A gripping novel about two sisters who are left homeless by their mother's death and the lengths the fierce older sister will go to protect her beloved young charge The hardscrabble Chase women--Mary, Hannah, and their mother Diane--have been eking out a living running a tiny seaside motel that has been in the family for generations, inviting trouble into their lives for just as long. Eighteen-year-old Mary Chase is a force of nature: passionate, beautiful, and free-spirited. Her much younger sister, Hannah, whom Mary affectionately calls "Bunny," is imaginative, her head full of the stories of princesses and adventures that Mary tells to give her a safe emotional place in the middle of their troubled world. But when Diane dies in a car accident, Mary discovers the motel is worth less than the back taxes they owe. With few options, Mary's finely tuned instincts for survival kick in. As the sisters begin a cross-country journey in search of a better life, she will stop at nothing to protect Hannah. But Mary wants to protect herself, too, for the secrets she promised she would never tell--but now may be forced to reveal--hold the weight of unbearable loss. Vivid and suspenseful, The Sisters Chase is a whirlwind page-turner about the extreme lengths one family will go to find--and hold onto--love.

This book was fantastic. I love books with a complicated, flawed protagonist who doesn‘t always make the best choices, but at the same time, you can completely understand why they made those choices.

I really liked this one. This is an older #BOTM pick. Sisters Mary & Hannah find themselves alone in the world after their mother dies in a car accident. With no one to depend on but each other, the sisters set out across the country in search of a new beginning. As the girls journey through life together secrets threaten to tear them apart. Mary is determined to protect Hannah from the evils of the world no matter the cost to herself. ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

I had to ponder this one to fully form my opinion. Easy to read and just enough tension to make me want to keep reading, but something just didn't sit right with me. I really disliked Mary and just felt terrible for Hannah. Now that it's been a couple days, I think this book is utterly forgettable.

My cats wearing clothes are much more interesting. 💕 #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #adventuresofthegmen #catsinclothes

I felt almost as bonded to Mary & Hannah (aka Mare & Bunny) as they were to one another. I worried about their safety as they road-tripped across America after their mother‘s sudden death, with Mary constantly pushing the limits to ensure that her kid sister was provided for. Mary‘s protective & maternal instinct, paired with her absolute refusal to deny her baser, animal nature, made for a fascinating & dimensional character study.

*cont‘d👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: There‘s a dark, wild thread prowling through this novel & it hunted me down & ripped out my heart. I have no doubt that Sarah Healey keeps the hearts of her readers in a jeweled box, sitting innocently atop her writer‘s desk. 6y

“Mary extended her arm out to her sister who knew nothing so well as the curve of Mary‘s side. And after a reluctant moment, Hannah folded into it, resting her head on Mary‘s shoulder.”

The intimacy between these two (& knowing that something happens to separate them) is killing me. 😭

As far as #BOTM picks, this one was pretty mediocre. Not bad, also not a favorite. It instantly sprang to mind though when I saw today‘s #maymoviemagic prompt, #behindthewheel.

Mary and Hannah are two sisters set adrift, driving across the country to try to find a place to put down roots after their mother does in a car crash.

Cinfhen This is one I did not read. There were a lot of mediocre titles that year you took the #BOTMchallenge🙄 6y
RohitSawant Nice pick! 6y
Reviewsbylola They‘ve gotten even more mediocre imo. 😆 @Cinfhen 6y

Reviewsbylola I‘ve nicknamed myself Bitter Betty in regard to my newfound dislike of BOTM. 😆 @gradcat 6y
Megabooks I agree about it being mediocre, but I barely remember it. @Cinfhen There were generally 1-2/5 so-sos or pans for me a month, but I‘m still so glad I did it! 6y
Reviewsbylola Me too! @Megabooks I think we picked a great year to do it. I wouldn‘t be nearly as enthusiastic now. 6y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola That‘s a definite negatory! It‘s better than last year but not as good as 16-17!! 6y

The Sisters Chase is a beautiful story with a surprisingly fitting emotional ending. It‘s dark & filled with lies and secrets, but also hope with unconditional love and unbreakable family bonds. I highly recommend this compelling book.

I finally added this one to my BOTM box because they categorized it as a thriller. It's really picking up around 70 pages in, but I've had my guess about the ending since about chapter 2. I'm pretty much to the point where I can't put it down so I guess we'll see... 📖

Update: I was right. But I'm still glad I read this one!

The first third of this book I liked. But the last 2/3rds I loved! I didn‘t want to put it down and was so invested in the story. I did know where the story was headed once I figured out the timeline, but it didn‘t take away from the story. (I‘m slowly catching up on my #botm picks!)

Help! Is my math off? I thought Marry was 18, wouldn‘t that mean Mary was not 13 when she met Stefan. Do I have the ages off or is that right? 😬

Cityofamber I think I‘m a year off my current age and she‘s 19 now, so 14 when they met? 8y
Cityofamber Also time frame-wise I‘m thinking she‘s Hannah‘s mom!? Maybe I‘m overthinking this timeline thing though... 😂 8y

I‘d love to read “The Sisters Chase.” I‘d heard nothing about it until @erinreads#50kgiveaway post & now I think I might be drooling a bit! It‘s got so many details that appeal to me: relationships between women, sisterhood, motherhood, & an ocean-side location! (I think there‘s seawater instead of blood coursing through my veins). My bunny, Moxie, wants me to mention that the best detail is that one of the characters is nicknamed “Bunny.”😉🐰

monalyisha @erinreads It reminds me a little bit of “The Salt God‘s Daughter,” which I read years ago & liked a whole bunch! Congrats on reaching such high #‘s! 🎉📈🙌🏻 (edited) 8y
erinreads I only learned about it through Book of the Month, but I was so happy with my choice that month! It‘s got a great complicated family dynamic! Good luck! 💕 And I‘ve never heard of The Salt God‘s Daughter, but I‘m adding it to my TBR now! 👍🏻 8y

I liked this one well enough. It‘s one of those books that is not heavy on plot, but heavy on untrustworthy and dislikable characters. Mainly the main character, Mary. She irritated the shit out of me. That tends to happen in books where the main character is SO GORGEOUS ALL MEN DIE. I enjoyed it, though, because it was light and easy.

I‘m trying to catch up on my BOTM picks and I just finished my June selection. This book was very good. It was a little slow going at first but it definitely picked up. This was a great book about the love of two sisters. There were some serious plot twists that I didn‘t see coming and there were points where I shed a few tears. Great read!
