch of times and that STILL didn't dull the impact the book had on me. 3y
brendanmleonard Yes, this is one of two stories I go to when I need to feel things. 😄 3y

brendanmleonard @squarepeginroundhole that would be m. rickert's the chambered fruit 3y
squarepeginroundhole @brendanmleonard thx. Will look it up. 3y
squarepeginroundhole Btw, have you read why she regrets having it made into a film? Kinda interesting http://time.com/3648650/brokeback-mountain-annie-proulx/ 3y
