I am always a sucker for a coming-of-age story; this one is also a murder mystery and a YA romance. And it‘s a story about intolerance and division and the specter of war, and reading it in 2024 definitely makes it feel urgent in a way that I‘m not sure it would have at a different time in my life.

4/5⭐ I enjoyed this book just as much as the first time I read it. The author beautifully balances and weaves together worldbuilding, politics, family, music, philosophy, romance, and identity, all with complexity and meaning. I love Orma so much. #doublespin

Now this is good! Dragons can change into human form to interact in an uneasy political and social alliance to prevent war in this excellent YA fantasy.Seraphina is half human, half dragon; keeping as much a low profile as possible in her work as assistant choirmaster. Everything goes to hell of course:kept me engrossed on how Seraphina navigates it all. First of a series - will go on to the next!

Oh, I just loved this YA fantasy. It‘s an interesting take on dragons: many are living within human society while in their human form, but of course there‘s anti-dragon prejudice and an uneasy peace between the two races. The main character is relatable and likable, and I really enjoyed the palace intrigue and the emphasis on music. Looking forward to picking up the second book. This was my September #BookSpin.

Yay for #BookSpin day! My BookSpin is tagged, and even though I buried it at the bottom of the list because I want to prioritize books from my own shelves… my #DoubleSpin ended up landing on the one slot I allotted to a library hold. 😆 I‘m excited about the #BookSpinBingo possibilities, and maybe I‘ll even catch up on some past months‘ spins. (Ah, the optimism at the beginning of the month…😂)

This richly-realized and emotionally-resonant fantasy is full of dragons and court politics and is all about the importance of truth, love, and art in the forging of peace. Mandy Williams‘ narration of the audiobook is just pitch-perfect and I listened on 1x speed, just delighted the whole time. Highly recommended for fans of The Goblin Emperor or Uprooted!

I was not expecting to like this. I needed a dragon read for a challenge and chose this. I am glad I did. I found myself completely involved in the story, so much so, that my dreams were influenced by the story.

Only then did I notice the dragon waiting for me on the cathedral steps, flashing me his best facsimile of a proper human smile. No one in the world could have found Orma‘s strained expression heartwarming but me.

humouress “Forty years,” interrupted Eskar. “We‘ve had forty years of peace. You weren‘t even born when Comonot‘s Treaty was signed. Your own mother—”
“Rest she on Heaven‘s hearthstone,” I mumbled, as if it were my job to make up for the social inadequacies of dragons everywhere. The prince flashed me a grateful glance.
“—was but a speck in the queen‘s womb,” continued Eskar placidly, as if I hadn‘t spoken.
3y
humouress He taught me not just music but everything he thought I should know about dragonkind: history, philosophy, physiology, higher mathematics (as close as they came to a religion). He answered even my most impudent questions. Yes, dragons could smell colors under the right conditions. Yes, it was a terrible idea to transform into a saarantras right after eating an aurochs. 3y

humouress It was Sir Cuthberte who‘d taken me for a strumpet. He bowed, saying, “My apologies, Maid Dombegh. I should not have been so boorish.”
Sir Karal attempted to preempt my next question: “We‘ll never tell you where our brothers are hiding!”
“You‘d have to seduce us first!” Sir Cuthberte twirled his mustache.
3y
humouress “It‘s such a relief after all these years to learn that you recovered from your fright,” he said in a low voice, giving my hand a squeeze, “and that you grew up so pretty!”
“Were you worried?” I asked, touched.
“Yes. What were you, eleven? Twelve? At that age we‘re all gawky, and the outcome is always in doubt.” He winked,
3y
humouress Love the bits where dragons (in saarantras form) try to comprehend human emotions: “I‘m sorry about your mother. I believe I am.” He gestured toward his stomach. “There, yes? That‘s where one feels it?” 3y

16 year old Seraphina, whose mother died when she was born, is now assistant to the
Court composer, who is in charge of musical entertainment for the upcoming celebration of the 40th anniversary of the truce between humans and dragons. The story opens with Prince Rufus‘s funeral. Since his head was missing, a dragon must have killed him. Mustn‘t it?

humouress It‘s been 2 weeks since she moved to Castle Orison (the palace) and she also teaches 15yo Princess Glisselda music. Seraphina has inherited secrets from her mother among which is a dream garden full of grotesques. And then she starts meeting them in real life. (edited) 3y

This the kind of book I put down, coming back to after finishing the other five books I happened to be reading simultaneously.
But hooray! Unlike my un-updated profile is telling you, the only things I‘m actually currently reading are this and a non-fiction I‘ll probably post about once I get around to it. After this, I‘ll continue the other books I set aside during November‘s frenzy (Genesis, Lark Rising, etc)

Fantasy_bookworm Just realized I was running out of characters and hadn‘t even talked about the book! I only read a few pages before setting this aside, so right now i‘m done with chapter one and reading chapter two. I love the world building and the interesting portrayal of dragons. Our protagonist is pretty cool, too. I wonder if the new skin we meet has something to do with the main plot... is there even going to be ONE plot? So many questions! 3y

Orma moved a pile of books off a stool for me but seated himself directly on another stack. This habit of his never ceased to amuse me. Dragons no longer hoarded gold; Comonot‘s reforms had outlawed it. For Orma and his generation, knowledge was treasure. As dragons through the ages had done, he gathered it, and then he sat on it.

I really liked both this book and its companion, Shadow Scale. The books fall under the realm of the fantasy genre and detail Seraphina's life as a half-human, half-dragon living among dragons and humans alike. She is tasked with trying to prevent, under overwhelming odds, the dragons and humans from going to war with each other. It was a lovely and very quick read. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I‘m 2 hours in and I have made it 100 pages into Seraphina and so far I am loving it! I am enjoying the slow pace of storytelling, and how Seraphina is slowly learning things about who and what she is. The garden she has created in her head to control her visions is so far the most interesting.

I have to stop for a little while to help my friend but I will be sure to get back to my reading at some point today.
